Placer Vs Quartz Mining Research Paper
Placer and Quartz Mining
Placer and quartz mining although very different can be similar.
Obviously the main objective is to find gold. Another way they are similar they are destructive for
hard rock mining they would blow up mountains for placer mining they would put mercury in the
water to help find gold destroying many useful resources. The differences between these two types
of mining are although placer mining can involve a few people hard rock mining mostly involves a
large group of people and is run by large companies. Next, is refinement since the gold usually had
lots of dirt covering the miners would remove as much by shaking it. They would probably send it
through a strainer a couple times. with placer mining they would smash the ore and extract the gold
they then wash it twice and filter it. Then they crush ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then we have the rocker it is placed on a rocking legs and you feed it by hand then rock it shaking
out all the dirt and leaving the gold. Finally there is the sluice box you would feed it with a sluice
run water through it and rock it it had the same principal as the rocker but larger and fed by a
sluice. Now with hard rockmining if miners found a large concentration of gold the miners would dig
tunnels which was very hard and take the chunks that had gold. The way mining affected the
economy in Montana was huge. Hard rock mining made tons of money mining companies were
thriving until the flow of gold inflated the money leaving the mining corporations unable to make a
profit. Placer mining did not have the biggest effect on the economy but still prevalent it make much
money because it gold was very few and far between. There were quite a few mining towns in
montana but none of them were as great as these. Helena the capital of montana was a top place tier
for mining as well as Butte and Virginia

Gold Mining in Australia
When did gold mining begin in Australia? Gold has been rumoured that it was found in Australian
as early as 1814, however, the first gold fields did not appear until thirty years later. Gold was found
in Australia many decades before the Goldrush. The first discovery of gold was actually in New
South Wales, in May 1851 by Edward Hargreaves. In fact, this was a tentative start to the Goldrush.
Gold was commonly found only in New South Wales and Victoria in the days. How was gold
mined? (Now and then) Well, long time ago it actually wasn't mined, it was panned. You had to
search and find the right river to find gold. Then you pick a spot along the river or stream with a
slow current and a spot that has large rocks or a fallen tree along the water's edge. Than you pick up
your pan (metal in the day). Then dirt and gravel in scooped into the pan and then submerged into
the water. The dirt and gravel will float, and because gold is heavier and denser it will say in the pan.
This process uses the density of gold and the force of gravity to separate gold particles from other
sedimentary deposits. Another common way in the day was sluicing. The water washes down fine
gravel containing gold so that it can be directed into sluice boxes and recovered using gravity
separation (where the heavy gold is trapped at the bottom and the lighter sands are washed away).
The world has advanced and developed numerously. More sophisticated techniques have been
developed for gold to be found

Small-Scale Mining in the Philippines: a Case Study
SMALL–SCALE MINING
(Lives at risk in the Philippine Gold Mines)
INTRODUCTION
Gold is the number one mineral produced by the Philippines in value terms. Although total local
production was low relative to world production, it ranked 2nd to Africa in gold production per unit
land area in 1988 and ranked 29th as top gold producer in 2002(Israel and Asirot 2002). In the year
2002–2007, the Philippines' gold production increased by 8.2%. This contributed an average of 2%
gross domestic product (GDP) in the same period. The country was ranked 18th in the GFMs Gold
Survey list of top 20 Gold Producing countries in 2007 (Teves 2008). The 2008 and 2009 data of the
Philippine mining Almanac showed a significant amount of gold production by the ... Show more

1995). High levels of mercury pollution were found on–site as well as in the affected places
downstream. Williams et al. specifically asserted that there were already considerable mercury loads
in some sectors of the Agusan River, where Diwalwal drains into, and that the water samples from
the mining site itself showed higher concentrations than those in the other gold rush areas in the
world.
Although studies on the impact of mercury pollution due to small–scale mining were already
numerous, they were generally technical in nature. Few works touched on the economic aspects of
the problem and did so only in a superficial and summary manner. So far, there is no available study
that conducted an economic analysis in a more detailed and quantitative way in the Philippines or
elsewhere.
Small–scale mining is not an important public revenue–generating sector for the government at
present because of its largely illegal nature. Viewed in a more positive light, the activity should
become a solid tax base when fully licensed, given the large number of people and economic
activities dependent on it.
LAWS AND INSTITUTIONS IN SMALL–SCALE MINING
Laws
The earliest mining law in the Philippines was Commonwealth Act 137 promulgated in 1936. This
legislation had no separate provision for small–scale mining since the activity was not practiced
extensively then. It took effect for many years until the martial law era when it was amended
through Presidential Decree

Westward Expansion and the American Dream

Westward Expansion and the American Dream
The experiences a nation undergoes often shape its national identity and define who they are as a
country. Throughout the course of its history, America has developed a national identity which is the
American Dream. The American Dream is defined as the qualities that make up America and most
of its people they include; opportunity, success, determination, and ingenuity. Many events in
American's history highlight the idea of the American dream between the period of its creation and
the 1900's, but few have succeeded to exhibit all the qualities that make up this idea. One specific
event in America's history has succeeded in demonstrating the four ... Show more content on

This event soon came to be known as the California Gold Rush. The 49ers of the California Gold
Rush can be known as major exercisers of the American Dream by highlighting success and
determination. The event itself best displays the quality of opportunity.
Many of the people were taking an enormous risk by selling their farms and houses and leaving in
search of something that they could never obtain. These people all had the common goal of seizing
the opportunity to become rich and lead a better life. According to Ronald James writer for the
Nevada Encyclopedia,
"For most, the idea of striking it rich by discovering a valuable claim yielded to the ambition of
earning a good wage and, if the opportunity presented itself, of raising a family in a wholesome
community. Many still dreamt of sudden wealth, and gambling with stocks became the most
common outlet for this hope."
James demonstrates how the 49ers seized the opportunity to strike it rich in hopes of leading a
healthy and opulent life. The 49ers mused on the small chance they had to strike it rich that served
as a major component that piloted their determination. This highlights the American Dream because
the 49ers of the California gold rush used determination to obtain the opportunity they had sought
out for. Those who came to the new land were willing to live off of almost nothing on a day to day
basis. Much of these people were

Pros And Cons Of Gold Mining
5. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
5.1 Conclusions
From this study, we realize that Ghana has had a long standing history of gold production, dating
back to the colonial era: The economy continues to be a dominant gold producer in Africa and the
world. Further, gold production has contributed significantly towards the development of the
economy of Ghana; providing the much needed foreign exchange earnings; as well as jobs and
incomes for the citizenry. The librazilization of gold production in 1989 following the Economic
Recovery Program (ERP) in 1983 allowed the operation of small scale gold mining. Small scale
gold production has led to increase in gold production and export, however, liberalization, gold
export and the existence of small scale gold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Given the negative influences of mining on the environment, some scholars have recommended
putting an end to mining. It is the recommendation of this study that the government, policy makers
and stakeholders take steps to minimize the adverse effect of gold mining, with reference to this
study; illegal small scale gold mining.
On the count of bottlenecks to obtaining licenses, the Small scale gold mining act stipulates that
small scale gold mining is reserved for Ghanaian citizens, and as such, obtaining licenses should be
made easier and accessible to prospective miners. The government can streamline the license
acquiring process by setting up offices in district capitals and empowering them to grant appropriate
mining licenses with minimal cost so as to allow the average Ghanaian to obtain a license to mine.
Lengthy time for issuing licenses could also be avoided with effective decentralization of the
process. Bribery and corruption in granting licenses should also be tackled by establishing a
complaint center and a toll–free helpline and cracking down on corrupt officials who exhort money

Impact Of Chinese Immigration
Chinese immigrants have made significant contributions in America after the country was
developing and recovering from the Civil War. They migrated to United States in the early 1800s
and filled in the hard and long laboring jobs. They were also the essential and most important group
of immigrants for constructing the railroads in the West. As the economy of United States become
more industrial and successful, the numbers of Chinese immigrants and workers also increased. A
number of them became entrepreneurs establishing factories and farms, creating many more jobs
and contributing a positive influence to the economy of America. Furthermore, their population have
grown more than any other immigrant groups during the late 1800s. As their population grow, so did
the power of anti–Chinese beliefs among the workers in the American industries. This has caused
the legislation to reduce the coming of Chinese working immigrants to the United States which also
infuriated the relationships between United States and China.
During the 1850s, many Chinese workers traveled and relocated in the United States due to the great
news of the Gold Rush. Most of them were inexperienced male workers that seek for a better life for
themselves and families back at home. At first, they mined for gold and worked in dangerous gold
mines, but had other harsh and similar opinions such as agricultural jobs and factory jobs. Due to
their hard working attitudes, they were willing to take low–wage jobs that

