2. Water consumption
Many uses of water include agricultural, industrial and
household activities. In developed countries, most of the
available water is used in industry, in contrast to developing
ones, where the vast majority of water is used for agricultural
purposes
3. Domestic use

Industrial purposes
The bar graph on
the right shows that
in Greece water is
consumed for the
following purposes:
15% for domestic
use
82% for
agricultural
activities
3% for industrial
purposes

5. Domestic use of water
5-20% of water which is daily consumed is used by households.
40% of drinking water is flushed in the toilet. The rest of it is used as
follows: 25% is used for shower or bath, 20% for washing clothes and
dishes, 10% in the kitchen and 5% for cleaning.
Since 1997 there has been a constant increase in water consumption
by 5-8% annually.
6. Domestic use of water
Usage Litres
Flushing a toilet 9
Full bathtub 150
Shower 15/ minute
Washing hands and face 30/ 2 minutes
Washing machine 150
Dishwasher 50
Washing fruit and vegetables 15/ minute
Washing dishes by hand 150/ day
Washing the car 150
7. Water consumption on Greek
islands
A person needs to use 50 liters of water daily in order to satisfy personal
and domestic needs. In developed countries we may use up to 500 liters.
Water consumption on Greek islands has dramatically changed because of
tourism. According to the findings of a research carried out by National
Technical University of Athens, twenty Aegean islands are expected to face
increase in water deficits by 25-40% in the next years.
8. Desalination of Seawater on Greek
islands
The installation and operation of
desalination units on many "dry" Aegean
islands has resulted in stopping water
transportation to many islands by ship.
The number of islands with insufficient
natural resources has risen along with
tourism growth, pushing demand up
every year. If this demand is not
effectively addressed, it can endanger
both the summer tourist season and the
operation of critical infrastructure
(hospitals, etc.)
10. Addressing water conservation in
Greece
Municipal Enterprise for Water Supply and Sewerage informs citizens about
water saving methods through its official website and mass media.
Projects are carried out at schools in order to raise awareness around the
importance of water conservation and teach students how to use water wisely.
11. Ways to Conserve Water(1)
Improvement of water supply networks and replacement of existing
complex pipeline networks or various materials with visible signs of aging.
Network losses are estimated at 20% for networks up to 35 years of age
and 40% for older networks.
12. Ways to Conserve Water(2)
Dams - Water Reservoirs
Nowadays, a large proportion (25% - 50%) of the surface runoff of each continent is
restrained by dams and artificial reservoirs. In Greece, the construction of the first
dams began after 1950 in rivers Axios, Aliakmonas and Acheloos.
13. Ways to Conserve Water (3)
Collecting rain water can contribute to saving water.

14. Ways to Conserve Water (3)
Reuse of treated waste water
Outflows from urban waste water
treatment plants are a significant water
resource that can be used, after
appropriate treatment, in many different
uses (mainly not drinkable).
-Agricultural
-Urban
-Industrial
-Recreational/ Environmental use
15. Reuse of treated waste water
The final product is carried to reservoirs and distributed to
agriculture for irrigation.
