Underrepresentation In Superhero Comic Books
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a... black Superman? With the representation of all identities growing in
different forms of media, superhero comic books have picked up this trend and have begun to
introduce characters with diverse backgrounds. Due to the previously mentioned occurrence, readers
of different creeds, sexual orientation, and ethnicities are being introduced to the world of
superheroes. With this new trend, many questions arise concerning the impact and necessity of
underrepresentation and fairness. How have superhero comic books widened their depiction of
underrepresented communities, and what role does history play on the characters of comic books?
More specifically, how have Marvel and DC Comics been affected by history, and ... Show more

Superheroes such as Miles Morales, Kenan Kong, and Jaime Reyes taking the title of Spiderman,
Super–Man, and Blue Beetle all have one thing in common; they epitomize an underrepresented
ethnic and racial community. Axel Alonso, the creator of the half–Hispanic, half–black Spider–Man
(Miles Morales), explains, "Miles is but one face in a diverse landscape of heroes that includes
Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), Sam Wilson (Captain America) and Amadeus Cho (the Hulk), and
offers readers of all creeds and colors a chance to see their own reflection" (Moreno, 2016, para.
10). Just like the creation of Batwoman, Miles Morales' creation is due to the fact that creators
wanted to be able to reach every member of their audience. However, "often lost in the intersection
between superheroes and science fiction is the place race occupies in the genre, and when it is
addressed, the discussion frequently turns to framing the genre as racially biased," (Nama, 2008, p.
134). For these reasons, many comic book creators refrain from addressing these issues, since it may
lead to them being accused of conforming to a stereotype. Even so, "the audience for comics is a
truly multicultural one; in fact, it is more ethnically diverse than are the heroes the young people
read about" (Brown, 1999, p.

The Impact Of Comics And Superheroes On The American Society
Impact of Comics and Superheroes on the American SocietyA superhero is an anecdotal character of
extraordinary physical prowess committed to demonstrations of derring–do in general society
interest. Since the introduction of Superman in 1938, stories of superheroes from short to long
episode adventures; have ruled American comic books and traversed into other media. These
superheroes and comics have been used to display both negative and positive social and cultural
values in the American society. Captain America, , Superman, Simon Baz and Kamala Khan are
most prevalent in comic books and they are role models to many teenagers and adults in the society.

The use of archetypal elements in distinguishing heroes and villains is not is largely used in
superhero comics and they appear in a variety of popular fiction, revealing the values of the
hegemonic culture through its villains. When discussing the phenomenon of a popular culture item
reflecting the sentiments of a nation, one should not uncritically equal the superhero with America.
Despite the fact that the superhero can be said to typify the national character that is particularly
America (Reynolds, 1992, 18), one ought to be aware that the qualities and ideals anticipated on to
the hero are usually those of the dominant, hegemonic culture, whereas the villains usually possess
those qualities which the hegemonic culture views as undesirable. This is a typical narrative in well
known fiction, discussed in several comics for example Muslim Girl and the Green Lantern Corps,
where the hero is given all the positive social values while the villain portrays the negative social
vices for example racism and sexism. This archetyping is important since racism has been a
common vice in the American society.
The early 1960s was the time of a major reevaluation of youth culture as an economic, social, and
political force. Embodying these new advancement were the alienated anti–heroes of Marvel
Comics whose quirks spoke of modifying of the formulas for comic book superheroes. In 1962

The History of Marvel Comics
Marvel Worldwide, Inc., commonly referred to as Marvel Comics (formerly Marvel Publishing, Inc.
and Marvel Comics Group) is an American publisher of comic books and related media. Marvel,
founded by Martin Goodman, started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early 1950s had

How Did Steve Rogers Influence Captain America
Captain America's Impact on America Throughout the years, several different superheroes have been
created. Some were written for fun while others had a precise motive. Captain America is a prime
example of being created for a specific reason. Often, people do not realize that the classic Captain
America was conceived out of the horrors of World War II, which began in the late 1930s. Captain
America's influence on America through the past seventy–five years is one that amazes most people.
Jack Kirby and Joe Simon created Captain America on March 1, 1941, right before Japan bombed

Stanley Martin Lieber, also known as Stan Lee, is a publisher, author, editor, and television
producer. However, he is best known for being the president and chairman of Marvel Comic. He
might not be someone who created their own company, but he did create many of everybody's
favorite superheroes. Stan Lee made a difference in the world of superheroes.
Stan Lee was born on December 28, 1922 in New York City. Growing up, Stan lived with his
mother, father, and little brother, Larry. Both of his parents were immigrants from Russia who
traveled to America, before having Stan. He was growing up during the Great Depression, and he
and his brother had to watch as his parents struggled to provide for them. As a child, Stan always
loved writing, so it was no surprise when he started working as an assistant in Timely Comics.

