Africa Research In Sustainable Intensification for the Next
Generation (Africa RISING)
3. o Funded by USAID BFS through the FtF initiatives;
o Duration: 2012- Sept 2016 (Phase I) and Oct 2016-
2021 (Phase II).
To provide pathways out of hunger and poverty for
smallholder families through sustainably intensified
farming systems that sufficiently improve food, nutrition,
and income security, particularly for women and children,
and conserve or enhance the natural resource base.
Programme Purpose
4. Africa RISING Project Sites in the Ethiopian Highlands?
Phase I: 2012 to 30 Sept 2016
6. 1. Livestock , feed and forage management
2. Improved crop varieties and management
practices
3. Horticulture – fruits and vegetables
4. Natural resource management
5. Synergies, trade-offs and systems integration
Cross-cutting themes – nutrition, markets and value
chains, gender equity, human and institutional
capacity development.
Thematic Areas
Priority issues addressed through more than 17 action
oriented research interventions.
7. • Systematic site selection within the target geographies:
market access, pop’n densities, agro-ecologies
• Diagnostic analyses: identification of constraints,
opportunities and interventions at household, community
and landscape scales
• Participatory action research to adapt and validate SI
trajectories
• Facilitating dissemination and scaling-development
partnership-capacity building/ Innovation platforms
Africa RISING Action and Backstopping Research
Approach
8. Steps Followed to Establish Development
Partnership for Scaling
Packed information/evidences on validated innovations
(fact sheets, reports)
Identified potential scaling development partners
Created awareness on validated innovations (face to
face meetings and discussions, workshops, IPs)
Compiled engagements/ interests of development
partners in scaling- templates (which innovation/s,
where, how many hhs and when?)
Built capacities (ToT on innovations) and provided
limited amount of starter seeds/ germplasm)
9. o Preliminary targets: 0.7 million direct beneficiary hhs with the
potential to scale to a further 3.4 million hhs.
