Abstract
In the present world to face enormous challenges of technical world, engineering is a
stepping-stone to the technological concern.
Summer training after VI semester is an integral part of B.E curriculum, which gives the
overview of the corporate world & gets as a link in between the theoretical input and
practical application. To get a concrete knowledge of engineering and new technologies
there is a provision of summer training.
An industry is like an organism, its health depends upon well being of all its parts like
Man, Machine, Material, capital, etc.
In order to achieve practical experience we took training in a professionally managed
and well known organization RAJASTHAN ELECTRONICS AND INSTRUMENTS
LTD. which is engaged in manufacturing many types of products like “Electronics Milk
Tester”, “photo voltaic Cell”, “Programmable Data Terminal Systems”.
In the training period we completed our project on E-CANTEEN.
E-CANTEEN is used at canteen or the location - where a sale transaction takes place.
More specifically, E-canteenoften refers to the hardware and software used for
checkouts -- the equivalent of an electronic cash register. E-canteen systems are used in
restaurants, hotels, stadiums, and casinos, as well as almost any type of retail
establishment
This project comprise the use of PDT or Programmable Data Terminal.
In the end, I am confident that this training report will give exhaustive and up to date
information with regard to the training process in REIL, Jaipur.

CURRENT SYSTEMS:-
In the present scenario, in the era of globalization a large number of canteens and saras
parlours (outlets) are required to have a hangout place in colleges and visiting places,
which may be helpful in handling not only their larger variety of items on sale, but
also can keep an eye on timely updation of their stocks.
On the contrary, if we look at smaller general shops, the management of sales and
stock is still carried manually. The reason behind this is the inability to invest large
capital amount in sales system setup. Resultantly, the bills are still produced
manually on these stores, which require lots of time and efforts. This method
increases the chances of error manifold. A large amount of time is also consumed
in making the manual databases of the sales and also it is difficult to store these
databases.
PROPOSED SOLUTION:-
To overcome the problem of manual bills and to nullify the errors, a handheld
computer device can be used by small general stores. This device is small in size,
has built-in printer unit and memory. The unit can operate for eight hours after
full charging of its rechargeable battery. It is a mobile unit, which is less expensive
than personal computers. The Hardware is available for around Rs. 12,000, which
is easily affordable by small shopkeepers.
At a time, this device is capable of handling data up to 4 MB and can be used again
after data is transferred to the Host PC database, or the same is overwritten by the
application software. This also solves the problem of employing large spaces to
store manual databases. The hand held device is a small microcomputer, which is
capable of generating and printing receipts or bills at the same time.
It is quite efficient and is easy to use by any sales person with a little knowledge to
operate the machine.
OBJECTIVE:-
A E-CANTEEN terminal is a low cost computerized solution to serve as Cash Register.
It would maintain sales and stock of items offered for sales. It may communicate with a
Host PC – installed with specific application, and the bi-directional data transfer can
take place, where the masters can be uploaded on the E-canteen terminal and
transactions can be downloaded on Host PC.
DEFINITION OF E-Canteen:-
E-CANTEEN or E-canteen) is used at canteen, a saras parlour, or the location - where a
sale transaction takes place. More specifically, E-canteenoften refers to the hardware
and software used for checkouts -- the equivalent of an electronic cash register. E-
canteen systems are used in restaurants, hotels, stadiums, and casinos, as well as
almost any type of retail establishment
Genesis of E-CANTEEN technology:-
E-CANTEEN systems evolved from the mechanical cash registers of the first half of
the 20th century. Examples included the NCR registers, operated by a crank, and
the lever-operated Burroughs registers. These cash registers recorded data on
journal tapes or paper tape and required an extra step to transcribe the
information into the retailer's accounting system.
Later cash registers moved to operation by electricity, such as the NCR Class 5 cash
register. The first computer-based systems were introduced in 1973, such as the IBM
3653 Store System and the NCR 2150..
During the late 1980s and 90s, manufacturers developed stand-alone credit card devices
to easily and securely add credit card processing to E-CANTEEN systems. Some
popular models include the VeriFone Tranz 330, Hypercom T7 Plus, and Lipman
Nurit 2085. These relatively simple devices have evolved to handle multiple
applications (credit card processing, gift card activation, age verification, employee
time tracking) on one device. Some wireless E-CANTEEN systems for restaurants
not only allow for mobile payment processing, they also allow servers to process
the entire food order right at tableside.