He could also fly and at a top speed of 60 mph. The sub –Mariner was a man/mermaid hybrid that

History of Comic Books
The distribution, audience, narrative style, and dramatic content, of comic books were the direct
descendants of the pulp magazine. They were called pulp magazine because they were printed on
the cheapest paper for non–costly mass distribution, these publications were as old as newspaper
comic strips. Pulp magazines can be traced to their Civil War–era ancestors, called dime novels.
Unlike the funnies, pulp magazines styles were outside of the mainstream and featured adventure,
fantasy, and suspense. In 1933, Harry Wildenberg and Max Gaines took the traditional comic and
folded it in half and then created the first four–color newsprint comic. It would became the new
format which is still seen in modern comic books still today.
The biggest rise in comic books was World War II, because the comic had two underling messages
at the time that kept the industry alive: social reform and patriotism. The DC superhero comics
implicitly stressed a common interest in public welfare and strong federal government all based its
comics around the Social status of America at the time. While Marvel comics took up the cause of
WWII patriotism in the early creation of Captain America, by showing Captain America punching
Hitler. The biggest underling message of comics during the Golden Age is the defense of normal
people and good citizens. After WWII, the energy driving the Golden Age died off, but that didn't
mean that the comic book industry was done creating new heroes or done expanding it

The Avenger Superhero Vs Female Superhero
Comic books have been around since 1933;in addition superhero movies have become immensely
popular throughout the years. Comics are now a new way for people to escape their reality and look
up to superheroes because they might have a deep connection towards them. Superheroes to me are
symbols of plenty of things, such as peace, love and justice. Many superheroes are male and some
are female however, they are all portrayed in a certain manner that divides the male and the female
superheroes; female superheroes are perceived as sex symbols while males are shown as strong,
brave, and masculine heroes.
Two of the major superhero universes are the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and DC Comics.
Both have a variety of superheroes and supervillains. Over the course of time, Marvel female
superheroes have become a bigger part of big movie franchises such as The Avengers. The MCU
integrated Black Widow portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, into the group of The Avengers. She was
the only female character until future films were released such as The Avengers Age of Ultron in
which Scarlet Witch portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen becomes a part of the teams of The Avengers.

sex symbol. In The Avengers release movie poster Black Widow is shown ... Show more content on

Superhero Comics : The Age Of Marvel Essay
Superhero movies have become increasingly popular over the past two decades. From the success of
comic book adaption movies such as Batman in 1989, the 21st century could arguably be called the
age of superhero movies. Nowadays, comic book companies such as Marvel and DC Comics are
making much more money from motion pictures than from actual comic books. As University of
Calgary professor Bart Beaty (2016) states, "... it has become clear that [superhero comic books] are
no longer a significant popular cultural phenomenon in their own right; rather, superhero comic
books have become the source material for more lucrative media forms ranging from movies and
television, to video games and licensed properties like toys and t–shirts" (p. 318). In fact, three of
the top ten highest grossing movies of all time (Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and The
Avengers) are based on superheroes (All Time Worldwide Box Office Grosses). Ever since the
inception of superhero movies in the nineties, film companies saw the potential to making a lot of
money by capitalizing on bringing the many stories of various superheroes to the big screen.
However, with film companies so focused on financial gain, it is easy to unintentionally disregard
context and deep characterization in favour of big action set pieces. While the superhero genre
brings fresh and creative ideas to the cinemas, since they are initially created due to profitability,
most comic book adaption movies are poorly–written and

However, the difference lies in the quality of the movie. DC's extremely successful Christopher
Nolan Batman trilogy was a smash hit, grossing over one billion dollars in the box office (Box
Office Mojo). Since then, DC has produced Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman, Suicide Squad,
and Green Lantern, all critically underwhelming. On the other hand, since the release of Iron Man in
2008, Marvel Studios has been exponentially increasing in popularity and box office success. The
total revenue of eight billion dollars almost triples that of DC's total revenue. Furthermore, Marvel's

American Comics And Japanese Manga
I. Abstract
When mention comics, everyone can think of America comics and Japanese manga. They are two
big parts of world comics and represent western and eastern comics. So they will have some
differences in style, content and development. America comics is mainly about superheroes and
reflects individualistic heroism. Japanese manga has many genres.
II. Introduction
Comics is a kind of medium that uses drawing and writing to tell a story. Cartooning is the most
common mean in comics. Comics can be divided into two kinds. One is English–language comics,
another is Japanese manga. America comics is the representation of English–language comics. As

