Recreation and Family center proposal 2
Introductory Paragraph: My recreation and family center is
known as all round recreation and
family center. It is an ideal recreational center designed to meet
the needs of all childhood stages
right from the infancy stage, toddler stage, early childhood
stage, middle or late childhood stage
and the adolescent stage. The recreational center offers
activities which are aimed at developing
the cognitive, physical and psychosocial needs of the children. I
therefore request for your
consideration in giving me the opportunity to offer recreational
facilities for children in the
growth stages listed above. The main goal for each of the
activities included in the proposal is to
ensure that the cognitive, psychosocial and physical needs of
the children in the infancy, toddler,
early childhood, middle and adolescent stages are addressed.
ROOM #1 – Infant Room
Infancy is the age between the time a child is born and one year
(Bastable, 2007). This activity
will be aimed at enhancing the cognitive and psychosocial needs
of the child. The first scheduled
activity involves watching movies with a lot of animation. The
use of this activity would be
important as it will enhance language skills of the child, as it
has been shown that they develop
in a very high rate at this stage (Bastable, 2007). The activity
enhances the cognitive and
psychosocial needs of the child by teaching them how to talk
and listen. It is important for
parents not to be highly anxious if their child falls sick at this
stage as this would result to the
infant being anxious as well the use of this activity would be
important as it will enhance
language skills of the child (Bastable, 2007).
Recreation and Family center proposal 3
The second activity will be role play so as to teach the child on
how to behave and feelings
thereof (Bastable, 2007). This can be done through the use of
items such as teddy bears so as to
assist a child in anticipating the outcome of the experience
(Bastable, 2007). This activity is
important because it enables a child to bond with a parent or the
care giver as research has shown
that it is at this stage that children tend to develop trust or
mistrust (Erickson, 1963). The activity
enhances the socioemotional development through the
enhancement of the value of trust or
mistrust that the child develops while interacting with the care
giver during the activity
(Erickson, 1963). The cognitive needs of the child are also met
as the child can recognize what
feeling to expect after a certain happening (Bastable, 2007). In
enhancing parenting, parents
should use this activity so as to teach and understand the
response of their children to certain
stimuli (Bastable, 2007).
One specific item in the room is a teddy bear. The teddy bear
will be useful as a caregiver or
parent may use it to teach a child to anticipate the outcome of
an experience and as such it is
important for the city council to buy teddy bears for the infant
room (Bastable, 2007). The teddy
bears can be purchased from
http://www.teddybeartreasures.com.au/baby-safe-teddy-bears-to
ys
ROOM #2 – Toddler Room
Toddler stage is the age between one year and three years
(Bastable, 2007). At this stage, the
child tends to depend on the environment, is naturally curious
and also needs security (Bastable,
2007). One activity that will be used here is a class involving
games and models for instance to
enable the child to learn about the world (Bastable, 2007). As
stated earlier children at this stage
are naturally curious and the class will therefore come in handy
to help them discover their

toys

environment and thus enhancing their cognitive needs. Ata this
age focus should not be paid so
much on illness as this would lead to the child to become
anxious (Bastable, 2007). If sick and
hospitalized the hospital room should be decorated as much as
the child’s room to avoid them
being anxious and feeling as if they are being punished due to
immobility associated with
sickness (Bastable, 2007).
The second activity will involve at exploration by way of
drawing, painting and sculpting. This
activity is important as it enhances the creativity of a child thus
enhancing its cognitive needs
(Bastable, 2007). The activity will also enhance the physical
need as it will enable the child
move up and about while drawing thus exercising. During this
activities parents will be
encourage to set an example as a role model to the child by
sharing their belief through art and
thus promoting healthy behavior in the child as well as
enhancing the child’s development of
behavior (Bastable, 2007).
One item in the toddler room would be an art kit. This would be
important as it would enhance
the child’s creativity and development of their own system of
beliefs as seen earlier. The art
toolkit for toddlers can be purchased at

sp.
ROOM #3 – Early Childhood Room
Early childhood stage ranges between three to five years of age
(Bastable, 2007). This stage is
also referred to as the preoperational period (Piaget, 1951). The
child is still unable to think

