The California Gold Rush almost did not happen. In his 1848 report to the adjutant–general at
Washington, DC, Col. Richard Barnes Mason wrote a worker was checking the strong flow of water
in a stream near a saw mill he was building. James Marshall noticed a few glittering particles in the
mud that had accumulated. He collected and examined a few of them and, satisfied with their value,
brought them to Captain John Sutter, owner of the land where the saw mill was to be built. They
agreed to keep their discovery secret for a while but word soon spread and quickly hundreds and
then thousands of miners flooded to the mines seeking instant wealth. Only three months after the
discovery, it was estimated about four thousand workers were employed mining gold in the region
(personal communication, August 17, 1848).
Getting to and surviving in the California gold mines was very expensive. Miners generally traveled
alone. Many spent about six months wages or more getting to California and then found they could
not afford to buy even basic supplies and commodities (Knysh, 2012). For example, a dozen eggs
cost $50 and one apple cost $5 (Smithsonian American Art Museum, n.d., Arrival of the forty–niners
section).Gold miners endured heavy snow and rain. They usually lived in tents. Damp outdoor
camping and poor sanitation caused scurvy, frostbite and other illnesses. A poor diet of beans, bacon

The Contamination Of The Gold Mining Company
Within the last couple of month there has been a mere excessive amount of water being polluted and
having toxic waste carelessly dumped. The Animas River of Colorado and flowing through Utah,
New Mexico, and high Northern Part of Arizona. But it's not just the that, there are plenty of lakes
and rivers that are being contaminated with toxic waste all the time. And people seem to be very
closed and okay with the fact their water sources are dirty.
Well as a Native American, some of these parts the river flows are pretty much sacred lands, and as
well as the water very vital. But due to the government and the EPA granting permission for the gold
mining company to dump their whatever waste into the river, now jeopardizing millions of people
and creatures that rely on the water source for survival. But after knowing they gave permission to
do this, the EPA had the nerves to go right around, apologize, but telling residents that live alongside
the flowing river to say the contamination was an "accident". So as for this "accidental" spill, now
people and domesticated animals can't use this source for anything. As for cleaning up, it may take a
couple years until anything good can actually come out of it. The thousands of gallon waste that
were dumped into the water leaves a very thick orange–yellow color covering the whole. And since

Australia. These mines vary in sizes, substance being mined and in many more ways. One of the

"In the Philippines, there are 2.1 million child labourers aged 5–17 years old" ("Child Labour in the
Philippines"). In the Philippines they used to not have laws against children working in dangerous
conditions. But, in recent decades the Philippine government has passed laws that make it illegal for
children to work in these dangerous conditions. But the laws have not been enforced as much as
they should be so children are still working in these very dangerous conditions and skipping school
to help their family. Many factors contribute to child slavery and other various problems in the
Philippines. These factors do not have to be necessarily all human. Some in fact, are because of

The California Gold Rush was an event that lasted from January 24th, 1848 to 1855. The event was
driven mainly by the large quantities of gold reserves that were discovered in the soon to be US state
of California. This event caused many Americans to move from the eastern states and middle states
to California with the hopes of finding gold. In this paper, I will analyze the economy at the time the
gold rush started and attempt to answer the question of why individuals found it necessary or
advantageous to move out to California in pursuit of gold. I will also consider personal accounts and
editorials written to gain a more personal narrative of the conditions people were experiencing as
well as their mindsets in deciding whether to move to California for the gold or not. First, I would
like to consider the economic theory behind the gold rush and explain why on the surface; it is quite
simple. Consider a modern theoretical case. Say a family of four is living in Cincinnati, Ohio and
the main earner of the family works for a tool manufacturing company in Cincinnati. Suppose that
the company decides during their yearly employee reviews that they aren't going to give this certain
individual a pay raise for the next year; also suppose that the employee does not see themselves

