Scholarship:
As you may know, pursuing higher education in India can be quite expensive, and
many students struggle to afford it. That's where scholarships come in.

➢ Scholarships provide financial assistance to students
who demonstrate academic merit, financial need, or
exceptional talent.
➢ They not only help ease the financial burden but also
enable students to pursue their dreams and achieve their
full potential.
Introduction
Department of Social Welfare:
The Constitution of India provides certain special Constitutional safeguards for the
welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and other weaker sections of the
population, so that they could take their rightful place in community.

➢ Administrative Setup: The Administrative setup of the department has got three levels
❖ State Level: The Commissioner of Social Welfare is functioning as the Head of the Department
and he is assisted by three Joint Director, four Deputy Directors, One Chief Accounts Officer.
❖ District Level: Social Welfare Department at the District Level are being implemented by the
Zilla Panchayats. The District Social Welfare Officer is Head of Social Welfare at the District
Level
❖ Taluk Level: Taluk Social Welfare Officer is the Head of the Taluk Social Welfare Office and he
will work under the control of taluk Panchayat.

➢ Merit-based scholarships: Are awarded to students based on
their academic achievements and performance. For example,
the National Merit Scholarship Program
➢ Need-based scholarships: Are awarded to students who
demonstrate financial need. For example, financial assistance
to students from low- income families.
➢ Talent-based scholarships: Are awarded to students who
demonstrate exceptional skills or talents in a particular field.

➢ The government of India’s Ministry of Education awards scholarships yearly to high
school and college students.
➢ For registration in the government scholarship schemes, one can visit the National
Scholarship Portal’s official website: https://scholarships.gov.in/

Central Sector Scholarship Scheme (CSSS):

➢ This scholarship is only available to college and university Meritorious students with
economic disadvantages are eligible for this scholarship.
❖ Scholarships range from 10,000 to 20,000 rupees per year under this program.
❖ Every year, applications are accepted between August and October for scholarship.
❖ The application must be submitted online via the National Scholarship Portal.
➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– Students with an 80 percentile or higher in their 12th
grade, who are enrolled in a full-time course, and whose household income does not
surpass Rs 8 lakh per year.

National Means cum Merit Scholarship:

➢ After the eighth grade, meritorious students with economic disadvantages can benefit
from this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to one lakh students across the
country each year.
❖ A student can earn up to twelve thousand rupees per year. Every year, applications
are accepted between August and October.
❖ A student must submit an online application through the National Scholarship Portal.
➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– At least 55% in the 8th grade is required. It is also
necessary to take the selection test for this. A minimum of 55% in 7th grade is obligatory
to take the selection test. Annual family income should not exceed Rs 3,50,000 per year.

➢ The scholarships offered by the Indian Government is only available to female students.
It is limited to two girls per family.
❖ The government awards 5000 such scholarships each year. The beneficiary receives
Rs. 50,000/- and various other benefits annually under this program.
❖ Every year, applications are accepted from September to October. The National
Scholarship Portal must be used to apply online.
➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– Students in their first or second year of a technical degree
or diploma program. Those admitted to that course via lateral entry based on 12th grade
will benefit from this. A family’s annual income should be less than or equal to Rs 8
lakh.

AICTE Saksham Scholarship:

➢ This scholarship program encourages technical education, particularly among specially-
abled students who are talented.
❖ This benefit is available to highly qualified students pursuing a technical degree or
diploma program. Students receive a scholarship of 50,000 rupees and other benefits
under this program.
❖ Applications are accepted between September and October. Online applications can be
submitted via the National Scholarship Portal.
➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– Students who are at least 40% disabled are admitted in the
first year of a degree or diploma course at an AICTE-affiliated institute through lateral
entry. The student’s family income must be less than Rs 8 lakh annually.

➢ PG Indira Gandhi Scholarship For Single Girl Child
❖ 3000 scholarships are provided to the only girl child who enrols in the first year of a
PG course only.
❖ The maximum age of the girl should be 30. Distance education mode is not eligible.
➢ PG Scholarship For University Rank Holders (Ist And IInd Rank Holders)
❖ The awardees, under this scheme, can pursue their Postgraduate programme in any
area of specialization in any institution of higher learning in the country
➢ PG Scholarship Scheme For SC ST Students For Pursuing Professional Courses
❖ 1000 scholarships are provided for postgraduate level studies in professional subjects
in Indian universities/institutions/ colleges.

Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF):

➢ The Prime Minister Research Fellowship is awarded to students to promote the research
trend. This means that the PMRF program is for PhD-level research in the fields of
Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Medicine.
❖ It is a collaborative effort between the Science and Engineering Research Board
(SERB) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
❖ The PMRF scheme offers Ph.D. students scholarships of up to INR 10.92 lakhs per
year, with the government providing 50% and a sponsoring industry providing the
remaining 50% for four years.
➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– Students enrolled in Ph.D. programs at a PMRF-eligible
institute benefit from this.