supplies.jsp

things through in a logical manner without having to act and is
also a stage where they start using
symbols and numbers (Santrok, 2006). One activity at this stage
will involve a class exploration
of the alphabet and numbers. The tools to be used for learning
will also include colors, songs,
games and art. This activity will enhance cognitive and
socioemotional needs through the
incorporation of ability to identify numbers and letters of the
alphabet. The songs will enhance
the language skill of the toddler (Bastable, 2007).
The second class will involve a story book reading session. The
variety of storybook will range
from those emphasizing the compassion of health care givers to
those that show the relationship
between the child and parents or care givers (Bastable, 2007).
This activity will enhance the
cognitive and socioemotional development needs as it will
enable the child bond with the parents
and caregiver through information passed on the importance of
the relationship with them. Care
givers should use the time that is dedicated to establish their
relationship with children to teach
parents about health issues and disease prevention measures (Ba
stable, 2007).
One specific item in the room will be colorful storybooks.
These storybooks are important for the
city council to purchase for the room as they will help them
recognize symbols and numbers
contained in the story books (Bastable, 2007). Story books for
early childhood can be purchased
at

ROOM #4 – Middle/Late Childhood Room
Middle or late childhood ranges from between six to eleven
years of age (Bastable, 2007).at this
stage children are well developed in their physical, cognitive
and psychosocial skills and can

well be enrolled in structured formal education (Bastable,
2007). An activity at this stage will
include a simple ballet dance class. This class will be important
to the children as it will enhance
their physical need by way of exercise through dance (Bastable,
2007). It will also enhance the
psychosocial needs and cognitive needs through music and
dance. At this stage it also important
to teach the child on how to be responsible for their own health
and this can be done through the
incorporation of health lessons in their dance music (Bastable, 2
007).
The second activity will be simple computer lesson classes.
This class is important as it will add
to the diversity of ways of learning to the child at this stage.
Lessons can be put in the computer
programs in a bid to stimulate their thinking. In terms of health
lessons concerning their health
and how to be responsible for it can also be included in the com
puter programs (Bastable, 2007).
One specific item for the room will include computers
programmed to fit the needs of this age
group. It is important to have the computers as they will highly
add to the acquisition of
knowledge on different issues for children of this particular age
group. Such computers can be
purchased

ROOM #5 – Adolescence Room
The stage ranges from 12 years to 19 years of age. It is the stage
that involves the transition from
childhood to adulthood (Bastable, 2007). The stage is also
known as the stage of formal
operations (Piaget, 1951). One activity to be used for this age
group is face- to – face computer
group discussion. This activity will be important to the
cognitive needs of adolescents as it
promotes methods of emphasizing values and enhances problem
solving (Bastable, 2007). The
Recreation and Family center proposal 7
activity will also create the feeling of belonging as it will
involve each adolescent through taking
part in the activity (Bastable, 2007). Lessons on health issues
affecting adolescents such as
anorexia and diabetes due to either consumption of junk or lack
of eating so as to maintain body
shape can be included in the computer program (Bastable, 2007)
.
The other activity that will be incorporated for this particular
age group is swimming lessons.
This activity is important as it will meet the physical need of
adolescents through physical
exercise that comes about as a result of swimming. This activity
will also enhance the
psychosocial needs of the teenagers as it will enhance the strong
need for belonging to a group
friendship or peer acceptance and support that is a common
characteristic of adolescents
(Bastable, 2007). This activity can also be used to enhance
health education by teaching the need
for exercise as to stay healthy (Bastable, 2007).
One specific item in the room can vary from instructional tools
for instance complex diagrams,
models and detailed reading materials (Bastable, 2007). Models
can be of the human body
describing all the functions of different body parts and diseases.
This model is important as it
will enable the adolescents learn about health issues and how to
take care of their health. Such a
model can be purchased from
www.hometrainingtools.com/life-science-biology/humanbody.
Conclusion:
From the foregoing it is clear that my recreation family center is
an all rounded recreation center
just as the name suggests. Given an opportunity to offer the
foregoing activities and much more

that has been left out, I will strive to make sure that the
cognitive, psychosocial and physical
needs of children are met throughout their various stages of
growth. I would therefore take this
opportunity to thank the city council for their consideration of
my proposal and look forward to
working with them in enhancing the cognitive, psychosocial and
physical needs of children.