Gold is Money but Water is Life
The search for new mining locations around the world has been significant to many mining
corporations in the United States and Canada. Since the areas within these boundaries are being used
up or are extremely expensive, many have taken their operations to developing countries in Latin
America. El Salvador is one of the next countries that Pacific Rim, a Canadian–Australian firm that
produces gold and copper, is looking to open mines in. Specifically, a gold mine located near
Sensuntepeque, which is the capital of the Cabañas region and the town of San Isidro. El Salvador
has welcomed foreign mining companies onto their land in the past for exploration but for the last

Also scarred from an extremely traumatic twelve–year civil war, the country knows all too well of
the repercussions that stem from exploitation and corruption. Today, nearly 90 percent of the Rio
Lempa, the country's main water supply, is contaminated with arsenic and cyanide, leaving it
virtually undrinkable (Zucker 2010). The extreme leeching process that must take place to extract
the tiny particles of gold discovered in the El Dorado mine can and will be extremely detrimental to
the livelihood of the Salvadoran people and the country as a whole. El Salvador's lack of natural
resources, current issues of deforestation, and poverty are becoming significant factors in the bleak
future that the country must prepare for. While the Pacific Rim Corporation believes that mining
activity in El Salvador will create more jobs and economic growth, further exploration will and has
created an environment of hostility. The Salvadorian government must continue to further their
efforts to defend their current mining ban and refusal to grant extraction permits but also engage in
efforts of economic empowerment and an increase of land control.
After the civil war in the early 1990s, the Salvadorian government was confronted with an
outstanding issue of economic and social turmoil which required the government to request for
international aid. One of the many laws enacted to boost the economy was a 1996 modern mining
law to replace

The Argentina governments concern is based on the fact that the royalties they receive from the
mine are ¼ of the total GDP of their poor San Juan province; once the mining is finished this will
regress back to zero and devastate the economy. The local farmers are concerned with the
explosions that cause dust to settle on the glaciers and accelerate its melting; the effects are
devastating to the whole surrounding ecosystem. The resident's of the valley share the same concern
as the Argentinian government, that once the mining ceases their income will revert to zero. Finally,
the shareholders of Barrick Gold are concerned with the idea of huge opposition and lack of
productivity that ensued because of it. In dealing with the afore mentioned stakeholder groups,
Barrick Gold can use all the steps of the communication model, including: sender, encode, channel,
receiver, and feedback. First off, the Chilean government: Barrick Gold (sender) needs to think of a
method that allows cyanide to be removed from the river (encode), and this idea needs to be
presented face–to–face (channel) to the Chilean government (receiver); once the idea is received,
Barrick Gold needs to allow for feedback (positive or negative) from this stakeholder. Secondly, the
local farmers: Barrick Gold (sender) is responsible for devising a plan for decelerating the melting
of the glaciers (encode) and portraying this plan, either in a proposal or in a meeting (channel), to
the local farmers

Earth's surface, yet humans know very little about it and its contents. With over half of the species in
the ocean still undiscovered, the ocean remains a mystery, with much more to be learned about what
it possesses. The ocean is home to not only life, but to natural resources. Some of the resources
possessed within the ocean are minerals, such as salt, sand, gravel, and some manganese, copper,
nickel, iron, cobalt, gold, diamonds, and silver [1]. Valuable crude oil is drilled from the ocean floor,

Nautilus' system starts with the Seafloor Production Tools (SPTs) which are located at the bottom of
the sea floor approximately 1600 meters deep (about 1 mile). These SPTs are the "nozzles" of this
system as they agitate the seafloor, allowing the extraction of nearly everything that the SPTs
dislodge, creating this slurry filled with multiple precious and non–precious metals. The SPTs are
connected by large pipes to a Subsea Slurry Lift Pump (SSLP), which is basically a big pump that
sends the slurry up the Riser and Lifting System (RALS) and into the ship on the ocean surface. The
ship, known as the Production Support Vessel (PSV), is heart of the operation and where production
starts. The slurry mixture, comprised of copper, gold, silver, zinc, and sand is separated on the vessel
and all of the material in the slurry are used or sold. The precious metals are used or sold to buyers
throughout the world, and the sand and other non–precious minerals are used for concrete
production. This type of operation is nearly one hundred percent efficient as every part of the slurry
is used and sold [3]. Although this form of mining is profitable and nearly one hundred percent
effective, this process may greatly disturb the ocean floor. The environmental impacts of this mining
process can be minimized but are still relatively impactful. The ocean has already been damage by

Western Gold Mining Industry In North America
Out of Luck "In and out of this nest the human ants poured all day and night, for in wet–sinking the
labour must be kept without ceasing all through the twenty–four hours, Sundays included" (R.
Byron 115). Between 1858 and 1863, two major gold rushes occurred in Canada. Thousands of men
and women, of all ages, set off to seek laborious fortune in North America. It was evident that the
journey would be strenuous, yet the greed overpowered any consideration of failure. Due to this, the
western gold mining society was often portrayed as a society full of "grubby miners, instant wealth,
[and] raucous living" (Anonymous). It was the journey, living conditions, and greed that eventuated
in failures to most of the miners. For many, unfortunately, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Gold was the only thought lingering around in people's minds. The miners needed it, and they were
greedy enough to reach extreme heights to have it. Meanwhile, Sir James Douglas began rounding
up policemen to arrest domestic miners within the camps . The population of miners grew smaller
and smaller every day and dreams of finding gold were crushed by the minute. The few that were
left were "wild men who had easy access to liquor and a taste for yellow dust" (G. Bowering).
Unfortunately, with the mindsets and drunkenness of those miners, not much was achieved at that
time, and very few left with what they wanted. With the disastrous number of obstacles and
temptations that were faced throughout the journey, this result was inevitable. The amount of greed
brewing inside each one of the miners would eventually lead to an ill–fated turn of events, and
sadly, it didn't come into realization until all the harm was

General Mining Act Research Paper
The General Mining Act of 1872 encourages people and companies to prospect for minerals on
federally owned land. This encourages US citizens and businesses to stake a claim on the plot of
land and patent the claim for about $5 per acre. (Withgott) Until recently, there was no requirement
to restore the land after mining. Several mining techniques have been used over the years. From
strip mining, subsurface mining to open pit, placer, and mountaintop mining.
Strip mining is a process where layers of surface soil and rock are removed and exposed. The
overlaying soil called, overburden is set aside while the resource is extracted. Once completed, the
overburden is then refilled, and the process begins again on another strip of land. Strip mining ...

Miners systematically removed the resource and ship it to the surface. Subsurface mining is
generally done for metals such as zinc, lead, nickel, tin, gold, copper and uranium. Subsurface
mining is extremely dangerous due to natural gas explosions, which can cause shafts and tunnels to
collapse.
Open pit mining is used when a resource is spread out in a rock formation. An enormous hole is dug,
and the source is then removed. Open Pit mining is generally used for mining for gold, diamonds,
coal, copper and other resources. This method consumes a large amount of habitat that becomes lost.
Once mining is completed the pit will generally fill up with water.
Placer mining uses water to separate mud and gravel from mineral of value. The disruption of
ancient riverbeds is very harsh and environmentally destructive causing debris to be deposited into
streams and making them uninhabitable for fish or other life forms for many miles downstream.
This method is very similar to the Gold rush days in California in1849, that the practice was halted
in 1884. The disruption of stream banks, high erosion, and harming ecological plant communities

Portals that lead to the underground workings are sealed, but should have ports to monitor if there is

Paper money in the United States and other countries used to be backed by gold which became
known as the "gold standard". This meant that a person could trade paper money for its equivalent
value in gold bars. Eventually it became too difficult to maintain this standard so it is not currently
used by any country. One of the most well–known uses for gold is in jewelry which makes up about
78 percent of gold consumption. Gold is desirable for jewelry manufacturers because of its luster,
resistance to tarnish, and ability to be shaped easily. However, pure (24 karat) gold is too soft to
withstand the stress put on most jewelry, so it is often made into an alloy with silver or copper to
make it harder. Another use of gold is in electronics and computers due to its high conductivity.
Connectors, soldered joints, and connecting strips have low voltages running through them that are
easily interrupted by corrosion, which is why gold's resistance to tarnish makes it perfect for these
applications. In the medical industry, gold alloys are used for crowns, fillings, and other orthodontic
appliances because it is chemically inert and non–allergenic. Also, radioactive gold isotopes can
serve as a radiation source when treating certain cancers. Interestingly, small amounts of gold can be
injected into the eyelids of a person that suffers from lagophthalmos, which is the inability to

Yanacocha Gold Mine In Latin America Essay

In an effort to bring an end to world poverty the World Bank and IMF (International Monetary

Even though The World Bank claims that it's mission is to work towards closing the gap on