To achieve rapid economic development, many countries resort to various activities to exploit
natural resources. One of such activities is mining which is an important economic activity with the
potential of contributing to the socio–economic development of an area.
Although in South Africa, it is on a downward trend from its peak some decades ago (from 21%
contribution to GDP in 1970 to just 6% in 2011), the mining

The Mining of Metals Industry
Metals have been an important industry for mankind since the Bronze Age, gold and silver are other
important metals that were used for currency and ornamental jewelry. The Industrial Revolution
helped to usher in modern civilization by transforming iron into railway transportation and high rise
buildings in all of the major cities around the world. Concerns for the environment did not exist as
long as the metals could be extracted to fulfill the needs of the masses. Environmental concerns
about mining didn't even come about in the United States until the Resources Conservation and
Recovery Act (RCRA) in 1976 (EPA 1976). RCRA was the first Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) regulation that required a study of mining wastes from active surface and underground
mining activities. In 1985 the EPA published the Land Disposal Restrictions Phase IV which
establishes the metal–bearing waste treatment standards (EPA 1985). This includes Toxicity
Characteristic waste that is generated from mining processes with high concentration levels. The
EPA also printed the "Abandoned Mine Site Characterization and Cleanup Handbook" in 2000 to
cover all mining processes and remediation programs (Ceto and Mahmud 2000). The following
pages of this paper will concentrate on the mining practices, present contamination and remediation

South Carolina's commercial gold mining began in 1829, two years after the first discovery of gold
in the area [1]. Mining continued with variations in productivity until World War II, when all gold
mining was abandoned until renewed interest during the 1980s [1]. Figure 1., seen above, shows the
amount of gold produced per year in troy ounces per year and the percentage of total US gold
production [2]. Overall, gold production increases with time as newer mining techniques increase

certain populations [18], [19]. It is possible that the same connection existed in South Carolina. The

and day out to remove flecks of gold from Amazonian soil using cyanide, mercury, lead and arsenic

It should be enough to spur the government into action, to enforce more laws and regulations and
send more military forces out to take out the operations, but it's not. Peru's economy has gone
through many changes but it is largely based on the original Incan economical system which ran
based on geographical location and what the areas had to offer. Commercial mining is the second
largest contributor the economy today, it accounts for roughly sixty percent of the country's exports
and with more than eighty companies and two hundred commercial mines it's not surprising.

Gold Mining And The Amazon Jungle
Part A
This article talks about the devastating problem Peru is having with its illegal Gold mining and the
Amazon Jungle. It begins with talking about how the author has noticed the huge change in the city
called Tambopata in the southern province called Madre de Dios (translated to Mother of God). Mr
Boyd described how he realized how much the 13 year gap in his travels to Tombopata before even
landing in the airport. The once green horizon was said to have spots of a "puss colored toxic holes".
He goes on to talk about the efforts the government has put into place to try and control the illegal
mining. The author talks about the protest from the almost twenty thousand minors that stopped
Tambopata in its tracks. Lastly Mr. Boyd speaks on who's fault is it, if it's the illegal minors trying to
feed their families of the lucrative world demand for this gold that makes this illegal activity
possible.
Peru being a decedent of two Peruvian parents, I know how far Peru has come in the past couple of
years. In the past thirsty years or so it has come out of terrorism, corruption, dictatorship, and
immense poverty outside of the major cities of Peru. Once Peru finally stabilized it started to take
advantage of its natural resources, and the rise of gold prices. The population took notice of the
money to be made with gold mining and it was only a matter of time before the illegal mining
business formed.