Running Head Recreation and Family Center Proposal           .docx

  • 1. Running Head: Recreation and Family Center Proposal 1 PSY104 WRITTEN PROPOSAL Enter Title of paper Enter Date submitted
  • 2. Recreation and Family center proposal 2 Introductory Paragraph: My recreation and family center is known as all round recreation and family center. It is an ideal recreational center designed to meet the needs of all childhood stages right from the infancy stage, toddler stage, early childhood stage, middle or late childhood stage and the adolescent stage. The recreational center offers activities which are aimed at developing the cognitive, physical and psychosocial needs of the children. I therefore request for your consideration in giving me the opportunity to offer recreational facilities for children in the growth stages listed above. The main goal for each of the activities included in the proposal is to ensure that the cognitive, psychosocial and physical needs of the children in the infancy, toddler, early childhood, middle and adolescent stages are addressed. ROOM #1 – Infant Room Infancy is the age between the time a child is born and one year (Bastable, 2007). This activity
  • 3. will be aimed at enhancing the cognitive and psychosocial needs of the child. The first scheduled activity involves watching movies with a lot of animation. The use of this activity would be important as it will enhance language skills of the child, as it has been shown that they develop in a very high rate at this stage (Bastable, 2007). The activity enhances the cognitive and psychosocial needs of the child by teaching them how to talk and listen. It is important for parents not to be highly anxious if their child falls sick at this stage as this would result to the infant being anxious as well the use of this activity would be important as it will enhance language skills of the child (Bastable, 2007). Recreation and Family center proposal 3 The second activity will be role play so as to teach the child on how to behave and feelings thereof (Bastable, 2007). This can be done through the use of items such as teddy bears so as to
  • 4. assist a child in anticipating the outcome of the experience (Bastable, 2007). This activity is important because it enables a child to bond with a parent or the care giver as research has shown that it is at this stage that children tend to develop trust or mistrust (Erickson, 1963). The activity enhances the socioemotional development through the enhancement of the value of trust or mistrust that the child develops while interacting with the care giver during the activity (Erickson, 1963). The cognitive needs of the child are also met as the child can recognize what feeling to expect after a certain happening (Bastable, 2007). In enhancing parenting, parents should use this activity so as to teach and understand the response of their children to certain stimuli (Bastable, 2007). One specific item in the room is a teddy bear. The teddy bear will be useful as a caregiver or parent may use it to teach a child to anticipate the outcome of an experience and as such it is important for the city council to buy teddy bears for the infant room (Bastable, 2007). The teddy

At this stage, the child tends to depend on the environment, is naturally curious and also needs security (Bastable, 2007). One activity that will be used here is a class involving games and models for instance to enable the child to learn about the world (Bastable, 2007). As stated earlier children at this stage are naturally curious and the class will therefore come in handy to help them discover their http://www.teddybeartreasures.com.au/baby-safe-teddy-bears- toys http://www.teddybeartreasures.com.au/baby-safe-teddy-bears- toys Recreation and Family center proposal 4 environment and thus enhancing their cognitive needs. Ata this age focus should not be paid so much on illness as this would lead to the child to become anxious (Bastable, 2007). If sick and
  • 6. hospitalized the hospital room should be decorated as much as the child’s room to avoid them being anxious and feeling as if they are being punished due to immobility associated with sickness (Bastable, 2007). The second activity will involve at exploration by way of drawing, painting and sculpting. This activity is important as it enhances the creativity of a child thus enhancing its cognitive needs (Bastable, 2007). The activity will also enhance the physical need as it will enable the child move up and about while drawing thus exercising. During this activities parents will be encourage to set an example as a role model to the child by sharing their belief through art and thus promoting healthy behavior in the child as well as enhancing the child’s development of behavior (Bastable, 2007). One item in the toddler room would be an art kit. This would be important as it would enhance the child’s creativity and development of their own system of beliefs as seen earlier. The art