Introduction to the Mining Industry
The mining sector is made up of organisations whose primary activity is the extraction of naturally
occurring mineral solids or natural resources. Examples of these types of minerals are coal, ores and
precious stones. The mining industry also broadly covers quarrying and well operations. The sector
comprises two basic activities: mine operations and mining support activities.
"Mine operations" involve setting up the mine, quarry or well for the organization, or on behalf of
another organization for a small fee.
"Mining support activities" are those operations that must be carried out before mining begins;
exploration and other services (except site preparation and construction of oil/gas pipelines).
The mining and metal industry is made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore there will always be a demand for mining products. There are not too many competitors
as certain materials can only be mined in specific areas.
Supplier power
Supplier power is quite high in mining as most of the worlds mines are owned, or part owned, by
three of the largest mining companies in the world; Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Anglo American.
Also, as mining is one of the primary activities, there are not many suppliers. The only possible
exception is that of the machinery suppliers, but since this is so specialized, they will have little
power over the huge multinational corporations that are the mining companies. The suppliers of
mining equipment, for example Caterpillar, have little power because contracts with mining
companies go in to millions of dollars and those who supply equipment don't want to lose any
potential customers.
Threat of entry
In the mining industry the treat of entry is very small this is due to the extensive capital needed in
order to start operating a mine.
Costs include:
– Training of employers and staff.
– A strong team of well paid engineers, scientists and managers.
– The cost of the machinery.
– Maintenance costs.
– Propriety costs

The Causes And Impacts Of The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush almost did not happen. In his 1848 report to the adjutant–general at
Washington, DC, Col. Richard Barnes Mason wrote a worker was checking the strong flow of water
in a stream near a saw mill he was building. James Marshall noticed a few glittering particles in the
mud that had accumulated. He collected and examined a few of them and, satisfied with their value,
brought them to Captain John Sutter, owner of the land where the saw mill was to be built. They
agreed to keep their discovery secret for a while but word soon spread and quickly hundreds and
then thousands of miners flooded to the mines seeking instant wealth. Only three months after the
discovery, it was estimated about four thousand workers were employed mining gold in the region
(personal communication, August 17, 1848).
Getting to and surviving in the California gold mines was very expensive. Miners generally traveled
alone. Many spent about six months wages or more getting to California and then found they could
not afford to buy even basic supplies and commodities (Knysh, 2012). For example, a dozen eggs
cost $50 and one apple cost $5 (Smithsonian American Art Museum, n.d., Arrival of the forty–niners
section).Gold miners endured heavy snow and rain. They usually lived in tents. Damp outdoor
camping and poor sanitation caused scurvy, frostbite and other illnesses. A poor diet of beans, bacon
and local game were cooked over open fires. Fires often destroyed camps and towns with their

The World History of Work Restraint
throughout the vast majority of world history, work restraint of different structures has assumed a
key part in forming
the monetary structures of social order. In the established world, for example, presumably 35% of
the populace
of Roman Italy were slaves, while 25% of the number of inhabitants in antiquated Athens were
slaves . Closer to our time, bondage has been significantly more predominant
in a few social orders and has kept going up to this point. In 1680 two thirds of the individuals on
the Caribbean island of
Barbados were slaves. In 1860 slaves still made up about 13% of the whole populace
of the United States, and very nearly 50% of the populace in the US South. In expansive parts of
West Africa
slaves made up 50% of the populace in the 19th century, and in Sierra Leone bondage
was annulled by the British pilgrim state just in 1928.
slavery was not obviously the main type of work constraint. In spite of the fact that subjugation
vanished from Western
Europe in the early Medieval period, it was reinstated by feudalism where the serfs who made up
likely 90% of the populace were likewise forced and were liable to extraordinary limitations on
development
also word related decision. Somewhere else comparative frameworks emerged, for instance in
Ethiopia and India which
pretty much looked like bondage. Russian serfdom, for instance, permitted serfs to be sold much the
same as slaves,

Ethics and The Mining Industry Essay
Everyday minerals from the earth are extracted, removed and formed into something new, when you

the treasure of good deeds. Keep your desires under control and deny yourself that which you have

good to them and what is not. Develop in your heart the feeling of love for your people and let it be
the source of kindliness and blessing to them. Do not behave with them like a barbarian, and do not

Canada Has Not Taken Responsibility for the Behavior of...
Canada, which is the headquarters of Barrick Gold Corporation, runs 60 percent of the world's
mining corporations across the globe. Notwithstanding the fact that even though it is the forerunner
in this industry, Canada has not taken the lead on mediating or taking responsibility for the behavior
of their corporations abroad. The consequence of this carelessness is, Canada has drawn criticisms
from around the world, first from the environmental, religious and human rights organizations, and
now increasingly from international institutions, such as the United Nations.

Many violent clashes have also occurred between police and activists opposing Barrick's mining
operations in Peru, Chile, and Argentina.
Subsequently, the Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman of the World Bank issued a report refuting
LEAT's claims of mass murder and the number of people displaced, based on evidence supplied by
the Tanzanian government and Barrick Gold challenged this evidence. Similarly, Barrick's North
Mara mine suffered great human rights abuses under its predecessor, Canada's Placer Dome. Lissu,
who has been jailed for anti–mining activism, claims that Bar– rick's security operatives at the North
Mara mine have since been linked to six violent deaths and that the killings are part of a strategy to
silence mine critics.
Most of the conflict arises over whether the local tradition of alluvial mining became illegal under
arrangements and contracts held by the Porgera gold mine. ATA claimed that no Ipili agreed to give
up traditional rights. The company has hired a 400 men security team, which it calls Asset
Protection Department, to guard the facility. Over the years, what started as a congenial arrangement
has turned into small–scale armed conflict that has caused hundreds of injuries, sometimes 40 to 50
a day, according to

Mining Group Gold Organization
Mining Group Gold
In an organization, meetings take place on a regular basis. Today's organizations are built around
people, so interaction among team members, inter–team, inter–department etc. are very common.
The meetings cost organization in terms of time, money, and manpower utilization. Hence, effort is
made to make the meeting process more effective.
Kayser developed the Mining Group Gold model for effective meeting. He described the model in
his book called "Mining Group Gold: How to Cash in on the Collaborative Brain Power of a
Group". The sole purpose of Mining Group Gold process is to leverage the combination of wisdom,
experience, and knowledge of all the team members to improve overall meeting process and
organizational decision–making process. There are five basic steps of mining group gold for its team
meeting management process:
Step–1: Determine the purpose of the meeting: Before a meeting takes place, the purpose of the
meeting should be determined. All the participants should be informed about the purpose of meeting
beforehand, so that they come prepared and can contribute more.
Step–2: Determine the desired outcomes of the meeting: The participants should be made aware of
the desired outcome of the meeting. Determination of the desired outcome of the meeting gives the
meeting a direction and allows the participants to focus on the agenda.
Step–3: Assign the roles of facilitator, scribe, and timekeeper: A meeting is a time bound activity.

The Contamination Of The Gold Mining Company
Within the last couple of month there has been a mere excessive amount of water being polluted and
having toxic waste carelessly dumped. The Animas River of Colorado and flowing through Utah,
New Mexico, and high Northern Part of Arizona. But it's not just the that, there are plenty of lakes
and rivers that are being contaminated with toxic waste all the time. And people seem to be very
closed and okay with the fact their water sources are dirty.
Well as a Native American, some of these parts the river flows are pretty much sacred lands, and as
well as the water very vital. But due to the government and the EPA granting permission for the gold
mining company to dump their whatever waste into the river, now jeopardizing millions of people
and creatures that rely on the water source for survival. But after knowing they gave permission to
do this, the EPA had the nerves to go right around, apologize, but telling residents that live alongside
the flowing river to say the contamination was an "accident". So as for this "accidental" spill, now
people and domesticated animals can't use this source for anything. As for cleaning up, it may take a
couple years until anything good can actually come out of it. The thousands of gallon waste that
were dumped into the water leaves a very thick orange–yellow color covering the whole. And since
the part of the river flows through Northern Arizona, where a very pristine and sacred land for the
Navajo Nation, it's disturbing and a disgrace

Super Pit: Impacts On The Environment
There are over 404 different mines in Australia. Of that 404, 173 mines are located in Western
Australia. These mines vary in sizes, substance being mined and in many more ways. One of the
many mines in Western Australia is the Super Pit. This specific mine is 600 meters deep and is
located in the Kalgoorlie country town. The town was founded in 1893 during the Yilgarn–
Goldfields gold rush with a population of 31,107 people. The mine is organised and owned by the
company Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM).