It is the generic terms of combinatorial pictures' works, and it is also magazine that publish these
kind of works. Highly developed Japanese manga has already become a big school that has its own
particular style on the world comics.
V. The comparison of America comics and Japanese manga.
America comics and Japanese manga are two important and big comic schools. Although they have
some similar aspects, they have more differences because of different background. Then, I will
compare these two kinds of comics in three aspects.
A. Styles and content
The first is drawing style. America comics is almost about superheroes, these characters are drawn
hasty and careless. And it is colorful. Japanese manga's pictures are delicate, and its characters are
beautiful.
The second is content. America comics is just about superheroes, and it mainly express
individualistic heroism. Its stories are more close to reality, and its content is almost about fighting.
Japanese manga's themes are abundant. "It includes works in a broad range of
genres: action–adventure, romance, sports and games, historical drama, comedy, science among
others."[3]Every aspect of live can be drawn to manga. Japanese manga is more flexible than
America comics.
B. Development
"American historians generally divide comics chronologically into «ages». The first period, called
«Golden Age», extends from 1938 (first appearance of Superman) to 1954

For instance, the influence of comic books is seen widely across our culture with superheroes
branded and intertwined within our entertainment, clothing and politics. Culturally, comic books
have created a society in which individuals can escape their troubles and immerse themselves in the
world of science fiction and superheroes. These comic books and superheroes exemplify
characteristics of bravery, strength and honesty–qualities that have a positive impact on our nation's
youth. In correlation, comic books have political consequences as this medium was often used as
tools to instill patriotism and propaganda. For example, in Jack Kirby's illustrations, the viewer
often sees American soldiers defeating and fighting Nazis or take Captain America for an example.
Captain America epitomizes the perception Americans have on our nation–strong, unbeatable and
lawful. In addition to infusing a sense of patriotism, comics often depict political events or people.
Additionally, these superheroes have had a "super" impact on American Culture. Over the decades
since their creation, billions of dollars have been spent and gained through comic books, movies and

in which comics serve as a vehicle for a narrative, grabbing the reader's attention with vivid

The X–Men movie franchise is based off the popular Marvel comic of the same name; This means
that the narratives in the movie franchise are adapted from the narratives of the comic books;
something Waterhouse–Watson and Kendal (2012) discuss while discussing Prater's (2012) view;
they say "Based on comics from the 1960s and 70s, Prater argues that the more recent films

It is an interesting view, highlighting how passive the audience becomes to hegemonic beliefs in a

What Waterhouse–Watson and Kendal (2012) were stating, about the "X–Men" film franchise, also

Persuasive Essay On Marvel Entertainment
Walt Disney owned Marvel Entertainment have for the past many years been the unquestioned and
inaccessible supreme ruler of the superhero movie business. Even When DC Comics make

the box office and several other avenues of recognition.
Discussions, debates and arguments from fans of the two sides over who's the actual king if they

We all can't wait to see the blockbusting action as the trailers have given us a hint of the sort
astonishment we are in for. As if that's not exciting enough, they will be unveiling Ben Affleck as
the new dark knight of Gotham City "Bruce Wayne."
What does this mean for Marvel? The success of Dawn of Justice means that Marvel will have
finally gotten a formidable opponent in the superhero movie business. The failure of Dawn of
Justice means that marvel is still king. However Marvel,is still on the defensive here as they will
also be giving us "Captain America III – Civil War" on May 6th which also stares two of their
mightiest superheroes. Civil War pits Steve Rogers "Captain America" against Tony Stark "Iron
Man" as the two also take their differences to the battle field. Doubtless, also one of the most looked

It puts Marvel at the disadvantage when you remember that we've seen Captain America and Iron
Man side by side twice so far, in Avengers Assemble and Avengers Age of Ultron. This denies the
Marvel fans of the "it's the first time this is happening" excitement that the DC fans are currently
drowning in, hence giving DC an upper hand on who has more "unseen before" for the fans to be

History Of American Comic Comics Superheroes
History of American Comic Book Superheroes.
Before they become significant box–office phenomena and debut for TV serious, superheroes were
short stories in printed media. Supermen, Batman, Captain America, Wonder Woman ...were comic
books superheroes. The idea of superheroes was long existed. However, as many comic books
historians agreed, The Phantom, published in February 17, 1936, is considered to be the first comic
book costumed hero. Since then, comic books superheroes were booming. In the mid–1940s,
collectively, American comic books publishers sold between eighty million to hundred million
copies every week. Though there is a difference on the span of years, historians divided the history
of comic books superheroes into periods. Starting from the first golden age, this paper will point out
and discuss the major historical events and phenomena that American superheroes comic books
went through time.
Golden Age
Some scholars claimed the period spans from 1938 to 1949 and others say up to 1956. Despite its
range of year's controversy, they all agreed that, during this period the popularity of comic books
reached its peak, both in terms of commercial success and cultural significance. The starting point
for this period is usually associated with the coming of man in a red and blue costume, lifting a car
over his head– Superman. Superman was the first comic superhero character to have powers far
beyond a normal human being. Consequently, the arrival of Batman, Wonder

