The rise of mental illness is upon us, but this is nothing new. We have become exposed to different
illnesses in the media, particularly films. No one bats an eye at the validity of a teenager being
diagnosed with brain cancer, but people refuse to accept their family member having a mental
disorder. Popular culture tends to associate persons with mental disorders as "crazy" and
"dangerous", and we accept these characteristics and do not question them. This becomes dangerous
when judges or jurors in a courtroom also begin to adopt this ideology. In "The Myth of Mental
Illness in the Movies and Its Impact on Forensic Psychology", L.E.A. Walker et al. observe how the
adverse portrayals of psychological disorders in films negatively influence public perceptions
toward the mentally ill and, as a result, effect the outcome of court cases. I agree with Walker et al.'s
point about the roles in these movies being so powerful that people generalize all sufferers of
psychological illness into the same category and it is the duty of psychologists to normalize people's
views. I believe Walker et al.'s writing helps bring to light the stigma associated with psychological
illnesses and how our duty is to help set the record straight. First, this paper will evaluate Walker et
al.'s examples of characters in films and incorporate additional examples of negative representation.

It appears that Andrew's disorder was definitely caused by a horrific precipitating event– his wife's
murder of their children and then his subsequent murder of his wife. Once we see, at the end of the
movie, that this occurred and Andrew is not really the U.S. Marshal named Teddy that he was
portraying, we see that he has been deluding himself for years. The DSM–IV–TR also mentions that
"the disorder may be chronic, although a waxing and waning of the preoccupation with delusional
beliefs often occurs." It also states that "full periods of remission may be followed by subsequent
relapses." At the end of the movie, Andrew is shown acknowledging the harsh reality that his
delusions have been masking. However, he quickly relapses the next day as we see when he calls
Dr. Sheehan by the name of Chuck. It is apparent that reality is too much for Andrew to handle. A

seem more harmful and long–term. First, many people who are sleep deprived for an extended

to react to an emotional situation in a more violent manor. Most importantly, when one's mental state
is damaged, flashbacks and distorted memories are common. Many people who suffer from
psychological problems are often troubles with insomnia as a side effect because sleep requires a

Shutter Island portrays multiple mental illnesses in the main character as well as in supporting
characters. One might call it an abnormal psychology "goldmine." It takes place at a water–bound
psychiatric facility, Shutter Island, housing the criminally insane. The plot is about a man who refers
to himself as Teddy. He believes he and his partner are detectives, on the island, to investigate the
disappearance of a patient. He is also in search of a patient named Andrew Laeddis, who Teddy
believes murdered his wife. The detective becomes paranoid that the facility is treating the patients
unfairly and performing experimental lobotomies. The delusion goes on for several months, Teddy
never realizing he is actually a patient, until he is brought back to reality at the climax of the movie.
His delusion ends. He realizes he's a patient for a very short amount of time before he goes back to

A Beautiful Mind Depicts the story of mathematical genius John Nash, and his battle with
schizophrenia. When the audience is first introduced to Nash he is working to make a great
discovery while attending graduate school. From the beginning, it is clear that Nash puts excessive
pressure on himself to achieve this goal. Of course, his hard work eventually lead him to attain his
objectives, but the stressful environment it created likely also triggered his schizophrenic tendencies.
Although at the time of their meeting the audience is unaware, John's Princeton roommate Charles
turns out to be his initial hallucination. Later, when Nash is teaching at MIT a second hallucination
appears in the form of a department of defense agent named William Parcher. Parcher seeks Nash
out based on his skill in code braking, for a special assignment regarding their soviet enemies. The
hallucinations reach a climax when Nash believes he and Parcher are being chased by Russians who

Shutter Island, a psychological thriller, directed by Martin Scorsese incorporates techniques
throughout the film to reveal the truth in Shutter Island. The film is based on a missing patient
investigation, but the truth shows it is a psychological experiment on Andrew to bring him back to
sanity. By analysing certain scenes, including the opening scene, Teddy and Chuck are addressing
Dr Cawley, and whist Teddy and Chuck are interviewing the patients. These three scenes assist in
displaying Shutter Island through film techniques such as camera angle and mise en scene.
The opening scene uses camera angle techniques and symbolism to expose that Teddy is a prisoner
on Shutter Island. A medium shot of Teddy violently throwing up in the bathroom is followed by a
close up shot to observe Teddy at the window saying, 'that's a lot of water.' The audience can see that
Teddy is scared of the water. Water symbolises the truth and is continuously exposed throughout the
film. When the real facts are shown, the viewer Andrew Laediss is said to not be able to live with his

became possible, people have been producing movies with a character that has some sort of