Input Reducement
Water
Water is used in varied resources on a mining site. We can reduce the water amount by redirecting
surface water and pumping groundwater. This will change as mining sites can reduce the quantity
and quality of the water that is available downstream for marine ecosystems and different business
water users principally in places with dry climates.
Energy
Energy is a main source used in mining sites. For example the use to grind ore and refine copper,
coal and aluminium. By reducing the usage of electricity in mine sites it will conclude with the
reducement of green house gas emissions. This being done will increase the living of fossil fuel
reserves. Adding onto that it will reduce the cost of

California Gold And The Environmental Impacts Of Mining
The lecturer argues that hydraulic mining caused several environmental issues, which hydraulic
mining started due to the gold rush in California. "California Gold and the Environmental Impacts
of Mining" states that high levels of deforestation and floods occurred because of hydraulic mining.
The method of hydraulic mining increased the rate of finding gold, which is explained in a timeline.
In order to use hydraulic mining, people needed timber to make there tools, which created vast
amounts of deforestation. Once the tools were created, they used pressurized water to find the gold
on mountain sides. From all the water that hydraulic mining used, it created a flood and destroyed
many agricultural fields. The Sawyer Decision of 1884 was enacted

The Causes Of Child Slavery In The Philippines
Slavery Informational Essay
"In the Philippines, there are 2.1 million child labourers aged 5–17 years old" ("Child Labour in the
Philippines"). In the Philippines they used to not have laws against children working in dangerous
conditions. But, in recent decades the Philippine government has passed laws that make it illegal for
children to work in these dangerous conditions. But the laws have not been enforced as much as
they should be so children are still working in these very dangerous conditions and skipping school
to help their family. Many factors contribute to child slavery and other various problems in the
Philippines. These factors do not have to be necessarily all human. Some in fact, are because of
climate change. Some causes of problems in the Philippines are because of its own government
putting laws in place but then not enforcing them or doing anything about people who do break
them. Also, just everyday life, working conditions and wages also make it very hard to come out of
these poverty cycles. Which then children are exploited for work and do not go to school.
Climate change makes it easier for people to exploit slavery. According to Justine Calma, author of
"Climate Change Has Created a New Generation of Sex–Trafficking Victims" published in Quartz,
states "After the skies cleared, a second humanitarian disaster unfolded in the Tacloban Astrodome,
a sports arena where thousands took shelter. An underground economy took root as women and girls

The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was an event that lasted from January 24th, 1848 to 1855. The event was
driven mainly by the large quantities of gold reserves that were discovered in the soon to be US state
of California. This event caused many Americans to move from the eastern states and middle states
to California with the hopes of finding gold. In this paper, I will analyze the economy at the time the
gold rush started and attempt to answer the question of why individuals found it necessary or
advantageous to move out to California in pursuit of gold. I will also consider personal accounts and
editorials written to gain a more personal narrative of the conditions people were experiencing as
well as their mindsets in deciding whether to move to California for the gold or not. First, I would
like to consider the economic theory behind the gold rush and explain why on the surface; it is quite
simple. Consider a modern theoretical case. Say a family of four is living in Cincinnati, Ohio and
the main earner of the family works for a tool manufacturing company in Cincinnati. Suppose that
the company decides during their yearly employee reviews that they aren't going to give this certain
individual a pay raise for the next year; also suppose that the employee does not see themselves
climbing up the pay scale any further. Now suppose that this person is offered a thirty thousand
dollar per year raise if they move out to Los Angeles, California for a new machine related job.

of problems with distributing the goods to the east since there was no railway. In 1850, a new

Cerrillos Hills Park is situated on the Turquoise Trail between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, NM. It is
1125 acres large. There are 5 miles of hiking trails and historic mining sites. The Cerrillos Hills Park
is owned by the Santa Fe County and managed by Santa Fe County's Open Space Program, NM
State Parks and the Cerrillos Hills Park Coalition. It is closely linked to the colonialization and
ancient civilizations in this region. It has a tricultural antiquity that goes back to the 900 AD. It is a
volcanic chain of elevations because of the movements to tectonic plates in the bed of Rio Grande. It
is one of the oldest mining districts in South America.

1.1 INTRODUCTION
1.0.1 Background of the study
To achieve rapid economic development, many countries resort to various activities to exploit
natural resources. One of such activities is mining which is an important economic activity with the
potential of contributing to the socio–economic development of an area.
Although in South Africa, it is on a downward trend from its peak some decades ago (from 21%
contribution to GDP in 1970 to just 6% in 2011), the mining

The Mining of Metals Industry
Metals have been an important industry for mankind since the Bronze Age, gold and silver are other
important metals that were used for currency and ornamental jewelry. The Industrial Revolution
helped to usher in modern civilization by transforming iron into railway transportation and high rise
buildings in all of the major cities around the world. Concerns for the environment did not exist as
long as the metals could be extracted to fulfill the needs of the masses. Environmental concerns
about mining didn't even come about in the United States until the Resources Conservation and
Recovery Act (RCRA) in 1976 (EPA 1976). RCRA was the first Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) regulation that required a study of mining wastes from active surface and underground
mining activities. In 1985 the EPA published the Land Disposal Restrictions Phase IV which
establishes the metal–bearing waste treatment standards (EPA 1985). This includes Toxicity
Characteristic waste that is generated from mining processes with high concentration levels. The
EPA also printed the "Abandoned Mine Site Characterization and Cleanup Handbook" in 2000 to
cover all mining processes and remediation programs (Ceto and Mahmud 2000). The following
pages of this paper will concentrate on the mining practices, present contamination and remediation
factors needed to clean up many sites that are either active or abandoned. The mining of metals can

Gold Mining In South Carolina
South Carolina's commercial gold mining began in 1829, two years after the first discovery of gold
in the area [1]. Mining continued with variations in productivity until World War II, when all gold
mining was abandoned until renewed interest during the 1980s [1]. Figure 1., seen above, shows the
amount of gold produced per year in troy ounces per year and the percentage of total US gold
production [2]. Overall, gold production increases with time as newer mining techniques increase
efficiency. In 1836, South Carolina produced above 11% of total gold for the United States. During
this time, there were a number of different gold extraction techniques that involved mercury [3]. The

environment of the 19th century but many rice plantations moved to the coast during this time [20].

Illegal mining in the Peruvian Amazon has led to crime, deforestation and mercury poisoning in
local villages and has further weakened the economy. Peru is the largest producer of gold in South
America, the sixth largest in the world and in recent years Peru's remote Amazon rainforest has
become a hotspot for illegal mining. An estimated ten to thirty–thousand illegal miners work day in
and day out to remove flecks of gold from Amazonian soil using cyanide, mercury, lead and arsenic
which has in turn contaminated water sources and poisoned many in rural villages. Mining camps

It should be enough to spur the government into action, to enforce more laws and regulations and
send more military forces out to take out the operations, but it's not. Peru's economy has gone
through many changes but it is largely based on the original Incan economical system which ran
based on geographical location and what the areas had to offer. Commercial mining is the second
largest contributor the economy today, it accounts for roughly sixty percent of the country's exports
and with more than eighty companies and two hundred commercial mines it's not surprising.
However, the illegal mining bandwagon has taken a big hit to the profits coming from mining. An
estimated one billion dollars worth of gold is smuggled out of the country each year. Police are
having some luck catching and arresting those who smuggle either at airports or border crossings it
won't be enough to stop them completely. Losing all this money each year and not having enough
soldiers to stop and illegal gold rush on top of a large rate of poverty, unemployed and homeless and
many other things sounds like a frustrating situation. Compared to other countries and their
economies Peru doesn't seem very well off unfortunately. While it's hard to say whether illegal or
commercial mining is doing more damage, it's fair to say they are both taking their toll on the

Gold Mining And The Amazon Jungle
Part A
This article talks about the devastating problem Peru is having with its illegal Gold mining and the
Amazon Jungle. It begins with talking about how the author has noticed the huge change in the city
called Tambopata in the southern province called Madre de Dios (translated to Mother of God). Mr
Boyd described how he realized how much the 13 year gap in his travels to Tombopata before even
landing in the airport. The once green horizon was said to have spots of a "puss colored toxic holes".
He goes on to talk about the efforts the government has put into place to try and control the illegal
mining. The author talks about the protest from the almost twenty thousand minors that stopped
Tambopata in its tracks. Lastly Mr. Boyd speaks on who's fault is it, if it's the illegal minors trying to
feed their families of the lucrative world demand for this gold that makes this illegal activity
possible.
Peru being a decedent of two Peruvian parents, I know how far Peru has come in the past couple of
years. In the past thirsty years or so it has come out of terrorism, corruption, dictatorship, and
immense poverty outside of the major cities of Peru. Once Peru finally stabilized it started to take
advantage of its natural resources, and the rise of gold prices. The population took notice of the
money to be made with gold mining and it was only a matter of time before the illegal mining
business formed.
The main Issues here is that the illegal minors have very little choice

Kalgoorlie Gold Mine: Super Pit
Kalgoorlie Gold Mine
Preamble
The Kalgoorlie Mine, also known as the Super Pit due to its distinctive depth of 600m ( Figure 1.),
is a mine situated in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia that primarily extracts gold. Often considered to
be the largest open–cut mine in the nation, Kalgoorlie produces a tremendous 22 000 kilograms of
gold each year. The gold rush that struck Australia during 1851–1914 was primarily a result of the
discovery of many mining sites like the Kalgoorlie gold mine. The finding of the Kalgoorlie mine
by Paddy Hannan, Thoman Flanagan and Daniel Sheal attracted several thousands of other
prospectors (mineral explorers) and created a " rush" to whoever would quickly become prosperous
from mining gold at Kalgoorlie. As such,