The First Appearance Of Batman Essay
1938 saw the first appearance of Batman. More of a mystery comic than a superhero comic book,
Batman was inherently different from the pure and clean Superman. He was a gritty and depressing
character that has been able to remain in print even to this day. Rather than using superpowers,
Batman uses detective abilities that allowed him to solve cases and find perpetrators. ("The History
of Comic Books." TheComicBooks.com.) But not even Batman, Superman, or even Captain Marvel
could brace themselves for the arrival of the Marvel comics.
Originally under the name of Timely Comics, Marvel was founded by Martin Goodman, who was
contacted by several superhero veterans from Funnies Inc. The Funnies group told him that they
would present to him a prepared, finished comic book every month, for a service fee. So in 1939,
Marvel released their very first comic Issue #1. The story was about the Original Human Torch; who
was an android superhero, the detective Angel, and Namor the Submariner.
In 1940 there was a rise in popularity for patriotic themed superheroes caused by the creation of the
hero the Shield. As a result, in 1941, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon created the second most iconic
superhero in Marvel comics, Captain America. ("Marvel comics database.") Captain America,

Similarities Between The Marvel Vs. DC : The Rivalry Unfolds
Marvel vs. DC: The Rivalry Unfolds Marvel vs. DC comics is a battle that began in the early 90's
and has never ceased since. Both gaining an abundant amount of recognition from fans worldwide.
From little toddlers to fully grown adults, the numbers continue to spread like wildfire. However,
what are the major similarities and differences between both comics? The similarity is that, both
incorporated all heroes in one setting, attempted to focus on different genres that disregarded
superheroes, and started developing heroes again by adding more personal issues to the comics. For
differences, Marvel was set on real world locations while those in DC were more fictional and
Marvel heroes developed powers overtime while those in DC were originally born with abilities.
These reasoning's stated above, depict crucial differences between both companies while also

Big Influence On American Culture Essay

In the past couple years, there has been a noticeable uprise of comic items like movies, books and
merchandise. The comics have a big influence on American culture ever since the 1940's. Ever since
then comics have an impact on the way people do, and see things. An example is the first comic
cover of Captain America punching Hitler in the face. That cover showed that anyone could be a
hero and that it was reflecting current events of the time by showing that America was in World War
2. Comic book superheroes have made a huge difference on what American culture is ever since
their first appearance in 1938 and that impact can be seen in the literature, business, and Film

to reflect the era the audience was living in. 1935 came around and the first comic book character

Lee was in the lowest point of his comic book career and was about to change careers. He decided to

being a family turned superhero team and Spider–Man being the first teen superhero that was not a

Peter Parker was a "hard working honor student" constantly rejected being seen as a nerd. One day,
however, Peter is bitten by a radioactive spider that somehow grants Peter the "proportionate speed,
strength and agility of a spider" (Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider–Man). After finding
these powers, Peter later exploits them for himself as a wrestler winning money nightly. One night, a

characters. Just to name a few, there is Batman and his infamous "The Batsignal". "The Batsignal"

Marketing Strategy Of Marvel Enterprises
Marvel Enterprises is well known for its superhero characters that includes Spiderman, X–men and
the hulk. Just like any other organization it has faced serious problems which it has to solve for a
better future. The most important objective is to reevaluate its marketing strategy. In 1998, the
company filed for bankruptcy which did not come as a shock because it was obviously facing
strategic management issues. But in 2004, after a great comeback in the entertainment industry, it
managed to increase its market value to $2 billion. Currently, the company deals with comic book
publishing, toys, motion picture, and licensing operations. However, it originally began only
publishing comic books. Eventually, it acquired other comic book publishers, which was a big step
and generated strong performance. But, it all came falling down when the top management was
accused of mismanaging the company for their personal gains. At this point, the company was in a
big problem but in 1999, the hiring of other new executives led to improved performance. Marvel
Enterprises always stayed ahead of its biggest competition, DC Comics but at this point Marvel is
fighting itself. It must develop a strong business model to sustain the company in the future. The

Marvel is well known for their superheroes in the US and internationally. Recently Japan released

include their loss of big name editors, bad former management, and mainstream focus. The
opportunities Marvel have are their future movie film releases, the recent collaboration with Disney,
more international opportunity, and an expanding industry. Threats include competitors such as DC,
failed movie releases, and government. A strategy I would employ would be capitalize on what
Marvel has already started which is the film industry. Since their releases of Iron Man and The Hulk,
Marvel has been receiving tons of recognition from comic book and non comic book fans. Movies
are great for people who don't want to read the comic books, but still want to know the story. A two

