Sherda is a small village with a population
of approx.6000 people located on the
Haryana-Rajasthan border, approximately
30km from Hissar. It is situated in an area
which gets very scanty rainfall and is
susceptible to periods of drought.
Over the last few years, due to severe
drought conditions, the villagers were
forced to abandon the milch animals as
they did not have the means to sustain
them. The animals were left in the
protection of the village gaushala. These
animals hold an extremely sentimental and
emotional space in the psyche of villagers
and it is only due to extreme conditions that
they are forced to abandon. The
sentimental attachment to these milch
animals can be gauged from the fact that
the village panchayat has donated a land
measuring 18 acres valued at over 10 crores
to the Gaushala Samiti for upkeep of these
abandoned animals.
The villagers are very desirous of
constructing a permanent shed so that
these milch animals can be tended to and

taken care of. Other than the emotional
attachment with these animals, they
also help maintain the overall
ecosystems of the area as the dung is
used by the farmers for fertilizer of the
limited farming activities in the region.
In addition, the milk from the cows helps
to sustain the livelihood of a number of
families.
Rotary Club of Delhi Millennium have
undertaken the project of helping with
the overall development of this village.
In the first stage, we propose to
construct a gaushala measuring 7000
sq.feet for the upkeep of these animals.
In second stage, the club proposes to
construct a gobar gas plant which will
help to generate clean energy and
sustain the activities of the gaushala on
a regular basis.
‘Dal Baati’Lunch at Rtn Hemant Sr’s Residence
A nice sunny sunday lunch on a winter
afternoon at Rtn.Hemant Jain and R’Anne
Alka’s residence at Gurgaon, where we
were treated to mouth watering
traditional Rajasthani delights, aka Dal-
Baati-Churma! Now we know why
Hemant’s house is called a ‘watering
whole’ even without alcohol.