Economic Change During The California Gold Rush And...
During the California Gold Rush and transition to statehood, California endured many economic,
sociological, political, and environmental changes. California changed economically in many ways.
An example of an important economic change is the inflation at the time of the gold rush. People
would sell things at super high prices because miners needed tools and if they were the only one in
town, they could. Another example of an important economic change is in taxes. California was
planning on collecting money to build public schools. Guess where all the money was coming from,
the taxes. The problem was, the people living in California didn't have any money. This is
significant because if the californians didn't have any money, they couldn't build the public schools.
My last example is that if you owned land, you had to prove it. New people didn't know if the land
was yours so if someone was building something on your land, you had to prove that the land was
yours or you can't make them move. This is significant because even if you owned land from the
time of mexican rule, you had to show how you got the land or when you got it or you couldn't
prove it was yours. This is how statehood and the gold rush had a HUGE impact on California.
California changed sociologically in many ways. An example of an important sociological change is
the population. At first, California wasn't a state. It had a small population and then, gold was found.
People started moving west in hope of

Morgan Gold Mining
Gold Mining By Alicia
Purpose: This report is based on gold mining in Australia particularly Mt Morgan. The purpose is to

of the extraction, separation and refinement processes of gold. As a local farmer I will argue for
"No, don't build it".
Gold, chemically known as Aurum (Au) is found throughout the earth and sea but there are natural
spots where we can recover much higher concentrations of gold. Gold is normally found associated
with quartz veins which are located in rock such as granite. There are several methods to find gold
deposits. Panning was the most common method of mining on the goldfield. Cradling is a water–

to the fact that is degrades fairly quickly while mercury stays around

Southwest Calder Valley North Of Lochwinnoch
1. Introduction
Since1970, Muirshiel Country Park has been part of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park which is
situated in the River Calder Valley north of Lochwinnoch. The park is an area of general natural
beauty with beautiful landscapes and great scenic views but people are allowed to live and work
within the area. It may look remote but it has a purpose for human activity, as in the past the land
has been used as a farm situated close to the current entrance, for field sports such as grouse
shooting and more recently for barytes mining. The mine closed in 1969, just before the opening of
the country park. (Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority [CMPA from now on], n.d.) The current use of
the park is mainly recreational, with a small network of footpaths for walkers, cyclists, and
educational groups. Other land uses include forestry, field sports, and small–scale agriculture. For
this assignment we are imagining that a gold–bearing ore outcrops on Windy Hill just to the north of
the country park.
The vein extends below the hill summit to an unknown depth and can be traced horizontally across
the landscape for at least a kilometre on either side of Windy Hill. The scope of this assignment is to
identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of building a gold mining site in this area and how
this might affect the local geology, landscape, ecology, hydrology, and overall biodiversity.

The Corruption Of Gold Mining In Suriname
The history of Suriname's independence and their lucrative mountains of gold is complicated and
treacherous. Indigenous Tribes originally inhabited Suriname, and by the late 1650's the Governor of
Barbados, Lord Willoughby settled a colony called "Willoughbyland." Lord Willoughby began
construction on multiple plantations and in slaved thousands of Africans and indigenous people. The
colony was invaded in 1667 by the Dutch who established the official name of the colony as
'Suriname.' In 1863 as slavery was being abolished, small–scale gold mining commenced. As
Suriname gained independence in 1975 with prospects of gold triggering the second gold rush. The
beginning of small–scale indigenous miners and foreign large–scale mining corruption influenced
global environmental inequality in Suriname. In 2000, Ouboter et al. (2012) stated in his case study
that the Geological and Mining Survey of Suriname (GMD) estimated that the number of small–
scale gold miners in Suriname was between 25,000 and 35,000. (873) Gold mining in Suriname is
the most significant source of employment and main export of product in the country, because of
this, the indigenous people mine to provide for their families. These small–scale indigenous miners
use mercury to extract gold because it is the cheapest and easiest way to turn the product into profit.
Mercury is used to clump the smaller pieces of gold together as its being sifted through the sluice
box. The mercury that isn't being clumped together

Placer Vs Quartz Mining Research Paper

  • 1. Placer Vs Quartz Mining Research Paper Placer and Quartz Mining Placer and quartz mining although very different can be similar. Obviously the main objective is to find gold. Another way they are similar they are destructive for hard rock mining they would blow up mountains for placer mining they would put mercury in the water to help find gold destroying many useful resources. The differences between these two types of mining are although placer mining can involve a few people hard rock mining mostly involves a large group of people and is run by large companies. Next, is refinement since the gold usually had lots of dirt covering the miners would remove as much by shaking it. They would probably send it through a strainer a couple times. with placer mining they would smash the ore and extract the gold they then wash it twice and filter it. Then they crush ... Finally there is the sluice box you would feed it with a sluice run water through it and rock it it had the same principal as the rocker but larger and fed by a sluice. Now with hard rockmining if miners found a large concentration of gold the miners would dig tunnels which was very hard and take the chunks that had gold. The way mining affected the economy in Montana was huge. Hard rock mining made tons of money mining companies were thriving until the flow of gold inflated the money leaving the mining corporations unable to make a profit. Placer mining did not have the biggest effect on the economy but still prevalent it make much money because it gold was very few and far between. There were quite a few mining towns in montana but none of them were as great as these. Helena the capital of montana was a top place tier for mining as well as Butte and Virginia ... • 5. Gold Mining in Australia When did gold mining begin in Australia? Gold has been rumoured that it was found in Australian as early as 1814, however, the first gold fields did not appear until thirty years later. Gold was found in Australia many decades before the Goldrush. The first discovery of gold was actually in New South Wales, in May 1851 by Edward Hargreaves. In fact, this was a tentative start to the Goldrush. Gold was commonly found only in New South Wales and Victoria in the days. How was gold mined? (Now and then) Well, long time ago it actually wasn't mined, it was panned. You had to search and find the right river to find gold. Then you pick a spot along the river or stream with a slow current and a spot that has large rocks or a fallen tree along the water's edge. Than you pick up your pan (metal in the day). Then dirt and gravel in scooped into the pan and then submerged into the water. The dirt and gravel will float, and because gold is heavier and denser it will say in the pan. This process uses the density of gold and the force of gravity to separate gold particles from other sedimentary deposits. Another common way in the day was sluicing. The water washes down fine gravel containing gold so that it can be directed into sluice boxes and recovered using gravity separation (where the heavy gold is trapped at the bottom and the lighter sands are washed away). The world has advanced and developed numerously. More sophisticated techniques have been developed for gold to be found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Small-Scale Mining in the Philippines: a Case Study SMALL–SCALE MINING (Lives at risk in the Philippine Gold Mines) INTRODUCTION Gold is the number one mineral produced by the Philippines in value terms. Although total local production was low relative to world production, it ranked 2nd to Africa in gold production per unit land area in 1988 and ranked 29th as top gold producer in 2002(Israel and Asirot 2002). In the year 2002–2007, the Philippines' gold production increased by 8.2%. This contributed an average of 2% gross domestic product (GDP) in the same period. The country was ranked 18th in the GFMs Gold Survey list of top 20 Gold Producing countries in 2007 (Teves 2008). The 2008 and 2009 data of the Philippine mining Almanac showed a significant amount of gold production by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 1995). High levels of mercury pollution were found on–site as well as in the affected places downstream. Williams et al. specifically asserted that there were already considerable mercury loads in some sectors of the Agusan River, where Diwalwal drains into, and that the water samples from the mining site itself showed higher concentrations than those in the other gold rush areas in the world. Although studies on the impact of mercury pollution due to small–scale mining were already numerous, they were generally technical in nature. Few works touched on the economic aspects of the problem and did so only in a superficial and summary manner. So far, there is no available study that conducted an economic analysis in a more detailed and quantitative way in the Philippines or elsewhere. Small–scale mining is not an important public revenue–generating sector for the government at present because of its largely illegal nature. Viewed in a more positive light, the activity should become a solid tax base when fully licensed, given the large number of people and economic activities dependent on it. LAWS AND INSTITUTIONS IN SMALL–SCALE MINING Laws The earliest mining law in the Philippines was Commonwealth Act 137 promulgated in 1936. This legislation had no separate provision for small–scale mining since the activity was not practiced