Preamble
The Kalgoorlie Mine, also known as the Super Pit due to its distinctive depth of 600m ( Figure 1.),
is a mine situated in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia that primarily extracts gold. Often considered to
be the largest open–cut mine in the nation, Kalgoorlie produces a tremendous 22 000 kilograms of
gold each year. The gold rush that struck Australia during 1851–1914 was primarily a result of the
discovery of many mining sites like the Kalgoorlie gold mine. The finding of the Kalgoorlie mine
by Paddy Hannan, Thoman Flanagan and Daniel Sheal attracted several thousands of other
prospectors (mineral explorers) and created a " rush" to whoever would quickly become prosperous
from mining gold at Kalgoorlie. As such,

During the California Gold Rush and transition to statehood, California endured many economic,
sociological, political, and environmental changes. California changed economically in many ways.
An example of an important economic change is the inflation at the time of the gold rush. People
would sell things at super high prices because miners needed tools and if they were the only one in
town, they could. Another example of an important economic change is in taxes. California was
planning on collecting money to build public schools. Guess where all the money was coming from,
the taxes. The problem was, the people living in California didn't have any money. This is
significant because if the californians didn't have any money, they couldn't build the public schools.
My last example is that if you owned land, you had to prove it. New people didn't know if the land
was yours so if someone was building something on your land, you had to prove that the land was
yours or you can't make them move. This is significant because even if you owned land from the
time of mexican rule, you had to show how you got the land or when you got it or you couldn't
prove it was yours. This is how statehood and the gold rush had a HUGE impact on California.
California changed sociologically in many ways. An example of an important sociological change is
the population. At first, California wasn't a state. It had a small population and then, gold was found.

Purpose: This report is based on gold mining in Australia particularly Mt Morgan. The purpose is to
decide if a gold mine is should be built near Mt Morgan (QLD) by considering the scientific impact

Pollution is one of the key environmental impacts. Mercury is still used in gold mining in our
developing world despite safer alternatives. According to the United Nations Industrial Organization
it is estimated that 1000 tonnes of mercury is released into the air, soil and water each year. Mercury
is highly toxic therefore it can cause serious illness even death to both humans and animals. Cyanide
is extremely lethal but as it is an environmental contaminant it is not as problematic as mercury due

1. Introduction
Since1970, Muirshiel Country Park has been part of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park which is
situated in the River Calder Valley north of Lochwinnoch. The park is an area of general natural
beauty with beautiful landscapes and great scenic views but people are allowed to live and work
within the area. It may look remote but it has a purpose for human activity, as in the past the land
has been used as a farm situated close to the current entrance, for field sports such as grouse
shooting and more recently for barytes mining. The mine closed in 1969, just before the opening of
the country park. (Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority [CMPA from now on], n.d.) The current use of
the park is mainly recreational, with a small network of footpaths for walkers, cyclists, and
educational groups. Other land uses include forestry, field sports, and small–scale agriculture. For
this assignment we are imagining that a gold–bearing ore outcrops on Windy Hill just to the north of
the country park.
The vein extends below the hill summit to an unknown depth and can be traced horizontally across
the landscape for at least a kilometre on either side of Windy Hill. The scope of this assignment is to
identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of building a gold mining site in this area and how
this might affect the local geology, landscape, ecology, hydrology, and overall biodiversity.
2. Methodology

treacherous. Indigenous Tribes originally inhabited Suriname, and by the late 1650's the Governor of
Barbados, Lord Willoughby settled a colony called "Willoughbyland." Lord Willoughby began
construction on multiple plantations and in slaved thousands of Africans and indigenous people. The
colony was invaded in 1667 by the Dutch who established the official name of the colony as
'Suriname.' In 1863 as slavery was being abolished, small–scale gold mining commenced. As
Suriname gained independence in 1975 with prospects of gold triggering the second gold rush. The
beginning of small–scale indigenous miners and foreign large–scale mining corruption influenced
global environmental inequality in Suriname. In 2000, Ouboter et al. (2012) stated in his case study
that the Geological and Mining Survey of Suriname (GMD) estimated that the number of small–
scale gold miners in Suriname was between 25,000 and 35,000. (873) Gold mining in Suriname is
the most significant source of employment and main export of product in the country, because of
this, the indigenous people mine to provide for their families. These small–scale indigenous miners
use mercury to extract gold because it is the cheapest and easiest way to turn the product into profit.
