The Theory Of Leadership Theory
Chapter sixteen discusses various leadership theories which can implemented by leaders to achieve
success. The choice of leadership theory differs from leader to leader as they possess different vision
and way of managing. A theory isn 't always perfect in itself, it is the endless effort of the leaders
which makes the theory a perfect one. Two approaches of leadership that I prefer are Situational
Leadership Theory and Servant Leadership Theory. Among many theories I prefer these two because
I tend to practice those principles most of the time and I assume these are theories that I truly tend to
continue in a long run.
Situational Leadership is also called as Hersey–Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory. Paul
Hersey the author of "Situational Leader" and Ken Blanchard the author of " The One Minute
Manager" are the one who introduced this theory (Hersey–Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory,
2010–2015). The principle behind this theory is that every theory is not perfect in itself and the
effectiveness of the theory is determined by the situation (Kreitner, 2013, p. 472). One of the
important lesson that I have learned till this day is no one can be prepared for the upcoming
problems. Problems may have same nature but may be different in the way it has to be solved. For

Leadership is a very complex and important aspect of not only business but life. Leadership is an
important skill that can come easy to some, but also can be a learned skill. Leadership has been
around as long as human beings have walked this earth. Great leaders of the past include Alexander
the Great, George Washington, Pope John Paul II, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership is a
complicated subject and has had many studies done to help understand its elements and what it takes
to become a great leader. There are five major leadership theory classifications include, trait,
behavioral, contingency, integrative, and management to the leadership. According to Lussier and
Achua, "A leadership paradigm is a shared mindset that represents a fundamental way of thinking
about, perceiving, studying, researching, and understanding leadership." (p. 19). This essay will list
and define the leadership theory paradigms.
The first leadership theory is the trait theory paradigm. According to Lussier and Achua,
"Leadership trait theories attempt to explain distinctive characteristics accounting for leadership
effectiveness." (p. 19). Early theories on leadership were based on the belief that leaders were born
with the necessary characteristics required to be an effective leader. The trait theory paradigm
theorized that a list of traits existed that researchers could find in all effective leaders. Lussier and

Leadership is an influential factor in the success and failure. If an organization is failing, look at the
leader, not the economy; not the market; look at the leader. The movements and influence of a leader
determines the fate of those under her or him. The importance of leadership cannot be
underestimated. The importance of leadership has constantly been debated and a part argumentative
discussion. There is no one approach to leadership, however leadership theories try to make sense of
various approaches to leadership. James G. Clawson is considered an authority in leadership
theories. His Level III leadership theory is about managing energy, first in leader, and then in those
around the leader.
One of the most noted ways to manage energy is transformational leadership. James MacGregor
Burns defined the concept of a "transformational leader as a process where "leaders and their
followers raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation. Warren Bennis Theory of
Leadership and Bernard Bass's Theory of Leadership exhibit the goal of transformational leadership
is to "transform" people and organizations in a literal sense – to change them in mind and heart;
enlarge vision, insight, and understanding; clarify purposes; make behavior congruent with beliefs,
principles, or values; and bring about changes that are permanent, self–perpetuating, and momentum

Introduction
In today's world, leaders are not defined by age, race or gender. They can be a high school
basketball coach, the shift supervisor at the local coffee shop, or even the President of the United
States of America. In as many ways that leaders can vary by appearance and responsibility, there is
also a variance in the ways that they lead. This case study aims to compare three of the more popular
theories of leadership. These leadership theories are situational leadership, trait theory and
transformational leadership.
Summary of Theories
Situational leadership, developed by professor Paul Hersey and author and consultant Ken
Blanchard. Their approach was based off of a 1967 article by W.J. Reddin called The 3–D
Management Style Theory. In his article, Reddin discusses the need to have different styles based on
the demands of the leader. A leader needs to be flexible in their approach to meet the needs of the
job, their superior and their subordinates (1967). Hersey and Blanchard progressed this theory by
introducing the Situational Leadership II model. Their model breaks leadership into four different
styles, and how a leader must alter their approach in supporting and directing their subordinates
based on a given situation. These styles are directing (S1), coaching (S2), supporting (S3) and