Westward Expansion and the American Dream Jake Tyler U.S. History 1 12 April 2012 Westward Expansion and the American Dream The experiences a nation undergoes often shape its national identity and define who they are as a country. Throughout the course of its history, America has developed a national identity which is the American Dream. The American Dream is defined as the qualities that make up America and most of its people they include; opportunity, success, determination, and ingenuity. Many events in American's history highlight the idea of the American dream between the period of its creation and the 1900's, but few have succeeded to exhibit all the qualities that make up this idea. One specific event in America's history has succeeded in demonstrating the four ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This event soon came to be known as the California Gold Rush. The 49ers of the California Gold Rush can be known as major exercisers of the American Dream by highlighting success and determination. The event itself best displays the quality of opportunity. Many of the people were taking an enormous risk by selling their farms and houses and leaving in search of something that they could never obtain. These people all had the common goal of seizing the opportunity to become rich and lead a better life. According to Ronald James writer for the Nevada Encyclopedia, "For most, the idea of striking it rich by discovering a valuable claim yielded to the ambition of earning a good wage and, if the opportunity presented itself, of raising a family in a wholesome community. Many still dreamt of sudden wealth, and gambling with stocks became the most common outlet for this hope." James demonstrates how the 49ers seized the opportunity to strike it rich in hopes of leading a healthy and opulent life. The 49ers mused on the small chance they had to strike it rich that served as a major component that piloted their determination. This highlights the American Dream because the 49ers of the California gold rush used determination to obtain the opportunity they had sought out for. Those who came to the new land were willing to live off of almost nothing on a day to day basis. Much of these people were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Pros And Cons Of Gold Mining 5. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 5.1 Conclusions From this study, we realize that Ghana has had a long standing history of gold production, dating back to the colonial era: The economy continues to be a dominant gold producer in Africa and the world. Further, gold production has contributed significantly towards the development of the economy of Ghana; providing the much needed foreign exchange earnings; as well as jobs and incomes for the citizenry. The librazilization of gold production in 1989 following the Economic Recovery Program (ERP) in 1983 allowed the operation of small scale gold mining. Small scale gold production has led to increase in gold production and export, however, liberalization, gold export and the existence of small scale gold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Given the negative influences of mining on the environment, some scholars have recommended putting an end to mining. It is the recommendation of this study that the government, policy makers and stakeholders take steps to minimize the adverse effect of gold mining, with reference to this study; illegal small scale gold mining. On the count of bottlenecks to obtaining licenses, the Small scale gold mining act stipulates that small scale gold mining is reserved for Ghanaian citizens, and as such, obtaining licenses should be made easier and accessible to prospective miners. The government can streamline the license acquiring process by setting up offices in district capitals and empowering them to grant appropriate mining licenses with minimal cost so as to allow the average Ghanaian to obtain a license to mine. Lengthy time for issuing licenses could also be avoided with effective decentralization of the process. Bribery and corruption in granting licenses should also be tackled by establishing a complaint center and a toll–free helpline and cracking down on corrupt officials who exhort money from prospective ... • 22. Impact Of Chinese Immigration Chinese immigrants have made significant contributions in America after the country was developing and recovering from the Civil War. They migrated to United States in the early 1800s and filled in the hard and long laboring jobs. They were also the essential and most important group of immigrants for constructing the railroads in the West. As the economy of United States become more industrial and successful, the numbers of Chinese immigrants and workers also increased. A number of them became entrepreneurs establishing factories and farms, creating many more jobs and contributing a positive influence to the economy of America. Furthermore, their population have grown more than any other immigrant groups during the late 1800s. As their population grow, so did the power of anti–Chinese beliefs among the workers in the American industries. This has caused the legislation to reduce the coming of Chinese working immigrants to the United States which also infuriated the relationships between United States and China. During the 1850s, many Chinese workers traveled and relocated in the United States due to the great news of the Gold Rush. Most of them were inexperienced male workers that seek for a better life for themselves and families back at home. At first, they mined for gold and worked in dangerous gold mines, but had other harsh and similar opinions such as agricultural jobs and factory jobs. Due to their hard working attitudes, they were willing to take low–wage jobs that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gold Is Money But Water Is Life Isis Wilson 04/05/16 Hennessey Gold is Money but Water is Life The search for new mining locations around the world has been significant to many mining corporations in the United States and Canada. Since the areas within these boundaries are being used up or are extremely expensive, many have taken their operations to developing countries in Latin America. El Salvador is one of the next countries that Pacific Rim, a Canadian–Australian firm that produces gold and copper, is looking to open mines in. Specifically, a gold mine located near Sensuntepeque, which is the capital of the Cabañas region and the town of San Isidro. Also scarred from an extremely traumatic twelve–year civil war, the country knows all too well of the repercussions that stem from exploitation and corruption. Today, nearly 90 percent of the Rio Lempa, the country's main water supply, is contaminated with arsenic and cyanide, leaving it virtually undrinkable (Zucker 2010). The extreme leeching process that must take place to extract the tiny particles of gold discovered in the El Dorado mine can and will be extremely detrimental to the livelihood of the Salvadoran people and the country as a whole. El Salvador's lack of natural resources, current issues of deforestation, and poverty are becoming significant factors in the bleak future that the country must prepare for. While the Pacific Rim Corporation believes that mining activity in El Salvador will create more jobs and economic growth, further exploration will and has created an environment of hostility. The Salvadorian government must continue to further their efforts to defend their current mining ban and refusal to grant extraction permits but also engage in efforts of economic empowerment and an increase of land control. After the civil war in the early 1990s, the Salvadorian government was confronted with an outstanding issue of economic and social turmoil which required the government to request for international aid. Essay on Barrick Gold and the Mine at the Top of the World Barrick Gold and the Mine at the Top of the World Introduction The purpose of this case analysis is to identify the main communication problem that the world's largest gold mining company, Barrick Gold, is facing in the midst of their major Pascua–Lama developmental project. The following paper discusses the causes of the communication problem and resulting symptoms, along with the key stakeholders that are affected and their concerning issue. Finally, this paper will provide a solution using all the steps of the communication model on how Barrick Gold can deal with all the key stakeholder groups. The Argentina governments concern is based on the fact that the royalties they receive from the mine are ¼ of the total GDP of their poor San Juan province; once the mining is finished this will regress back to zero and devastate the economy. The local farmers are concerned with the explosions that cause dust to settle on the glaciers and accelerate its melting; the effects are devastating to the whole surrounding ecosystem. The resident's of the valley share the same concern as the Argentinian government, that once the mining ceases their income will revert to zero. Finally, the shareholders of Barrick Gold are concerned with the idea of huge opposition and lack of productivity that ensued because of it. In dealing with the afore mentioned stakeholder groups, Barrick Gold can use all the steps of the communication model, including: sender, encode, channel, receiver, and feedback. First off, the Chilean government: Barrick Gold (sender) needs to think of a method that allows cyanide to be removed from the river (encode), and this idea needs to be presented face–to–face (channel) to the Chilean government (receiver); once the idea is received, Barrick Gold needs to allow for feedback (positive or negative) from this stakeholder. Secondly, the local farmers: Barrick Gold (sender) is responsible for devising a plan for decelerating the melting of the glaciers (encode) and portraying this plan, either in a proposal or in a meeting (channel), to the local farmers ... Environmental Impact Of Underwater Gold Mining Conner Sheahan Section B06 April 28, 2015 Word Count: Environmental Impacts of Underwater Gold Mining The ocean covers over seventy percent of the Earth's surface, yet humans know very little about it and its contents. With over half of the species in the ocean still undiscovered, the ocean remains a mystery, with much more to be learned about what it possesses. The ocean is home to not only life, but to natural resources. Some of the resources possessed within the ocean are minerals, such as salt, sand, gravel, and some manganese, copper, nickel, iron, cobalt, gold, diamonds, and silver [1]. Valuable crude oil is drilled from the ocean floor, and the ocean continues to produce a significant amount of oxygen for the planet. One of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nautilus' system starts with the Seafloor Production Tools (SPTs) which are located at the bottom of the sea floor approximately 1600 meters deep (about 1 mile). These SPTs are the "nozzles" of this system as they agitate the seafloor, allowing the extraction of nearly everything that the SPTs dislodge, creating this slurry filled with multiple precious and non–precious metals. The SPTs are connected by large pipes to a Subsea Slurry Lift Pump (SSLP), which is basically a big pump that sends the slurry up the Riser and Lifting System (RALS) and into the ship on the ocean surface. The ship, known as the Production Support Vessel (PSV), is heart of the operation and where production starts. The slurry mixture, comprised of copper, gold, silver, zinc, and sand is separated on the vessel and all of the material in the slurry are used or sold. The precious metals are used or sold to buyers throughout the world, and the sand and other non–precious minerals are used for concrete production. This type of operation is nearly one hundred percent efficient as every part of the slurry is used and sold [3]. Although this form of mining is profitable and nearly one hundred percent effective, this process may greatly disturb the ocean floor. The environmental impacts of this mining process can be minimized but are still relatively impactful. The ocean has already been damage by overfishing, industrial waste, debris and ... Western Gold Mining Industry In North America Out