Superhero Archetype Research Paper
Many people see superheroes as figures of power, truth, justice, and protectors of the common good.
It is not uncommon for people in real life to give someone the title of superhero when that person
does a heartless or brave deed. This leads many people to wonder where exactly these attributes of a
superhero originated. The basic superhero characteristics of the archetype is a modern creation, first
being seen at the beginning of the twentieth century. In modern popular fiction, a superhero is a
costumed heroic character who uses superhuman or supernatural powers or goes through intense
training to become a living weapon. Superheroes are dedicated to fighting crime, protecting the
populace, and often battling supervillains and other evildoers. Some superheroes use their powers
and abilities to combat crime while also countering threats against humanity from supervillains, who
are their criminal counterparts. Most superheroes have at least one supervillain, known as an
archenemy or archnemesis, that will devote all of their energy to vanquishing a superhero (Smith
508). The superhero archetype has a common origin with the play The Scarlet Pimpernel which
started the trend of a masked vigilante who leads a double life and is a crusader for justice. ... Show

Controversy Of Superhero
Most of us here have read a comic book at one point in our life. Whether it is a newspaper comic
strip or a superhero comic book. Two popular comic books publishers are Marvel and DC. Many
superhero comics have been adapted into movies, like: Avengers, Iron man, X–men and just recently
released, Deadpool. But even though these publishers have been successful for almost 10 years,
there are still controversies about how women are portrayed/treated in comic books.
Firstly, let's go back to the late 1930's, during this time, the most popular superheroes were
Superman and Captain Marvel, there were barely any female superheroes during that time. But there
were some supporting female characters like Lois Lane, who was Superman's girlfriend, she was

Since then, she has been the most powerful DC superheroes. She also appeared in some animated

but over the course of time, she was being represented as a sex object. Another problem is how
female superheroes are drawn by comic book publishers, they have tiny waists, slim figure and wear
skintight costumes.
So here are more examples how women are illustrated in comic books: Poison Ivy from Batman
series uses toxins from plants to create love potions to catch and seduce Batman and other male
characters. Emma Frost also known as White Queen uses her power to control and manipulate men
in order to gain power. However, there are some well written female superheroes, for instance
Shadowcat from X–Men series, who broke all the stereotypes. She was a teenager who suffered

The Innocent By Fredric Wertham
Introduction Comic books originated in the 1930s and superhero comics rose to popularity quickly
becoming the most prominent comic books within the first decade. The most popular original
superhero comics included Superman, Batman, Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Wonder
Woman. Superman was originally published in 1938 and is considered to be the first of its kind, the
super–powered protagonist, beginning the heroic genre. These comics grew to such popularity so
quickly that almost immediately they became adapted into shows and films. Superman paved the

The Hearings that focused on comic books specifically were in order to prove that people like
Wertham were correct – and could also testify – their argument that comic books cause harm. The
hearings took place in New York where they would discuss horror comics and other comics in "bad
taste" that could only further its impact on youths becoming delinquents (Coville).
Both situations caused comic book distributors to take the stories off of the racks consequently
leading to a serious decline in sales and popularity. Superheroes have been created within a
completely different dimension of our own, thus creating its own form of language and allowing the
fans to exist within two dimensions at the same time.
The lack of popularity led the books to be uncommon which led to quite a stereotype: only nerds
read superhero comics. This stereotype impacted the language used within and about this
community. Originally, it was considered normal for people to converse about superheroes but, after
the popularity died down, it became nerdy for people to talk about and eventually they developed
their own conversation and own use of vocabulary that became unknown to people outside of the

American Superheroes Influence On Society During The 1940s
The 1940s were known as the golden age of comics. Many superheroes recognizable in mainstream
popular culture today originated during this time, becoming favorites of the young and old alike.
Unsurprisingly, superheroes usually experience their greatest success during times of transition and
uncertainty, such as America moving from economic crisis into armed conflict (Bainbridge 746).
While this essay will be focusing on the overall influence of all American Superheroes on society
during the 1940s, a specific focus will be placed on two of the most well known created heroes:
Superman and Captain America. Both Superman and Captain America first emerged as the nation
was coming out of the Great Depression and headed into World War II (Bainbridge 746). Therefore,
protagonists like these two as well as comic books in general were crucial during the 1940s because
they acted as lighthearted distractions from real–world issues, devices of cultural influence as well
as a big source of earning for publishers.