Most retail E-CANTEEN systems do much more than just "point of sale" tasks. Even
for smaller tier 4 & 5 retailers, many E-CANTEEN systems can include fully integrated
accounting, inventory management, open to buy forecasting, customer relation
management (CRM), service management, rental, and payroll modules. Due to this
wide range of functionality, vendors sometimes refer to E-CANTEEN solutions as
retail management software or business management software.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Handheld Computers with Thermal printer
PC with serial interface
KEIL Software
1) HANDHELD COMPUTERS:
Handheld Computer is a pocket-sized computing device, typically comprising a small
visual display screen for user output and a miniature keyboard or touch screen for user
input.
DESCRIPTION:
The Programmable Data Terminal (PDT) is a Hand Held Computer. It consists of
components like Program flash memory, Data flash memory, customized Keypad,
Display unit with Backlight, Impact or Thermal printer, Rechargeable battery, High
speed RS232 / IR port for programming and data transfer etc. Depending upon the
requirement, the Smart Card reader can also be house in the same casing. The terminal
also can communicate with the remote Host PC using customized PSTN or GSM /
CDMA modem.
A Host PC is made Master station for many such E-canteen(E-canteen) terminals. The
master data of Items, Packing denominations, Rates and Opening stock etc. is stored
and maintained on the Host PC. Depending upon the product sale range
of the "Point of Sale", the corresponding master details are transferred to the Terminal.
The terminal is capable of not only issuing sale voucher of items available in stock; the
stock intake can also be updated. Resultantly, the Inventory and Sale - both can be
monitored with the help of the E-canteen terminal.
Another version of E-canteen Terminal can be supplied as Loyalty terminal also, which
has got RF ID reader. The loyalty amongst potential customers can be developed and
maintained by issuing them the RF ID cards, and keeping track of the purchases they
made. The RF ID cards can be used as e-Purse, where the card is first debited for a pre-
determined value and denomination and the amounts corresponding to periodic
purchases would be credited till the debit limit of the Loyalty card.
The printing of cash voucher is optional. In case of using RFID card, the code / name of
the customer can also be printed on the receipt. The cash and item transaction data is
periodically transferred to the Host PC. The daily collection report is also printed
through the terminal.
Thus the sequence of operation includes preparation of items master data at Host PC,
downloading to E-canteen Terminal, Updating stock through sale and receipt of items,
periodic downloading of data from E-canteen Terminal to Host PC and data
processing at Host PC. The chances of errors and manipulations are also
minimized. Therefore the system becomes speedy, transparent and reliable.
The terminal requires around 4 Hours for full charging. Once the terminal is fully
charged, it can be continuously used with printer for 8 Hours.

Practical Training at REIL

  • 1. A Practical Training Report On E-CANTEEN Submitted By: Arman Aghwani IV Year, EC dept.
  • 3. Abstract In the present world to face enormous challenges of technical world, engineering is a stepping-stone to the technological concern. Summer training after VI semester is an integral part of B.E curriculum, which gives the overview of the corporate world & gets as a link in between the theoretical input and practical application. To get a concrete knowledge of engineering and new technologies there is a provision of summer training. An industry is like an organism, its health depends upon well being of all its parts like Man, Machine, Material, capital, etc. In order to achieve practical experience we took training in a professionally managed and well known organization RAJASTHAN ELECTRONICS AND INSTRUMENTS LTD. which is engaged in manufacturing many types of products like “Electronics Milk Tester”, “photo voltaic Cell”, “Programmable Data Terminal Systems”. In the training period we completed our project on E-CANTEEN. E-CANTEEN is used at canteen or the location - where a sale transaction takes place. More specifically, E-canteenoften refers to the hardware and software used for checkouts -- the equivalent of an electronic cash register. E-canteen systems are used in restaurants, hotels, stadiums, and casinos, as well as almost any type of retail establishment This project comprise the use of PDT or Programmable Data Terminal. In the end, I am confident that this training report will give exhaustive and up to date information with regard to the training process in REIL, Jaipur.
