Overview
• Technical services, responsibilities are a
continuing process that goes on day after day.
• Library provides various types of services in
order to keep pace on the purpose of it’s
establishment that is to serve the society and
fulfill societal informational needs.
• Generally these services may be known
various as according to their requirements by
user.

Definition of Technical Services
Techne=technology=technical.
Servitium=serf=service.
• All the tasks carried on in a library that are
concerned with the processing of library material
in order to make them accessible to the user of the
library are called technical services .Gorman,
Michael.(2005)technical services today and
tomorrow. Libraries unlimited.
• These services categories in such : general,
informational, public or secondary services and
other are technical services (primary services).

• Technical services are the services that aids to the informational
services in the library these services as mentioned above includes :
• Collection development
The process of building and maintaining libraries
collection.(Google)
• The collections in the library is developed by many of different
ways to meet the need of library users
• Collection in the library is build by purchasing. In this source of
collection building the library uses their own sources either given to
it or self generated sources from penalties, by selling their products
and services also
• An other source of building collection the gift or exchange system in
these ways the library either exchange the sources with other
libraries or people of influence gifts their belongings to the library.

Technical processing
• The process of making library material searchable
among the thousands of other material.
• The process comprises of many of the elements such as
accessioning in which library assigns a unique number
to acquired material, classification by assigning
notation to library material in order to arrange the
material on shelves in the library, cataloguing
reappearing a systematical list of documents that
provides bibliographical information shows exact
location of the documents, labeling it means to post a
label on spine of the books and inside the book that
may contains information of deferent types i.e. call
number etc.

Bibliographies
• The other most important work that is done in
technical services is preparation of
bibliographies to control over the
informational need of user by telling him what
material the library posses on a particular
subject or topic of user’s interest.

Preservation
• The process of prolonging age of library documents by
treating the library belongings from natural or
manmade disasters such as :
• Room maintenance (temperature, dust, humidity, light
control, preventive meurse from mishandling, insects
etc.
• Conservation treatment of damaged library material by
laminating, fumigation, de-acidification, washing etc.
• Binding that is a common activity is the library to bind
the books and other material to save them from directly
damage to the inside.

Reprography
• Reprography is a part of preservation that
means the reproduction and duplication of
documents, written materials, drawings,
designs, etc., by any process making use of
light rays or photographic means, including
offset printing, microfilming, photography,
office duplicating, and the like.

electrography and photocopy.

Signage
• Common signage and directive signage
• In the library there becomes many of signposts
that tell user where to find what to find.
• These signage are of two types common and
directive signage.
Common are those such as welcome, create,
learn, I am here to help you and so on.
Directive signage are the signs that direct
library user such as instructions how to use
catalogue, what they may find in 000 to 999 etc.

Reviews
• Reviews is also known as a technical service
in which library provides review to their
clients about the documents that what the
document is about, what does it cover, who
can read it etc means critical examination.

Abstracting
• Preparation of abstracts of deferent articles
available in the library to help information
seekers by informing about most important
ideas in the articles.

Indexing
• Indexing is also known as a one of most
important technical service that is very much
useful in locating narrow approach on any
specific topic in journal, books etc.

Serial Management
• A library acquires serial of many types and
also maintains them in the library for readers,
scholars, teachers. The responsibility lies on
the technical department to maintain them in
the library by binding all the individual
acquired volumes of a journal together and
placing cardex on them because this comes
under technical service.

Automation
• The use of computers and machines instead of
people to do a job.(Longman dictionary of
contemporary english.2009)and establishment
of unendable operations in the library.
• Automating a library is also a technical service
that will create an easy environment in the all
activities in the library.

Digitization
• Though all the other services, but this one is
essential technical service that makes
traditional analogue documents into digital
portable form and increase maximum
accessibility to them.

Resource sharing/ Consortium/
Cooperation
• Resource sharing is the applicable in
sharing of documents, manpower, services,
space and
equipments.(http://irjlis.com/resource-sharing-
in-libraries-a-vital-role-of-consortia/).
Resource sharing among the libraries in
modern time is common to facilitate library
users batter.

Translation Service
• Translation service is one of most important
service the information centers provide
translation contents of information into the
required formats.

• Maintenance etc

Personal, registers, schemes for classifications, cataloguing rules

Conclusion
Having kept an eye on all above given
information, the sought out conclusion is that
there are many of services that a library
provides, but not necessary the libraries
themselves without asking. All the services a
library may design according to the use of
library and the nature of user. These services
may be provided to the user on deeming or
without asking, may be changed or free of cost
it depends.