Over the last several decades many comic book movies have been released to box office success.
The industry is one that has continued to flourish because of evolving technology to make exciting
and creative displays for entertainment. Comics as a source of entertainment wasn't always the case.
Between the Great Depression and the War, living the American Dream had become a far–fetched
idea. Comic books and the introduction of superheroes provided society to escape into a fantasy
world where everything wrong in the world was nonexistent thanks to these heroes. Additionally, the
continued development of superheroes became proved to be positive role models for kids. The
expansion of superhero popularity in the media showed that superheroes' thinking about law and
justice spread beyond comics, reaching a large audience (Bainbridge

Marvel Cons
Are you a Marvel comic and movie fan? If yes, you need to check this out! Marvel Comics was
released way back in the 1960's, and a lot of kids and young fellas are crazy to buy these comics for
good. There are many superheroes there like Captain America, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor,
The X–Men and so on. Comic issues are updating for decades until it was decided to be shown to
TV as cartoons. In the late 1990's, Marvel has released it's first cartoon series known as the X–Men.
They're composed of mutants such as Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, The Beast, Jean Grey. Gambit,
Jubilee and Professor X. After that, Marvel Studios decided that they should bring these characters
to life by going into the big screen. As a result, they have tremendous ... Show more content on

This blind superhero has been on the big screen, but it never gets a chance to perform a sequel.
However, he has the ability to see through magnetic sound waves (and even rain, when he finally
see the beautiful face of Carmen Elektra). Right now, he's got another chance to prove himself by
reincarnating himself in this new Netflix TV series. On the other hand, Jessica Jones is another
series that you should be looking forward to. She opens a new detective agency called the Alias
Investigations. She does have supernatural powers, but only used them occasionally. The Punisher,
Luke Cage and The Iron Fist are also having their own series. Here's one question that you need to
ask Marvel.
Are these superheroes gonna combine in one single series?
It may be possible, and it may not. If it's indeed possible, it might take a long time for the producers
and writers to work this out. If it's possible to combine fictional superheroes as Avengers, they can
be possible too. There were rumors that Jessica Jones are going to face–off against the Punisher. If
this is true, it would be amazing for the fans to see this. When it comes for these 5 superheroes to
meet–up with each other in one single series, there's a lot of work to do for Marvel. It would be fun
to see these superheroes to combine forces with each other.
However, we don't know who their enemy is. For now, it's too early to decide whether Marvel is
going to make this happen or not. Nothing

