2. 1.G.M MOSQUITOES TO FIGHT
DENGUE
Caused by: female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes
Scientist have released three million genetically
modified mosquitoes in the Cyaman Island to
fight dengue.
Batches of male mosquitoes were released in a
40 acre of area from may to October, to mate wit
wild female counterparts of the same species, so
they would not be able to produce any progeny.
3. Observation:
By august in that region mosquitoes numbers
dropped by 80% compared with a neighboring
area where no sterile male mosquitoes were
released.
Experiment:
G.M. sterile mosquitoes were created which use
sex to kill off others in there species.
Created by manipulating the insects’ DNA
Larvae are produced but most die before they
hatch and the rest survive only a short time.
4. 2.AQUAMAT
New drug for Malaria Treatment
African Quinine V. Artesunate Malaria
Trial(AQUAMAT)
Artesunate: It is derived from Chinese herb
called Qinghai (Artesmisia annua)
5. Observation:
AQUAMAT found that treatment with artesunate
reduced the number of deaths from severe
malaria by 22.5% compared with quinine.
With artesunate treatment treatment 8.5% of the
patent died, compared to 10.9% with quinine
Children treated with artesunte were also less
likely to slip into deep coma.
6. 3.National Antibiotics Policy

These are getting resistance against antibiotics
due to irrational use of antibiotics and over
precipitation.
7. Govt. task force:
To review the current situation regarding
manufacture, use and misuse of antibiotics in the
country.
To recommend the design for creation of a
National Surveillance system for antibiotic
resistance.
To initiate studies documentating prescription
patterns and establish a monitoring system for
the same
To enforce & enhance regulatory provisions for
use of antibiotics in human, veterinary, industrial