➢ Central Sector Scheme Of Scholarships For College And University Students
❖ 82000 scholarships are awarded under this scheme to meritorious students from low
income families.
❖ It is awarded for regular graduate, post-graduate and professional degree programmes.
❖ Students between the ages of 18 and 25 from different state boards; having above 80
percent marks in Class 12th are eligible.
➢ National Means Cum Merit Scholarship
❖ 1 lakh scholarships are provided under this scheme to class 9th meritorious students
whose annual family income is not above Rs. 1.5 lakh..

➢ National Scholarship for Higher Education Scheme for SC Students
❖ The scheme was approved in 2007.
❖ 4200 scholarships are provided (30 percent slots for SC Girls.)
❖ Those SC students having total annual family income from all sources up to Rs. 8.00
lakh
❖ Having secured admission in a full-time prescribed course in any of the notified
institutions according to the general selection criteria prescribed by the concerned
institution, will be eligible for scholarship under the Scheme to the extent of the
number of scholarships (slots) allocated to the institution for the course.

➢ National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students
❖ It is a scholarship for ‘Formally Top Class Education for Scheduled Tribe Students.’
❖ Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship (RGNF) for ST students and Top Class Education
for ST Students were two central sector schemes that merged to create National
Fellowship and Scholarship for ST Students Higher Education.’
➢ It has two components –
❖ Fellowship (Introduced in 2014): Fellowship is awarded for ST students for higher
education courses like PhD, M.Phil etc,
❖ Scholarship (Introduced in 2015.): Scholarships for ST students to opt graduation or
post-graduation courses in government or private institutions.

➢ Pre Matric Scholarships Scheme for Minorities. It was announced in 2006.
❖ It is awarded to meritorious students.
❖ It is awarded to students studying in class 1 to class 10th, and have secured at least 50 percent
marks in the last final examination. Also, the annual family income of such students shouldn’t
exceed Rs. 1 lakh.
➢ Post Matric Scholarships Scheme for Minorities. It was announced in 2006.
❖ It is awarded for studies in government or private institutions for graduation, technical and
vocational courses. (Certificate courses are not allowed.)
➢ Merit Cum Means Scholarship For Professional and Technical Courses
❖ It is awarded for technical and professional courses at the graduate and post-graduate level.
Students with a minimum of 50 percent marks in the previous final examination and whose
annual family income does not exceed Rs. 2 lakh.

❖ For the children of Beedi, Cine, Iron Ore, Manganese Ore & Chrome Ore Mine
(IOMC), and Iron Ore, Manganese Ore & Chrome Ore Mineworkers.
❖ Correspondence courses are not eligible.’

OBC Students in Karnataka can benefit from a number of scholarships provided by the
State government and the Centre.

➢ The application for most of the OBC scholarships in Karnataka is done online by
submitting the application form on the respective website of the conducting Authority.
➢ However, there are a few scholarships for which the application is done through School
or College/ University.

➢ Amount given: Monthly stipend of INR 1500/- per month for a duration of 10 months
each year. / INR 20,000/- : Degree / Master's Degree (General)
➢ Eligibility Criteria: Students of the Backward Classes studying in a College/ University
at UG or PG level. The Annual Family Income should be less than 2.5 lakhs per annum
for Category I. For Category 2A, 3A and 3B it should be less than 1 lakh per annum.
➢ Documents required:
❖ size photograph of the student, Income certificate issued by a competent authority
❖ Address Proof/ Identity Proof, Student’s Bank Account Details
❖ Caste Certificate, Domicile Certificate
❖ Marksheet of previous class/ Semester.

Scholarships for Income Based SC/ST/OBC Scholarship in Karnataka:
To avail scholarship for Minorities in Karnataka, students should apply both under
National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and State Scholarship Portal (SSP)

➢ To avail scholarship for Minorities in Karnataka, students belonging to Muslims,
Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Jains should apply both under National Scholarship
Portal (NSP) and State Scholarship Portal (SSP).
➢ Applying for scholarship under National Scholarship Portal (NSP) (Ministry of Minority
Affairs, GOI) is must for applying under State Scholarship Portal (SSP) - Karnataka,
because NSP ID is required for applying under SSP.
➢ Only those students who are not covered in NSP will be covered under SSP.

➢ Scholarship for Fresh & Renewal will be awarded to the students who have secured not
less than 50% of marks or equivalent grade in the last annual Board/Class examination
with a pass certificate. (Not applicable for students studying in 1st std).
➢ The annual income of the students’ Parents/ Guardians from all sources should not
exceed as mentioned below under each scheme
❖ Rs.1 Lakh for Pre-Matric Scholarship.
❖ Rs.2 Lakh for Post Matric Scholarship.
❖ Rs.2.5 Lakh for Merit Cum Means / Top Class Scholarship.
➢ Students of Karnataka domicile studying in other states are also eligible to apply in
Karnataka.