Underrepresentation In Superhero Comic Books

  • 1. Underrepresentation In Superhero Comic Books It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a... black Superman? With the representation of all identities growing in different forms of media, superhero comic books have picked up this trend and have begun to introduce characters with diverse backgrounds. Due to the previously mentioned occurrence, readers of different creeds, sexual orientation, and ethnicities are being introduced to the world of superheroes. With this new trend, many questions arise concerning the impact and necessity of underrepresentation and fairness. How have superhero comic books widened their depiction of underrepresented communities, and what role does history play on the characters of comic books? More specifically, how have Marvel and DC Comics been affected by history, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Superheroes such as Miles Morales, Kenan Kong, and Jaime Reyes taking the title of Spiderman, Super–Man, and Blue Beetle all have one thing in common; they epitomize an underrepresented ethnic and racial community. Axel Alonso, the creator of the half–Hispanic, half–black Spider–Man (Miles Morales), explains, "Miles is but one face in a diverse landscape of heroes that includes Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), Sam Wilson (Captain America) and Amadeus Cho (the Hulk), and offers readers of all creeds and colors a chance to see their own reflection" (Moreno, 2016, para. 10). Just like the creation of Batwoman, Miles Morales' creation is due to the fact that creators wanted to be able to reach every member of their audience. However, "often lost in the intersection between superheroes and science fiction is the place race occupies in the genre, and when it is addressed, the discussion frequently turns to framing the genre as racially biased," (Nama, 2008, p. 134). For these reasons, many comic book creators refrain from addressing these issues, since it may lead to them being accused of conforming to a stereotype. Even so, "the audience for comics is a truly multicultural one; in fact, it is more ethnically diverse than are the heroes the young people read about" (Brown, 1999, p. ... The Impact Of Comics And Superheroes On The American Society Impact of Comics and Superheroes on the American SocietyA superhero is an anecdotal character of extraordinary physical prowess committed to demonstrations of derring–do in general society interest. Since the introduction of Superman in 1938, stories of superheroes from short to long episode adventures; have ruled American comic books and traversed into other media. These superheroes and comics have been used to display both negative and positive social and cultural values in the American society. The use of archetypal elements in distinguishing heroes and villains is not is largely used in superhero comics and they appear in a variety of popular fiction, revealing the values of the hegemonic culture through its villains. When discussing the phenomenon of a popular culture item reflecting the sentiments of a nation, one should not uncritically equal the superhero with America. Despite the fact that the superhero can be said to typify the national character that is particularly America (Reynolds, 1992, 18), one ought to be aware that the qualities and ideals anticipated on to the hero are usually those of the dominant, hegemonic culture, whereas the villains usually possess those qualities which the hegemonic culture views as undesirable. This is a typical narrative in well known fiction, discussed in several comics for example Muslim Girl and the Green Lantern Corps, where the hero is given all the positive social values while the villain portrays the negative social vices for example racism and sexism. This archetyping is important since racism has been a common vice in the American society. The early 1960s was the time of a major reevaluation of youth culture as an economic, social, and political force. Embodying these new advancement were the alienated anti–heroes of Marvel Comics whose quirks spoke of modifying of the formulas for comic book superheroes. • 15. History of Comic Books The distribution, audience, narrative style, and dramatic content, of comic books were the direct descendants of the pulp magazine. They were called pulp magazine because they were printed on the cheapest paper for non–costly mass distribution, these publications were as old as newspaper comic strips. Pulp magazines can be traced to their Civil War–era ancestors, called dime novels. Unlike the funnies, pulp magazines styles were outside of the mainstream and featured adventure, fantasy, and suspense. In 1933, Harry Wildenberg and Max Gaines took the traditional comic and folded it in half and then created the first four–color newsprint comic. It would became the new format which is still seen in modern comic books still today. The biggest rise in comic books was World War II, because the comic had two underling messages at the time that kept the industry alive: social reform and patriotism. The DC superhero comics implicitly stressed a common interest in public welfare and strong federal government all based its comics around the Social status of America at the time. While Marvel comics took up the cause of WWII patriotism in the early creation of Captain America, by showing Captain America punching Hitler. Comics are now a new way for people to escape their reality and look up to superheroes because they might have a deep connection towards them. Superheroes to me are symbols of plenty of things, such as peace, love and justice. Many superheroes are male and some are female however, they are all portrayed in a certain manner that divides the male and the female superheroes; female superheroes are perceived as sex symbols while males are shown as strong, brave, and masculine heroes. Two of the major superhero universes are the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and DC Comics. Both have a variety of superheroes and supervillains. Over the course of time, Marvel female superheroes have become a bigger part of big movie franchises such as The Avengers. The MCU integrated Black Widow portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, into the group of The Avengers. She was the only female character until future films were released such as The Avengers Age of Ultron in which Scarlet Witch portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen becomes a part of the teams of The Avengers. • 21. Superhero Comics : The Age Of Marvel Essay Superhero movies have become increasingly popular over the past two decades. From the success of comic book adaption movies such as Batman in 1989, the 21st century could arguably be called the age of superhero movies. Nowadays, comic book companies such as Marvel and DC Comics are making much more money from motion pictures than from actual comic books. As University of Calgary professor Bart Beaty (2016) states, "... it has become clear that [superhero comic books] are no longer a significant popular cultural phenomenon in their own right; rather, superhero comic books have become the source material for more lucrative media forms ranging from movies and television, to video games and licensed properties like toys and t–shirts" (p. 318). In fact, three of the top ten highest grossing movies of all time (Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and The Avengers) are based on superheroes (All Time Worldwide Box Office Grosses). Ever since the inception of superhero movies in the nineties, film companies saw the potential to making a lot of money by capitalizing on bringing the many stories of various superheroes to the big screen. However, with film companies so focused on financial gain, it is easy to unintentionally disregard context and deep characterization in favour of big action set pieces. While the superhero genre brings fresh and creative ideas to the cinemas, since they are initially created due to profitability, most comic book adaption movies are poorly–written and ... DC's extremely