  • 4. • 16. Project E canteen CURRENT SYSTEMS:- In the present scenario, in the era of globalization a large number of canteens and saras parlours (outlets) are required to have a hangout place in colleges and visiting places, which may be helpful in handling not only their larger variety of items on sale, but also can keep an eye on timely updation of their stocks. On the contrary, if we look at smaller general shops, the management of sales and stock is still carried manually. The reason behind this is the inability to invest large capital amount in sales system setup. Resultantly, the bills are still produced manually on these stores, which require lots of time and efforts. This method increases the chances of error manifold. A large amount of time is also consumed in making the manual databases of the sales and also it is difficult to store these databases. PROPOSED SOLUTION:- To overcome the problem of manual bills and to nullify the errors, a handheld computer device can be used by small general stores. This device is small in size, has built-in printer unit and memory. The unit can operate for eight hours after full charging of its rechargeable battery. It is a mobile unit, which is less expensive than personal computers. The Hardware is available for around Rs. 12,000, which is easily affordable by small shopkeepers. At a time, this device is capable of handling data up to 4 MB and can be used again after data is transferred to the Host PC database, or the same is overwritten by the application software. This also solves the problem of employing large spaces to
  • 17. store manual databases. The hand held device is a small microcomputer, which is capable of generating and printing receipts or bills at the same time. It is quite efficient and is easy to use by any sales person with a little knowledge to operate the machine. OBJECTIVE:- A E-CANTEEN terminal is a low cost computerized solution to serve as Cash Register. It would maintain sales and stock of items offered for sales. It may communicate with a Host PC – installed with specific application, and the bi-directional data transfer can take place, where the masters can be uploaded on the E-canteen terminal and transactions can be downloaded on Host PC. DEFINITION OF E-Canteen:- E-CANTEEN or E-canteen) is used at canteen, a saras parlour, or the location - where a sale transaction takes place. More specifically, E-canteenoften refers to the hardware and software used for checkouts -- the equivalent of an electronic cash register. E- canteen systems are used in restaurants, hotels, stadiums, and casinos, as well as almost any type of retail establishment Genesis of E-CANTEEN technology:- E-CANTEEN systems evolved from the mechanical cash registers of the first half of the 20th century. Examples included the NCR registers, operated by a crank, and the lever-operated Burroughs registers. These cash registers recorded data on journal tapes or paper tape and required an extra step to transcribe the information into the retailer's accounting system.
  • 18. Later cash registers moved to operation by electricity, such as the NCR Class 5 cash register. The first computer-based systems were introduced in 1973, such as the IBM 3653 Store System and the NCR 2150.. During the late 1980s and 90s, manufacturers developed stand-alone credit card devices to easily and securely add credit card processing to E-CANTEEN systems. Some popular models include the VeriFone Tranz 330, Hypercom T7 Plus, and Lipman Nurit 2085. These relatively simple devices have evolved to handle multiple applications (credit card processing, gift card activation, age verification, employee time tracking) on one device. Some wireless E-CANTEEN systems for restaurants not only allow for mobile payment processing, they also allow servers to process the entire food order right at tableside. Most retail E-CANTEEN systems do much more than just "point of sale" tasks. Even for smaller tier 4 & 5 retailers, many E-CANTEEN systems can include fully integrated accounting, inventory management, open to buy forecasting, customer relation management (CRM), service management, rental, and payroll modules. Due to this wide range of functionality, vendors sometimes refer to E-CANTEEN solutions as retail management software or business management software.

The master data of Items, Packing denominations, Rates and Opening stock etc. is stored and maintained on the Host PC. Depending upon the product sale range
  • 20. of the "Point of Sale", the corresponding master details are transferred to the Terminal. The terminal is capable of not only issuing sale voucher of items available in stock; the stock intake can also be updated. Resultantly, the Inventory and Sale - both can be monitored with the help of the E-canteen terminal. Another version of E-canteen Terminal can be supplied as Loyalty terminal also, which has got RF ID reader. The loyalty amongst potential customers can be developed and maintained by issuing them the RF ID cards, and keeping track of the purchases they made. The RF ID cards can be used as e-Purse, where the card is first debited for a pre- determined value and denomination and the amounts corresponding to periodic purchases would be credited till the debit limit of the Loyalty card. The printing of cash voucher is optional. In case of using RFID card, the code / name of the customer can also be printed on the receipt. The cash and item transaction data is periodically transferred to the Host PC. The daily collection report is also printed through the terminal. Thus the sequence of operation includes preparation of items master data at Host PC, downloading to E-canteen Terminal, Updating stock through sale and receipt of items, periodic downloading of data from E-canteen Terminal to Host PC and data processing at Host PC. The chances of errors and manipulations are also minimized. Therefore the system becomes speedy, transparent and reliable. The terminal requires around 4 Hours for full charging. Once the terminal is fully charged, it can be continuously used with printer for 8 Hours.
