April 12, 2016 The Importance Physical Activity and its Emphasis in schools Our lives are very
busy with many activities to the point where we neglect our health. Over time the neglect results in
various diseases and illnesses. In order to avoid this from happening, we need to make physical
activity part of our lifestyle from an early age. Physical activity has many benefits while many
young people of the future are still in school. According to the CDC, Center for Disease Control
regular physical activity helps build strong muscles. (CDC) It helps reduce the chance of obesity and
other diseases and helps improve an individual's mood and overall wellbeing (CDC Physical
Activity Facts). Most students get their physical activity through school PE classes. These types of
exercise are done for a short time and not enough for the recommended 30 to 45 minutes for most
students according to the CDC. (CDC) Physical Activity is an essential part of our lives and should
be part of everyone's daily routine.
During my research I found many surprising facts on the benefits of physical activity. According to
the CDC's article "Physical Activity Facts" "Regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence
improves strength and endurance, helps build healthy bones and muscles, helps control weight,
reduces anxiety and stress, increases self–esteem, and may improve blood pressure and cholesterol

Physical Activity Analysis
Through the use of MyFitnessPal I was able to carefully document and analyze my physical activity
for three days. MyfitnessPal has a unique feature with my iPhone that can track my actual steps
taken per day. Unfortunately, I did not have the time during the three days to do any exercise besides
walking around campus and steps obtained from running errands. It is important that I not only
focus on the foods I consume but also exercise my muscles for short and long term health

The Importance Of Physical Activity
The use of pedometers and tracking tools for physical activity has allowed me to measure my energy
expenditure per day though tracking my steps, calculating the duration of physical activity
completed per week and analyzing the intensity and the type of activity I engage in. There are
specific guidelines set out for all age groups to attain the goal of the exercising while increasing the
levels of intensity and decreasing sedentary behaviors'. This reflection will outline tips and tricks to
staying active and reducing sedentary activity. I will identify the facilitators and barriers to
exercising through the analyses of my physical activity log while highlighting the strengths and

epidemiology. Physical Activity is defined as any bodily movement a person makes that is produced
by skeletal muscle and requires some sort of energy disbursement. This is vastly different when

The Importance Of Physical Activities
Research has shown that healthy habits established early in life, such as a balanced diet and
participating in regular physical activity, may continue into adolescence and adulthood, thereby
reducing a person's risk of developing conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. This report
investigates the students at Ferny Grove State High School meet the guidelines recommended by the
Australian Government. I achieved this by conducting a survey of ten people in my class, and the
data suggests that the majority of the people who participated in the survey didn't meet the
guidelines. After evaluating the data, I recommended that the students should less time doing
sedentary activities, and more time doing physical activities.
This report will investigate whether the students at Ferny Grove State High School are meeting the
guidelines recommended by the Australia's physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines for
young people aged 13–17 years. A survey will be conducted, then the data will be evaluated and
compared to guidelines to see if the students are getting enough physical exercise.
Recommendations will then be made on how the students can stay fit and healthy. This report will
also cover the importance of physical activity for adolescences, the need for intervention to increase
physical activities levels in Australia and national health strategies that aim to improve physical
activity in Australia.

Physical Activity Into My Life
For Project YOU, I decided this was an appropriate chance to affectively incorporate some physical
activity into my life. As a Nutritional Sciences student, I tend to eat a relatively healthy diet rich in
fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. As former dancer and athlete, I enjoy exercise, but I seldom
"have time" to make exercising a priority. Recently, I had experienced weight basis in March from
my own doctor at a gynecology appointment. When I responded with, "I'm focused on dealing with
my alcoholism right now", he still questioned my health status from my gradual increase in weight
over the years. Back in January, I initially tried to incorporate physical activity into my daily routine
again and rejoined a gym that is a block away from my house. I wanted to take my own advice and
just go and walk for 20 minutes most days of the week. I wasn't aiming for anything crazy, just to go
and get some exercise, because some is better than none. I didn't actually go to the gym in January
or February, but I had a membership and it was on my mind, so that was an improvement.
I have been battling my inner voice telling me "you're fat" since I was in high school, dancing 3–4

At the end of the study during follow up body weight was reduced by average 23.8kg, visceral fat
area and fat mass were reduced by 30.8%, while only a slight reduction in fat free mass being 10%

Sleep can also be looked at to help the fight against obesity. Studies have shown that on short nights
of sleep people consume more calories and most of the increase is calories from fat (St–Onge 2011).
This study looked at people with a BMI of 22–26 on a short night's sleep (4 hours), and a normal
night's sleep (9 hours). The level of activity in people on short versus long nights of sleep was not
significantly different, however their increased caloric intake was ~300 on short nights of sleep,
most of which were snacks (St–Onge 2011).

Our third week of the physical activity intervention has been the most successful so far out of the
first two weeks. My group members and I were able to obtain much more data on student's height
and weight in the third week due to class rosters that were given to us by Ms. Moser to easily find
and organize students in their physical activity class. My group members and I are doing well in our

Over time the neglect results in various diseases and illnesses. In order to avoid this from happening, we need to make physical activity part of our lifestyle from an early age. Physical activity has many benefits while many young people of the future are still in school. According to the CDC, Center for Disease Control regular physical activity helps build strong muscles.