Overview • Technical services, responsibilities are a continuing process that goes on day after day. • Library provides various types of services in order to keep pace on the purpose of it’s establishment that is to serve the society and fulfill societal informational needs. • Generally these services may be known various as according to their requirements by user. 5
  • 6. Definition of Technical Services Techne=technology=technical. Servitium=serf=service. • All the tasks carried on in a library that are concerned with the processing of library material in order to make them accessible to the user of the library are called technical services .Gorman, Michael.(2005)technical services today and tomorrow.   • 12. • Technical services • Technical services are the services that aids to the informational services in the library these services as mentioned above includes : • Collection development The process of building and maintaining libraries collection.(Google) • The collections in the library is developed by many of different ways to meet the need of library users • Collection in the library is build by purchasing. In this source of collection building the library uses their own sources either given to it or self generated sources from penalties, by selling their products and services also • An other source of building collection the gift or exchange system in these ways the library either exchange the sources with other libraries or people of influence gifts their belongings to the library. 12

Technical processing • The process of making library material searchable among the thousands of other material. • The process comprises of many of the elements such as accessioning in which library assigns a unique number to acquired material, classification by assigning notation to library material in order to arrange the material on shelves in the library, cataloguing reappearing a systematical list of documents that provides bibliographical information shows exact location of the documents, labeling it means to post a label on spine of the books and inside the book that may contains information of deferent types i.e. call number etc. 14
  • 15. Bibliographies • The other most important work that is done in technical services is preparation of bibliographies to control over the informational need of user by telling him what material the library posses on a particular subject or topic of user’s interest. 15

Preservation • The process of prolonging age of library documents by treating the library belongings from natural or manmade disasters such as : • Room maintenance (temperature, dust, humidity, light control, preventive meurse from mishandling, insects etc. • Conservation treatment of damaged library material by laminating, fumigation, de-acidification, washing etc. • Binding that is a common activity is the library to bind the books and other material to save them from directly damage to the inside. 16

Reprography • Reprography is a part of preservation that means the reproduction and duplication of documents, written materials, drawings, designs, etc., by any process making use of light rays or photographic means, including offset printing, microfilming, photography, office duplicating, and the like. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/reprograph y. The term comprises thermograph, electrography and photocopy. 17

Signage • Common signage and directive signage • In the library there becomes many of signposts that tell user where to find what to find. • These signage are of two types common and directive signage. Common are those such as welcome, create, learn, I am here to help you and so on. Directive signage are the signs that direct library user such as instructions how to use catalogue, what they may find in 000 to 999 etc. 18
  • 19. Reviews • Reviews is also known as a technical service in which library provides review to their clients about the documents that what the document is about, what does it cover, who can read it etc means critical examination. 19
  • 20. Abstracting • Preparation of abstracts of deferent articles available in the library to help information seekers by informing about most important ideas in the articles. 20
  • 21. Indexing • Indexing is also known as a one of most important technical service that is very much useful in locating narrow approach on any specific topic in journal, books etc. 21
  • 22. Serial Management • A library acquires serial of many types and also maintains them in the library for readers, scholars, teachers. The responsibility lies on the technical department to maintain them in the library by binding all the individual acquired volumes of a journal together and placing cardex on them because this comes under technical service. 22

Automation • The use of computers and machines instead of people to do a job.(Longman dictionary of contemporary english.2009)and establishment of unendable operations in the library. • Automating a library is also a technical service that will create an easy environment in the all activities in the library. 23
  • 24. Digitization • Though all the other services, but this one is essential technical service that makes traditional analogue documents into digital portable form and increase maximum accessibility to them. 24

Resource sharing/ Consortium/ Cooperation • Resource sharing is the applicable in sharing of documents, manpower, services, space and equipments.(http://irjlis.com/resource-sharing- in-libraries-a-vital-role-of-consortia/). Resource sharing among the libraries in modern time is common to facilitate library users batter. 25
  • 26. Translation Service • Translation service is one of most important service the information centers provide translation contents of information into the required formats. 26

Conclusion Having kept an eye on all above given information, the sought out conclusion is that there are many of services that a library provides, but not necessary the libraries themselves without asking. All the services a library may design according to the use of library and the nature of user. These services may be provided to the user on deeming or without asking, may be changed or free of cost it depends. 28
