2. PICKING
Picking is the second primary motion in
weaving. It consists in passing a pick of weft
between the upper and lower lines of a
divided warp. It builds up half of the cloth.
The shuttle is the vehicle of weft for picking
in the conventional and automatic looms.
3. Classification of picking
Shuttle picking
Negative picking positive picking
Over pick mech. Under pick mech. Air jet
Cone over pick mech. (1) Side lever under pick mech. Water jet
(2)Side shaft under pick mech. Projectile
(3)Cone under pick mech.
4. over pick motion
cone over pick mechanism
A- Loom bottom shaft
B - Picking cam
C - Picking cone
D - Picking shaft
E - Picking stick
F - Picking band
G - Picker
5. Under Pick Mechanism
If the fulcrum of the picking stick is below the level of the shuttle box, then the picking
mechanism is known as an under pick mechanism.
The types of under pick mechanism are:-
I. Cone under pick mechanism
2. Side-lever under pick mechanism
3. Side-shaft under pick mechanism.
6. Cone under pick mechanism
A- Picking tappet
B - Bottom shaft
C- Nose
D – Cone
E- Side shaft
F-Lug strap
G -Picking stick
H- Picker
I-Shuttle
J- Spring and pivot
8. Side shaft under pick mechanism
A- Disc
B - Bottom shaft
C - Bowl
D-Shoe
E- Shoe-shaft lever
F- Connecting lever
G - Lug strap
H-Picking stick
I- Picker
J- Spring
K – Shuttle
L – Pivot
9. Loom Timing: -
Normal picking
If the shuttle leaves the shuttle box at 180 degrees (bottom
centre) then the picking is known as normal picking. See
Figure.
2. Early picking
If the shuttle leaves the shuttle box five degrees before
bottom centre then the picking is referred to as early
picking. So the shuttle enters the shed five degrees
earlier.
3. Late picking
If the shuttle leaves the shuttle box five degrees
after bottom centre then the picking is known
as late picking. So the shuttle enters the shed
five degrees later