successful Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy was a smash hit, grossing over one billion dollars in the box office (Box Office Mojo). Since then, DC has produced Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman, Suicide Squad, and Green Lantern, all critically underwhelming. On the other hand, since the release of Iron Man in 2008, Marvel Studios has been exponentially increasing in popularity and box office success. A superhero is not always born with heroic abilities and tendencies to want to fight crime and seek out justice. There comes a specific moment or event in a superhero's life that instills a sense of justice in them that makes him or her want to act on it by using their supernatural powers to make society a better and safer place to live. For example, the traumatic moment in which young Bruce Wayne watched as his parents were murdered right in front of him caused Bruce to want to avenge them by becoming a crusader against crime. In most cases, superheroes do not become superheroes before having some sort of traumatic or tragic moment occur in their lives. Peter Parker's Uncle Ben, Bruce Wayne's parents and ... Most people around the world have heard of the company, but where did their company originate, and who is responsible for their massive success? Marvel Comics, more commonly known to the public as Marvel, originates in New York City, New York. Here, great stories, ideologies, and characters are born. Characters that may seem impossible to relate become easily identifiable to readers new and old since 1944. He decided to give it one last go by writing two different superhero stories: The Fantastic Four and The Amazing Spider–Man. These two stories defied the superhero graphic at the time with the Fantastic Four being a family turned superhero team and Spider–Man being the first teen superhero that was not a sidekick. Spider–Man put a grand effect on people as it put a realistic high school student struggling with the loss of his parental figure. The origin of Spider–Man is shown in Amazing Fantasy #15. Peter Parker was a "hard working honor student" constantly rejected being seen as a nerd. One day, however, Peter is bitten by a radioactive spider that somehow grants Peter the "proportionate speed, strength and agility of a spider" (Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider–Man). After finding these powers, Peter later exploits them for himself as a wrestler winning money nightly. One night, a thief is running from a cop with Peter in front of him. Instead of stopping the thief, Peter arrogantly lets the thief go and tells the cop, "Sorry, pal! That's your job!... From now on I just look out for number one –– that means –– me!" (Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider–Man). Peter would later find out that the same thief he had let escape would kill his Uncle Ben. After he hands the thief to the police as Spider–Man, he tells himself, "If only I had stopped when I could have! But I didn't –– and now –– Uncle Ben –– is dead" (Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider–Man). In the story, Parker is an intelligent, socially awkward, and often bullied young teenager who has parental figures in his life. However, it is quite evident which of the two companies has had, not just the most successful run, but the most influential run. Some of such heroes being, Superman, Batman, Zatman, the Flash, Captain Atom, Robin, Wonder Woman, and the list continues. Just like any other organization it has faced serious problems which it has to solve for a better future. The most important objective is to reevaluate its marketing strategy. In 1998, the company filed for bankruptcy which did not come as a shock because it was obviously facing strategic management issues. But in 2004, after a great comeback in the entertainment industry, it managed to increase its market value to $2 billion. Currently, the company deals with comic book publishing, toys, motion picture, and licensing operations. However, it originally began only publishing comic books. Eventually, it acquired other comic book publishers, which was a big step and generated strong performance. But, it all came falling down when the top management was accused of mismanaging the company for their personal gains. At this point, the company was in a big problem but in 1999, the hiring of other new executives led to improved performance. • 68. Superhero Archetype Research Paper Many people see superheroes as figures of power, truth, justice, and protectors of the common good. It is not uncommon for people in real life to give someone the title of superhero when that person does a heartless or brave deed. This leads many people to wonder where exactly these attributes of a superhero originated. The basic superhero characteristics of the archetype is a modern creation, first being seen at the beginning of the twentieth century. In modern popular fiction, a superhero is a costumed heroic character who uses superhuman or supernatural powers or goes through intense training to become a living weapon. Superheroes are dedicated to fighting crime, protecting the populace, and often battling supervillains and other evildoers. Some superheroes use their powers and abilities to combat crime while also countering threats against humanity from supervillains, who are their criminal counterparts. Most superheroes have at least one supervillain, known as an archenemy or archnemesis, that will devote all of their energy to vanquishing a superhero (Smith 508). The superhero archetype has a common origin with the play The Scarlet Pimpernel which started the trend of a masked vigilante who leads a double life and is a crusader for justice. ... Two popular comic books publishers are Marvel and DC. Many superhero comics have been adapted into movies, like: Avengers, Iron man, X–men and just recently released, Deadpool. But even though these publishers have been successful for almost 10 years, there are still controversies about how women are portrayed/treated in comic books. Firstly, let's go back to the late 1930's, during this time, the most popular superheroes were Superman and Captain Marvel, there were barely any female superheroes during that time. But there were some supporting female characters like Lois Lane, who was Superman's girlfriend, she was once kidnapped by criminals and then saved by Superman. We can see her that women were ... Another problem is how female superheroes are drawn by comic book publishers, they have tiny waists, slim figure and wear skintight costumes. So here are more examples how women are illustrated in comic books: Poison Ivy from Batman series uses toxins from plants to create love potions to catch and seduce Batman and other male characters. Emma Frost also known as White Queen uses her power to control and manipulate men in order to gain power. Both situations caused comic book distributors to take the stories off of the racks consequently leading to a serious decline in sales and popularity. Superheroes have been created within a completely different dimension of our own, thus creating its own form of language and allowing the fans to exist within two dimensions at the same time. The lack of popularity led the books to be uncommon which led to quite a stereotype: only nerds read superhero comics. This stereotype impacted the language used within and about this community. Many superheroes recognizable in mainstream popular culture today originated during this time, becoming favorites of the young and old alike. Unsurprisingly, superheroes usually experience their greatest success during times of transition and uncertainty, such as America moving from economic crisis into armed conflict (Bainbridge 746). While this essay will be focusing on the overall influence of all American Superheroes on society during the 1940s, a specific focus will be placed on two of the most well known created heroes: Superman and Captain America. Both Superman and Captain America first emerged as the nation was coming out of the Great Depression and headed into World War II (Bainbridge 746).