During this course, the focus has been on leadership and the different theories of leadership. There
are either eight to ten leadership theories, depending on the source. Those leadership theories
describe different aspects of what it takes to be a leader and the skills and traits of people who are
considered leaders. There are two different sets of leadership theories. According to Cherry (2012),
when it comes to leadership theories, "most can be classified as one of eight major types." Those
eight major types are called the "Great Man" Theories, Trait theories, Contingency Theories,
Situational theories, Behavioral theories, Participative theories, Management theories, and
Relationship theories. Those eight leadership theories are similar to the ten leadership theories
discussed by Zigarelli. According to Zigarelli (2013), There are ten leadership styles that all have
useful aspects to them, and the more that a person learns about all ten theories, they better equipped
they will be to become a leader. The ten leadership theories are identical in some areas to the eight

Servant leadership is a leadership theory that originated from the works of Robert Greenleaf in the
early 1970s (Northouse, 2016). According to the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership
(2016), Greenleaf was not the first person to create the idea of serving others through leadership, but
he does hold the responsibility of coining the term, and applying it to the modern world. This

Students differ in their maturity level, ability to learn, motivation, priorities, personality, as well as
many other factors that put them on different levels (Rajbhandari, 2014). These differences are very
obvious when it comes to being in the classroom and assigning projects, and observing that some
students need more help than others. It is relatively easy to label a student with the Situational

Communication, the author of this paper was asked to identify his leadership theory, one leadership
theory the author identified with was the visionary leadership style. According to the article
Leadership Styles, published in the Wall Street Journal, visionary leadership requires the leader to
start the employee off. Leaders that fall under the visionary leadership styles, tend to give little
direction and let the individual that is completing the task put a creative flair on the project (Wall
Street Journal). Calia Robins, author of Characteristic of Visionay Leadership, states that all
visionary leader have goals that they share, the goals are as follows: vision, organized learning,
innovation, building relationships, and pioneering (Robins). Another leadership theory that I
identified with was the directive leadership theory. A completely opposite of visionary leadership
theory, directive leadership style requires the supervisor to set objectives for his or her staff and

Leadership has been an emerging topic, where over the last twenty to thirty years research has
shown it to be of critical value. According to DeRue (2014), the depth and richness of existing

A leader needs to be specific enough so that their staff can understand the vision and be fundamental
so that the staff understands the importance of the goal to the overall success of the organization.
After establishing the goals and presenting them to your staff, a leader needs to establish the level of

There are many theories concerning leadership, and how these theories classify various individuals
and their particular style of leadership. Leaders throughout the ages have led in different ways,

The Great Man Theory became very popular in the 19th century (Leadership Theories – In

During this time period, leadership positions were held mostly by men, who passed their leadership

  • 1. The Theory Of Leadership Theory Chapter sixteen discusses various leadership theories which can implemented by leaders to achieve success. The choice of leadership theory differs from leader to leader as they possess different vision and way of managing. A theory isn 't always perfect in itself, it is the endless effort of the leaders which makes the theory a perfect one. Two approaches of leadership that I prefer are Situational Leadership Theory and Servant Leadership Theory. Among many theories I prefer these two because I tend to practice those principles most of the time and I assume these are theories that I truly tend to continue in a long run. Situational Leadership is also called as Hersey–Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory. Paul Hersey the author of "Situational Leader" and Ken Blanchard the author of " The One Minute Manager" are the one who introduced this theory (Hersey–Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory, 2010–2015). The principle behind this theory is that every theory is not perfect in itself and the effectiveness of the theory is determined by the situation (Kreitner, 2013, p. 472). Leadership is an important skill that can come easy to some, but also can be a learned skill. Leadership has been around as long as human beings have walked this earth. Great leaders of the past include Alexander the Great, George Washington, Pope John Paul II, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership is a complicated subject and has had many studies done to help understand its elements and what it takes to become a great leader. According to Lussier and Achua, "Leadership trait theories attempt to explain distinctive characteristics accounting for leadership effectiveness." (p. 19). If an organization is failing, look at the leader, not the economy; not the market; look at the leader. The movements and influence of a leader determines the fate of those under her or him. There is no one approach to leadership, however leadership theories try to make sense of various approaches to leadership. James G. Clawson is considered an authority in leadership theories. His Level III leadership theory is about managing energy, first in leader, and then in those around the leader. One of the most noted ways to manage energy is transformational leadership. James MacGregor Burns defined the concept of a "transformational leader as a process where "leaders and their followers raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation.