of Luck "In and out of this nest the human ants poured all day and night, for in wet–sinking the labour must be kept without ceasing all through the twenty–four hours, Sundays included" (R. Byron 115). Between 1858 and 1863, two major gold rushes occurred in Canada. Thousands of men and women, of all ages, set off to seek laborious fortune in North America. It was evident that the journey would be strenuous, yet the greed overpowered any consideration of failure. Due to this, the western gold mining society was often portrayed as a society full of "grubby miners, instant wealth, [and] raucous living" (Anonymous). It was the journey, living conditions, and greed that eventuated in failures to most of the miners. For many, unfortunately, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gold was the only thought lingering around in people's minds. The miners needed it, and they were greedy enough to reach extreme heights to have it. Meanwhile, Sir James Douglas began rounding up policemen to arrest domestic miners within the camps . The population of miners grew smaller and smaller every day and dreams of finding gold were crushed by the minute. The few that were left were "wild men who had easy access to liquor and a taste for yellow dust" (G. Bowering). Unfortunately, with the mindsets and drunkenness of those miners, not much was achieved at that time, and very few left with what they wanted. With the disastrous number of obstacles and temptations that were faced throughout the journey, this result was inevitable. The amount of greed brewing inside each one of the miners would eventually lead to an ill–fated turn of events, and sadly, it didn't come into realization until all the harm was ... • 50. General Mining Act Research Paper The General Mining Act of 1872 encourages people and companies to prospect for minerals on federally owned land. This encourages US citizens and businesses to stake a claim on the plot of land and patent the claim for about $5 per acre. (Withgott) Until recently, there was no requirement to restore the land after mining. Several mining techniques have been used over the years. From strip mining, subsurface mining to open pit, placer, and mountaintop mining. Strip mining is a process where layers of surface soil and rock are removed and exposed. The overlaying soil called, overburden is set aside while the resource is extracted. Once completed, the overburden is then refilled, and the process begins again on another strip of land. Strip mining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Miners systematically removed the resource and ship it to the surface. Subsurface mining is generally done for metals such as zinc, lead, nickel, tin, gold, copper and uranium. Subsurface mining is extremely dangerous due to natural gas explosions, which can cause shafts and tunnels to collapse. Open pit mining is used when a resource is spread out in a rock formation. An enormous hole is dug, and the source is then removed. Open Pit mining is generally used for mining for gold, diamonds, coal, copper and other resources. This method consumes a large amount of habitat that becomes lost. Once mining is completed the pit will generally fill up with water. Placer mining uses water to separate mud and gravel from mineral of value. The disruption of ancient riverbeds is very harsh and environmentally destructive causing debris to be deposited into streams and making them uninhabitable for fish or other life forms for many miles downstream. This method is very similar to the Gold rush days in California in1849, that the practice was halted in 1884. The goal of reclamation is to return the mine site to its pre–mining state while minimizing erosion, and protecting the public and surrounding wildlife. Portals that lead to the underground workings are sealed, but should have ports to monitor if there is a buildup of toxic gases or water. Paper money in the United States and other countries used to be backed by gold which became known as the "gold standard". This meant that a person could trade paper money for its equivalent value in gold bars. Eventually it became too difficult to maintain this standard so it is not currently used by any country. One of the most well–known uses for gold is in jewelry which makes up about 78 percent of gold consumption. Gold is desirable for jewelry manufacturers because of its luster, resistance to tarnish, and ability to be shaped easily. However, pure (24 karat) gold is too soft to withstand the stress put on most jewelry, so it is often made into an alloy with silver or copper to make it harder. Another use of gold is in electronics and computers due to its high conductivity. Connectors, soldered joints, and connecting strips have low voltages running through them that are easily interrupted by corrosion, which is why gold's resistance to tarnish makes it perfect for these applications. In the medical industry, gold alloys are used for crowns, fillings, and other orthodontic appliances because it is chemically inert and non–allergenic. Also, radioactive gold isotopes can serve as a radiation source when treating certain cancers. Interestingly, small amounts of gold can be injected into the eyelids of a person that suffers from lagophthalmos, which is the inability to completely close their eyes (King, ... • 62. Introduction to the Mining Industry The mining sector is made up of organisations whose primary activity is the extraction of naturally occurring mineral solids or natural resources. Examples of these types of minerals are coal, ores and precious stones. The mining industry also broadly covers quarrying and well operations. The sector comprises two basic activities: mine operations and mining support activities. "Mine operations" involve setting up the mine, quarry or well for the organization, or on behalf of another organization for a small fee. "Mining support activities" are those operations that must be carried out before mining begins; exploration and other services (except site preparation and construction of oil/gas pipelines). Also, as mining is one of the primary activities, there are not many suppliers. The only possible exception is that of the machinery suppliers, but since this is so specialized, they will have little power over the huge multinational corporations that are the mining companies. The suppliers of mining equipment, for example Caterpillar, have little power because contracts with mining companies go in to millions of dollars and those who supply equipment don't want to lose any potential customers. Threat of entry In the mining industry the treat of entry is very small this is due to the extensive capital needed in order to start operating a mine. • 67. The Causes And Impacts Of The California Gold Rush The California Gold Rush almost did not happen. In his 1848 report to the adjutant–general at Washington, DC, Col. Richard Barnes Mason wrote a worker was checking the strong flow of water in a stream near a saw mill he was building. James Marshall noticed a few glittering particles in the mud that had accumulated. He collected and examined a few of them and, satisfied with their value, brought them to Captain John Sutter, owner of the land where the saw mill was to be built. They agreed to keep their discovery secret for a while but word soon spread and quickly hundreds and then thousands of miners flooded to the mines seeking instant wealth. Only three months after the discovery, it was estimated about four thousand workers were employed mining gold in the region (personal communication, August 17, 1848). Getting to and surviving in the California gold mines was very expensive. Miners generally traveled alone. Many spent about six months wages or more getting to California and then found they could not afford to buy even basic supplies and commodities (Knysh, 2012). For example, a dozen eggs cost $50 and one apple cost $5 (Smithsonian American Art Museum, n.d., Arrival of the forty–niners section).Gold miners endured heavy snow and rain. They usually lived in tents. Damp outdoor camping and poor sanitation caused scurvy, frostbite and other illnesses. A poor diet of beans, bacon and local game were cooked over open fires. The Causes Of Child Slavery In The Philippines Slavery Informational Essay "In the Philippines, there are 2.1 million child labourers aged 5–17 years old" ("Child Labour in the Philippines"). In the Philippines they used to not have laws against children working in dangerous conditions. But, in recent decades the Philippine government has passed laws that make it illegal for children to work in these dangerous conditions. But the laws have not been enforced as much as they should be so children are still working in these very dangerous conditions and skipping school to help their family. Many factors contribute to child slavery and other various problems in the Philippines. These factors do not have to be necessarily all human. Some in fact, are because of climate change. Some causes of problems in the Philippines are because of its own government putting laws in place but then not enforcing them or doing anything about people who do break them. Also, just everyday life, working conditions and wages also make it very hard to come out of these poverty cycles. Which then children are exploited for work and do not go to school. The event was driven mainly by the large quantities of gold reserves that were discovered in the soon to be US state of California. This event caused many Americans to move from the eastern states and middle states to California with the hopes of finding gold. In this paper, I will analyze the economy at the time the gold rush started and attempt to answer the question of why individuals found it necessary or advantageous to move out to California in pursuit of gold. I will also consider personal accounts and editorials written to gain a more personal narrative of the conditions people were experiencing as well as their mindsets in deciding whether to move to California for the gold or not. First, I would like to consider the economic theory behind the gold rush and explain why on the surface; it is quite simple. Consider a modern theoretical case. Say a family of four is living in Cincinnati, Ohio and the main earner of the family works for a tool manufacturing company in Cincinnati. Suppose that the company decides during their yearly employee reviews that they aren't going to give this certain individual a pay raise for the next year; also suppose that the employee does not see themselves climbing up the pay scale any further. Now suppose that this person is offered a thirty thousand dollar per year raise if they move out to Los Angeles, California for a new machine related job. Assuming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although in South Africa, it is on a downward trend from its peak some decades ago (from 21% contribution to GDP in 1970 to just 6% in 2011), the mining ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 124. The Mining of Metals Industry Metals have been an important industry for mankind since the Bronze Age, gold and silver are other important metals that were used for currency and ornamental jewelry. The Industrial Revolution helped to usher in modern civilization by transforming iron into railway transportation and high rise buildings in all of the major cities around the world. Concerns for the environment did not exist as long as the metals could be extracted to fulfill the needs of the masses. Environmental concerns about mining didn't even come about in the United States until the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) in 1976 (EPA 1976). RCRA was the first Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation that required a study of mining wastes from active surface and underground mining activities. In 1985 the EPA published the Land Disposal Restrictions Phase IV which establishes the metal–bearing waste treatment standards (EPA 1985). This includes Toxicity Characteristic waste that is generated from mining processes with high concentration levels. The EPA also printed the "Abandoned Mine Site Characterization and Cleanup Handbook" in 2000 to cover all mining processes and remediation programs (Ceto and Mahmud 2000). The following