1. EMPATHY MAP AND
PROBLEM STATEMENT
School to Work Transition
Venture Labs, Stanford University
2. SAY
• Industrial training period should be extended (1month internship is
not enough)
• There should be opportunities for introverts to develop their
personality.
• In the Current Academic System, technical aspects remain weak.
(What is studied in the first year is forgotten in the 3rd year)
• Recruitment system of companies is not foolproof. More rounds of
interviews must be conducted.
• Soft Skills subjects like english 1 and 2 are not effective.
• Many placed in IT jobs where work is repetitive, no growth for
employee.
• Real time industrial problems should be dealt in class.
• These problems should be taken as projects by students who
should solve them using the knowledge they have gained!!
3. DO
• The stakeholder is struggling with his CGPA for
campus placement.
• Did not meet the required criteria of CGPA
(very less margin)
4. THINK
• 1 month time is less to understand any industry and apply academic
knowledge in the industry. Internship system in India is also laid
back! Interns not given enough opportunities.
• Problem Solving capability not developed properly. Industrial
problems are different.
• Current system of learning and giving exams and forgetting the
concepts do not stimulate the student. Not interesting! People take
it as a burden
• Recruitment system of companies not fool proof since malpractices
are present. GD/PI and contacts with management play an
important role.
• Limited jobs in core sector companies and many students forced to
take IT jobs. No development of individual skill set!! More jobs
needed. Entrepreneurship should be boosted!
5. FEEL
• Students feel incompetent while entering an industry.
• Many students are not able to fit in the group at their work
place since soft skills have not been developed.
• Basics remain weak (lack of teaching quality and no
effective assessment of students)
• Hard working and strong technical people are not able to
enter the company due to lack of social skills, contacts or
merely bad luck.
• Students placed in IT jobs are doomed for life. No growth in
these jobs
• The problems done in class are easy and conventional and
do not match the level of competency required in
industries.
6. Insights
• Current internship System does not prepare the
students for the job properly. They need more time
and opportunities to use their knowledge in the
industry.
• Recruitment System should be improved. More rounds
of interviews and tests should be taken to select
students.
• A way to use academic knowledge on existing industrial
problem will prepare them better.
• A simulated industrial environment should be created
in school where students can actively participate and
solve problems.
7. PROBLEM STATEMENT
• A collaborative, reliable engineering student who
is about to graduate in a year and is struggling to
get a job during the campus placement session,
needs a education system where he can get the
opportunity to enhance his exposure to real work
environment and in the process develop his soft
skills as well in order to be job-ready. This is
because, the current education system of
learning and giving exams do not complement
the skills needed in the industry and thus the
student feels incompetent.
