2. How are men represented in TV drama?
Men are represented in a much more positive
view than women when it comes to TV drama.
They are given a lot more attributions for the
screen. For example, power, strength,
intelligence, attractiveness and independence.
Men are given the role of independence.
Where it is most likely that they don’t need an
ally or anyone's help for that matter. They can
be referred to as ‘the lone ranger’. Its become
very noticeable that over the years, a mans
physique has become more and more
important in order to look good and reach the
standards of todays society. Its harder for men
to live up to the expectations of media.
3. How are women represented in TV
drama?
Feminism has been around for over 30 years in
the media and on television and there has been
an increase in what a women is expected to
look like. For example, beauty, size/physique,
emotional, sexuality and relationships. Women
are often represented as being part of a family,
be it a mother, grandmother, sister or daughter
they are always related back to something
emotional and part of a team. They are also
made to be victimised most of the time instead
of playing the hero, or so the men are called
‘the lone ranger’. However, in todays society
most women’s representations will relate back
to physical beauty.
4. Is it different in sub-genres?
From looking at the difference of genres and how they are represented in TV
dramas, it has helped me come to the realisation that the way that each gender
is represented if put across in the exact same was in sub-genres as well. For
example, in romance films a woman may be represented in a way where she is
looking for a spouse and the male may be represented to be more alone and not
after romance. Whereas in a comedy film you can change up the representations
of gender and have the woman to be the one on her own and more of a heroic
character and the male can be seen to be lonely and the one that needs saving. It
is most likely that an audience would find it funnier if they have the genders and
their representations switched around as it isn’t what you would find normal.