pages of this paper will concentrate on the mining practices, present contamination and remediation factors needed to clean up many sites that are either active or abandoned. The mining of metals can be separated into three different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 128. Gold Mining In South Carolina South Carolina's commercial gold mining began in 1829, two years after the first discovery of gold in the area [1]. Mining continued with variations in productivity until World War II, when all gold mining was abandoned until renewed interest during the 1980s [1]. Figure 1., seen above, shows the amount of gold produced per year in troy ounces per year and the percentage of total US gold production [2]. Overall, gold production increases with time as newer mining techniques increase efficiency. In 1836, South Carolina produced above 11% of total gold for the United States. During this time, there were a number of different gold extraction techniques that involved mercury [3]. The common rocker, which looks similar to a child's crib, was ... It is possible that the same connection existed in South Carolina. The combination of mercury from gold mining, rice fields and high intake of rice mirrors the environment of the 19th century but many rice plantations moved to the coast during this time [20]. It is unknown if the mercury would have affected the rice plantations over that area or if any negative effects were noted at the time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 132. Peru Illegal Mining Illegal mining in the Peruvian Amazon has led to crime, deforestation and mercury poisoning in local villages and has further weakened the economy. Peru is the largest producer of gold in South America, the sixth largest in the world and in recent years Peru's remote Amazon rainforest has become a hotspot for illegal mining. An estimated ten to thirty–thousand illegal miners work day in and day out to remove flecks of gold from Amazonian soil using cyanide, mercury, lead and arsenic which has in turn contaminated water sources and poisoned many in rural villages. Mining camps run rampant with crime, including sex trafficking and slave labor, poaching is common and litter is scattered everywhere. These miners have come from cities across Peru ... It should be enough to spur the government into action, to enforce more laws and regulations and send more military forces out to take out the operations, but it's not. Peru's economy has gone through many changes but it is largely based on the original Incan economical system which ran based on geographical location and what the areas had to offer. Commercial mining is the second largest contributor the economy today, it accounts for roughly sixty percent of the country's exports and with more than eighty companies and two hundred commercial mines it's not surprising. However, the illegal mining bandwagon has taken a big hit to the profits coming from mining. An estimated one billion dollars worth of gold is smuggled out of the country each year. Police are having some luck catching and arresting those who smuggle either at airports or border crossings it won't be enough to stop them completely. Losing all this money each year and not having enough soldiers to stop and illegal gold rush on top of a large rate of poverty, unemployed and homeless and many other things sounds like a frustrating situation. Compared to other countries and their economies Peru doesn't seem very well off unfortunately. While it's hard to say whether illegal or commercial mining is doing more damage, it's fair to say they are both taking their toll on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 136. Gold Mining And The Amazon Jungle Part A This article talks about the devastating problem Peru is having with its illegal Gold mining and the Amazon Jungle. It begins with talking about how the author has noticed the huge change in the city called Tambopata in the southern province called Madre de Dios (translated to Mother of God). Mr Boyd described how he realized how much the 13 year gap in his travels to Tombopata before even landing in the airport. The once green horizon was said to have spots of a "puss colored toxic holes". He goes on to talk about the efforts the government has put into place to try and control the illegal mining. The author talks about the protest from the almost twenty thousand minors that stopped Tambopata in its tracks. Lastly Mr. Boyd speaks on who's fault is it, if it's the illegal minors trying to feed their families of the lucrative world demand for this gold that makes this illegal activity possible. Peru being a decedent of two Peruvian parents, I know how far Peru has come in the past couple of years. In the past thirsty years or so it has come out of terrorism, corruption, dictatorship, and immense poverty outside of the major cities of Peru. Once Peru finally stabilized it started to take advantage of its natural resources, and the rise of gold prices. The population took notice of the money to be made with gold mining and it was only a matter of time before the illegal mining business formed. The main Issues here is that the illegal minors have very little choice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 140. Kalgoorlie Gold Mine: Super Pit Kalgoorlie Gold Mine Preamble The Kalgoorlie Mine, also known as the Super Pit due to its distinctive depth of 600m ( Figure 1.), is a mine situated in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia that primarily extracts gold. Often considered to be the largest open–cut mine in the nation, Kalgoorlie produces a tremendous 22 000 kilograms of gold each year. The gold rush that struck Australia during 1851–1914 was primarily a result of the discovery of many mining sites like the Kalgoorlie gold mine. The finding of the Kalgoorlie mine by Paddy Hannan, Thoman Flanagan and Daniel Sheal attracted several thousands of other prospectors (mineral explorers) and created a " rush" to whoever would quickly become prosperous from mining gold at Kalgoorlie. • 144. Economic Change During The California Gold Rush And... During the California Gold Rush and transition to statehood, California endured many economic, sociological, political, and environmental changes. California changed economically in many ways. An example of an important economic change is the inflation at the time of the gold rush. People would sell things at super high prices because miners needed tools and if they were the only one in town, they could. Another example of an important economic change is in taxes. California was planning on collecting money to build public schools. Guess where all the money was coming from, the taxes. The problem was, the people living in California didn't have any money. This is significant because if the californians didn't have any money, they couldn't build the public schools. My last example is that if you owned land, you had to prove it. New people didn't know if the land was yours so if someone was building something on your land, you had to prove that the land was yours or you can't make them move. This is significant because even if you owned land from the time of mexican rule, you had to show how you got the land or when you got it or you couldn't prove it was yours. This is how statehood and the gold rush had a HUGE impact on California. California changed sociologically in many ways. An example of an important sociological change is the population. At first, California wasn't a state. It had a small population and then, gold was found. People started moving west in hope of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 148. Morgan Gold Mining Gold Mining By Alicia Purpose: This report is based on gold mining in Australia particularly Mt Morgan. The purpose is to decide if a gold mine is should be built near Mt Morgan (QLD) by considering the scientific impact of the extraction, separation and refinement processes of gold. As a local farmer I will argue for "No, don't build it". Gold, chemically known as Aurum (Au) is found throughout the earth and sea but there are natural spots where we can recover much higher concentrations of gold. Gold is normally found associated with quartz veins which are located in rock such as granite. There are several methods to find gold deposits. Panning was the most common method of mining on the goldfield. Cradling is a water– based method, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pollution is one of the key environmental impacts. Mercury is still used in gold mining in our developing world despite safer alternatives. According to the United Nations Industrial Organization it is estimated that 1000 tonnes of mercury is released into the air, soil and water each year. Mercury is highly toxic therefore it can cause serious illness even death to both humans and animals. Cyanide is extremely lethal but as it is an environmental contaminant it is not as problematic as mercury due to the fact that is degrades fairly quickly while mercury stays around ... • 152. Southwest Calder Valley North Of Lochwinnoch 1. Introduction Since1970, Muirshiel Country Park has been part of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park which is situated in the River Calder Valley north of Lochwinnoch. The park is an area of general natural beauty with beautiful landscapes and great scenic views but people are allowed to live and work within the area. It may look remote but it has a purpose for human activity, as in the past the land has been used as a farm situated close to the current entrance, for field sports such as grouse shooting and more recently for barytes mining. The mine closed in 1969, just before the opening of the country park. (Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority [CMPA from now on], n.d.) The current use of the park is mainly recreational, with a small network of footpaths for walkers, cyclists, and educational groups. Other land uses include forestry, field sports, and small–scale agriculture. For this assignment we are imagining that a gold–bearing ore outcrops on Windy Hill just to the north of the country park. The vein extends below the hill summit to an unknown depth and can be traced horizontally across the landscape for at least a kilometre on either side of Windy Hill. The scope of this assignment is to identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of building a gold mining site in this area and how this might affect the local geology, landscape, ecology, hydrology, and overall biodiversity. 2. Methodology We carried out this assignment by going on a field visit to Muirshiel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 156. The Corruption Of Gold Mining In Suriname The history of Suriname's independence and their lucrative mountains of gold is complicated and treacherous. Indigenous Tribes originally inhabited Suriname, and by the late 1650's the Governor of Barbados, Lord Willoughby settled a colony called "Willoughbyland." Lord Willoughby began construction on multiple plantations and in slaved thousands of Africans and indigenous people. The colony was invaded in 1667 by the Dutch who established the official name of the colony as 'Suriname.' In 1863 as slavery was being abolished, small–scale gold mining commenced. As Suriname gained independence in 1975 with prospects of gold triggering the second gold rush. The beginning of small–scale indigenous miners and foreign large–scale mining corruption influenced global environmental inequality in Suriname. In 2000, Ouboter et al. (2012) stated in his case study that the Geological and Mining Survey of Suriname (GMD) estimated that the number of small– scale gold miners in Suriname was between 25,000 and 35,000. (873) Gold mining in Suriname is the most significant source of employment and main export of product in the country, because of this, the indigenous people mine to provide for their families. These small–scale indigenous miners use mercury to extract gold because it is the cheapest and easiest way to turn the product into profit. Mercury is used to clump the smaller pieces of gold together as its being sifted through the sluice box. The mercury that isn't being clumped together ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