It is often easier to support the alternative realities created by the mentally weak. Due to their mental
state, disregarding what they believe to be true can carry several consequences. In 'Death of a
Salesman', Willy's wife Linda remains supportive throughout her husband's delusion. He claims she
is his "foundation (and) support", which is simply conforming to the expected role of a 1950's
housewife. Another example includes the 2010 movie directed by Martin Scrosese titled 'Shutter
Island', which clearly highlights the importance of accepting the alternative realities created by the
mentally weak. The film's protagonist Teddy Daniels believes himself to be a U.S marshal assigned
to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island mental institution.
However, in true fact, Teddy is actually Andrew Laeddis, one of the institution's most dangerous

Comparing Dennis Lehane 's "Shutter Island" and Martin Scorcese 's adaptation is like comparing a
one punch knockout to a 10 round fight. Lehane 's 10 round fights keeps throwing these punches
and kicks which gives you details and time to think about what is happening, but Scorcese quickly
knocks you out, which is a complete surprise. Lehane gave the characters and the plot too much
detail while failing to pose the right question at the end. Just like a ten round fight, it fails to have
that strong punch and leave a lasting impact; both of which are important in a psychological thriller.
Shutter Island is a psychological thriller that is based on schizophrenia, a mental disorder that leads
to confusion, hallucinations and false beliefs. So for the audience to truly appreciate the book or the
movie, they have to feel confused and fail to realize what is real. Scorcese manages to create this
mood throughout his movie, but it is most apparent during Teddy 's dream scenes. In the first dream
scene Teddy is with his wife Dolores, inside a house. They are having a good time and it is bright
outside, then Dolores walks away slowly and says, "You have to let me go." It starts raining leafs
inside the house, it gets dark outside and when Teddy goes to hug Dolores she starts bleeding from
her stomach, all the while the music in the background feels like it can belong in a wedding and in a

Lost Along the Way Hundreds upon hundreds of films release each year, but when there is a picture
where the film itself is just as much a mystery as the characters involved, that is something that will
get me hooked from beginning to end. The movie Shutter Island is one such film that is just that,
and the characters in question are one Teddy Daniels, and the remote and ghost–like Andrew
Laeddiss. They are two different characters, but one and the same mysterious person, struggling to
find his way. Having gone through some traumatic events in his life, he ended up developing mental
illnesses, such as Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Delusional Disorder. Dealing with
multiple illnesses is something that is very hard to live with and near impossible to recover from,
especially with the life he has lived. The most telling of the two major psychological disorders
would be the Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder. According to (Gabriella, 2012), "The DSM–IV–TR
says in order for someone to be diagnosed with Delusional Disorder, they must (1) have "non–
bizarre delusions," (2) not have schizophrenia, (3) be able to function normally with relatively
normal behaviors, (4) have short, if any, mood episodes, and (5) not be taking any substance which

In the movie "Shutter Island", directed by Martin Scorcese, Teddy Daniels is an U.S. marshal and
war veteran who seems to be left very distraught when his wife, Dolores, was killed in an apartment
fire caused by Andrew Laeddis. The viewer can also see the trauma of when he liberated a
concentration camp during WWII because of his reoccurring dreams of both his experience at the
camp and his wife. When the viewer first sees Teddy it is 1954 and he and his new partner, Chuck,
are on a ferry headed to Shutter Island, which is home to Ashecliffe Hospital for the insane, to
investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando. Rachel was brought to the hospital after drowning
her three young children and living in the delusion that her children never died. Teddy's purpose for
taking this assignment is because he believes that Andrew Laeddis is a patient at Ashecliffe.
In Teddy's investigation of Rachel's disappearance, Teddy becomes very paranoid due to the fact that
he thinks everyone is hiding the truth and that there are Nazi experiments going on in the secluded
lighthouse that is surrounded by guards. He becomes very determined to uncover the truth. As this
process goes on Teddy's dreams intensify and he starts to hallucinate his wife and a child, who he
believes is one of Rachel's children that she murdered. The girl asks him why he couldn't save her
both at the concentration camp and when she comes back to life, in a dream, when Rachel asks

movie takes place at Ashecliffe Hospital a mental institution on Shutter Island for the criminally
insane. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main character, Teddy Daniels or Andrew Laeddis. During the
movie you will see both sides of Teddy Daniels and Andrew Laeddis. 1954 is the year shown in the
movie, when Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck arrive at Shutter Island. These two U.S. marshals
go to the island in order to investigate a missing patient, when suddenly the movie takes an
unexpected turn as psychological illnesses such as Delusional Disorder and Dissociative Identity

This is a film analysis of Shutter Island. Shutter Island is a 2010 film directed by Martin Scorsese.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, this film is 138 minutes of psychological thrills and
horror. Shutter Island covers the field of psychopathology. More specifically, it covers psychotic
disorders, dissociative disorders, and treatment. Shutter Island is set in 1954 on Shutter Island,
Massachusetts at the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane. The opening scene of the film is
U.S. Marshals Edward Daniels and Chuck Aule arriving on Shutter Island. Daniels and Aule, played