➢ Scholarships under each scheme are sanctioned only based on Admission fees & Tuition
fees.
➢ Students pursuing correspondence education and certificate courses or training are not
eligible.
➢ Students of other states studying in Karnataka are not eligible to apply from Karnataka.
➢ Students should submit their hardcopies of online application along with documents to
their respective schools/colleges.
➢ Students whose application is not forwarded online to next level by the Head
Master/Principal of the institute, schools, and colleges are not eligible for scholarship.
➢ Merit Cum Means students should upload the required documents.

➢ Applicants are advised to apply online against any one of the scholarship schemes on the
website of National Scholarship Portal at https://scholarships.gov.in or Mobile App –
National Scholarships (NSP).
❖ Step 1: - Go to Website https://scholarships.gov.in
❖ Step 2: - Click on New Registration button.
❖ Step 3:- Go through/Read carefully the guidelines for Registration on National
Scholarship Portal.
❖ Step 4: - After reading guidelines click Checkboxes and Click on “Continue” Button
❖ Step 5:- A new page requesting to enter the personal data will be displayed. Fill
student registration form.

❖ Step 6:- Click on the Checkboxes of Aadhar consent, Bank Account and Application
form.
❖ Step 7:- After entering all required details Click on the Register button.
❖ Step 8:- Student Registration ID will be displayed. (Note down the Student
Registration ID number for further reference and enquiries.
❖ Step 9:- Click on “Continue” button, it will take you to the Login Page.
❖ Step 10:- The login id and password to log into NSP portal will be your Application
Id and DOB respectively.
❖ Step 11:- After Login Student will get an OTP of 5 digits on Registered Mobile
Number/Email ID.

remains in active mode or compliant as per bank’s instructions so that payment of
scholarship does not fail.

➢ Sir C V Raman Scholarship: Scholarship of Rs. 5000/- is paid for encouraging
meritorious students pursuing science education at undergraduate level.
➢ Sanchi Honnamma Scholarship: A Scholarship of Rs.2000/- is provided to girl
students of B.Sc, B.A and B.Com streams.
➢ Kittur Rani Chennamma Puraskar: The fee paid at CET cell is reimbursed to10 girl
students in every district, pursuing professional courses having BPL Card.
➢ Rajeev Gandhi Loan Scholarship: The interest subsidy on Loan availed by students
with annual family income less than Rs.2.5 lakh is paid by the Government.
➢ Kannada/Sanskrit/English Language Scholarship at Degree level: Scholarship
Rs.500 is offered as scholarship to meritorious students who are studying

Adisesha 7 ➢ This scholarship is only available to college and university Meritorious students with economic disadvantages are eligible for this scholarship. ❖ Scholarships range from 10,000 to 20,000 rupees per year under this program. ❖ Every year, applications are accepted between August and October for scholarship. ❖ The application must be submitted online via the National Scholarship Portal. ➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– Students with an 80 percentile or higher in their 12th grade, who are enrolled in a full-time course, and whose household income does not surpass Rs 8 lakh per year.

Adisesha 8 ➢ After the eighth grade, meritorious students with economic disadvantages can benefit from this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to one lakh students across the country each year. ❖ A student can earn up to twelve thousand rupees per year. Every year, applications are accepted between August and October. ❖ A student must submit an online application through the National Scholarship Portal. ➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– At least 55% in the 8th grade is required. It is also necessary to take the selection test for this. A minimum of 55% in 7th grade is obligatory to take the selection test. Annual family income should not exceed Rs 3,50,000 per year.

The National Scholarship Portal must be used to apply online. ➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– Students in their first or second year of a technical degree or diploma program. Those admitted to that course via lateral entry based on 12th grade will benefit from this. A family’s annual income should be less than or equal to Rs 8 lakh.

Students receive a scholarship of 50,000 rupees and other benefits under this program. ❖ Applications are accepted between September and October. Online applications can be submitted via the National Scholarship Portal. ➢ Who will benefit (eligibility)– Students who are at least 40% disabled are admitted in the first year of a degree or diploma course at an AICTE-affiliated institute through lateral entry. The student’s family income must be less than Rs 8 lakh annually.

It was announced in 2006. ❖ It is awarded to meritorious students. ❖ It is awarded to students studying in class 1 to class 10th, and have secured at least 50 percent marks in the last final examination. Also, the annual family income of such students shouldn’t exceed Rs. 1 lakh. ➢ Post Matric Scholarships Scheme for Minorities. It was announced in 2006. ❖ It is awarded for studies in government or private institutions for graduation, technical and vocational courses. (Certificate courses are not allowed.) ➢ Merit Cum Means Scholarship For Professional and Technical Courses ❖ It is awarded for technical and professional courses at the graduate and post-graduate level. Students with a minimum of 50 percent marks in the previous final examination and whose annual family income does not exceed Rs. 2 lakh.
