Blue sapphire gets its color from impurities of iron and titanium in its aluminum oxide crystalline structure. Iron and titanium atoms substitute into the crystal lattice as Fe2+, Fe3+, and Ti4+ ions, which causes a charge transfer process that results in the blue color.