ROOM #3 – Early Childhood Room Early childhood stage ranges between three to five years of age (Bastable, 2007). This stage is also referred to as the preoperational period (Piaget, 1951). The child is still unable to think http://www.toysrus.com/products/kids-arts-and-crafts- supplies.jsp Recreation and Family center proposal 5 things through in a logical manner without having to act and is also a stage where they start using symbols and numbers (Santrok, 2006). One activity at this stage will involve a class exploration of the alphabet and numbers. The tools to be used for learning will also include colors, songs, games and art. This activity will enhance cognitive and socioemotional needs through the incorporation of ability to identify numbers and letters of the alphabet. The songs will enhance
  • 8. the language skill of the toddler (Bastable, 2007). The second class will involve a story book reading session. The variety of storybook will range from those emphasizing the compassion of health care givers to those that show the relationship between the child and parents or care givers (Bastable, 2007). This activity will enhance the cognitive and socioemotional development needs as it will enable the child bond with the parents and caregiver through information passed on the importance of the relationship with them. Care givers should use the time that is dedicated to establish their relationship with children to teach parents about health issues and disease prevention measures (Ba stable, 2007). One specific item in the room will be colorful storybooks. These storybooks are important for the city council to purchase for the room as they will help them recognize symbols and numbers contained in the story books (Bastable, 2007). Story books for early childhood can be purchased at www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=n:283155,k:Earlychi ldhoodeducation
  • 9. ROOM #4 – Middle/Late Childhood Room Middle or late childhood ranges from between six to eleven years of age (Bastable, 2007).at this stage children are well developed in their physical, cognitive and psychosocial skills and can http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=n:283155,k:E arlychildhoodeducation http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=n:283155,k:E arlychildhoodeducation http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=n:283155,k:E arlychildhoodeducation Recreation and Family center proposal 6 well be enrolled in structured formal education (Bastable, 2007). An activity at this stage will include a simple ballet dance class. This class will be important to the children as it will enhance their physical need by way of exercise through dance (Bastable, 2007). It will also enhance the psychosocial needs and cognitive needs through music and dance. At this stage it also important to teach the child on how to be responsible for their own health and this can be done through the
  • 10. incorporation of health lessons in their dance music (Bastable, 2 007). The second activity will be simple computer lesson classes. This class is important as it will add to the diversity of ways of learning to the child at this stage. Lessons can be put in the computer programs in a bid to stimulate their thinking. In terms of health lessons concerning their health and how to be responsible for it can also be included in the com puter programs (Bastable, 2007). One specific item for the room will include computers programmed to fit the needs of this age group. It is important to have the computers as they will highly add to the acquisition of knowledge on different issues for children of this particular age group. Such computers can be purchased fromhttp://www.zapmeta.ws/ws?q=child%20laptop%20computer s&asid=ws_gc3_09&mt=b&n w=s&de cap=1t1 ROOM #5 – Adolescence Room The stage ranges from 12 years to 19 years of age. It is the stage that involves the transition from
  • 11. childhood to adulthood (Bastable, 2007). The stage is also known as the stage of formal operations (Piaget, 1951). One activity to be used for this age group is face- to – face computer group discussion. This activity will be important to the cognitive needs of adolescents as it promotes methods of emphasizing values and enhances problem solving (Bastable, 2007). The Recreation and Family center proposal 7 activity will also create the feeling of belonging as it will involve each adolescent through taking part in the activity (Bastable, 2007). Lessons on health issues affecting adolescents such as anorexia and diabetes due to either consumption of junk or lack of eating so as to maintain body shape can be included in the computer program (Bastable, 2007) . The other activity that will be incorporated for this particular age group is swimming lessons. This activity is important as it will meet the physical need of adolescents through physical
  • 12. exercise that comes about as a result of swimming. This activity will also enhance the psychosocial needs of the teenagers as it will enhance the strong need for belonging to a group friendship or peer acceptance and support that is a common characteristic of adolescents (Bastable, 2007). This activity can also be used to enhance health education by teaching the need for exercise as to stay healthy (Bastable, 2007). One specific item in the room can vary from instructional tools for instance complex diagrams, models and detailed reading materials (Bastable, 2007). Models can be of the human body describing all the functions of different body parts and diseases. This model is important as it will enable the adolescents learn about health issues and how to take care of their health. Such a model can be purchased from www.hometrainingtools.com/life-science-biology/humanbody. Conclusion: From the foregoing it is clear that my recreation family center is an all rounded recreation center
  • 13. just as the name suggests. Given an opportunity to offer the foregoing activities and much more http://www.hometrainingtools.com/life-science- biology/humanbody Recreation and Family center proposal 8 that has been left out, I will strive to make sure that the cognitive, psychosocial and physical needs of children are met throughout their various stages of growth. I would therefore take this opportunity to thank the city council for their consideration of my proposal and look forward to working with them in enhancing the cognitive, psychosocial and physical needs of children.
