5. UK’s Greenest Grocer
£m
It makes business sense…
and its integral to both our corporate and colleague values
Saving resources and carbon is crucial for our 20 by 20 plan
Energy isn’t getting cheaper
6. •Operational carbon
•Packaging
•Positive waste
•Supplier carbon
•Water
The scale of our business means we can make a significant difference by ensuring respect for our environment is embedded in our decision making. Respect for our environment

10. Why LNG & LBM
•Liquid Gas -Give the vehicle better range
•LBM -Fuel from landfill
•LNG/LBM –Mixture due to availability of LBM
•Environment -25% reduction in CO2
•Methane catalysts – methane slip
11. The Journey towards a 2014 dual-fuel fleet of 110 vehicles
•2007: Trialled our first Dual Fuel tractor at our Haydock depot
•2008:Our first Dual fuel truck delivered products to our first environmentally built store in Dartmouth
•2009:Trial extended to 5 x Euro 3 Mercedes CAP dual fuel vehicles
•2010:New trial of Euro 5 Volvo CAP dual fuel tractor
•2012:Introduced 50 Volvo CAP dual-fuel tractors
Temporary gas station installed at Emerald Park depot
•2013:Purchased and commissioned our new gas station at Emerald Park
Purchased 7 x Volvo methane tractors
•2014: Introduced additional 51 dual fuel tractors
Introduce first Euro 6 dual fuel Mercedes Actros into the fleet for trial.
12. Current Dual Fuel tractor Fleet
•100 x Clean Air Power
•7 x Volvo Methane
•1 x Hardstaff
•2 x Prins
13. F Gas
•Legislation in this area is moving fast and may not be on everyone’s radar
•Ozone depleting refrigerants are under scrutiny and are slowly being phased out
•1Kg of R404a = 13922Kg of Co2e
•1Kg of Co2 = 1Kg of Co2e
14. First naturally refrigerated trailer
This trailer uses an
eco-friendly refrigeration
System initially developed
for deep sea containers.
It is a world first for
transporting chilled and
frozen goods using
natural refrigerant.
Following a two year successful trial with frozen food we are now looking to extend our partnership with Carrier Transicold and use this technology in our chilled chain
15. What has our experience taught us?
•Understand the parameters –Constant speed, high tork, long journeys
•Speed limits –no good at low speed
•Cold weather Freezing
•Modified fill point on tractors
•Filling and pressure
•Heated hoses
•Dual fuel System issues
•Driver training
16. •Stability in future duty rate for road fuel gas required
–Duty differential between main rate of fuel duty and rate for road fuel gases –LNG, CNG, bio methane to be maintained at current levels until 2024
•Development of national refuelling infrastructure on main motorway routes
•Securing bio methane supplies for the transport sector
•Derogations in vehicle weights and dimension limits to allow for new tanks and equipment
•Better understanding of the barriers to wider uptake and work collaboratively to remove them
•Enable reporting of bio methane via Green Gas Certificates in carbon reporting
FTA Gas Manifesto calling for….
17. To build more momentum we need…
•Development of national re-fuelling network on main motorway routes
•Derogations in vehicle weights and dimensions to allow for new tanks and equipment
•Securing bio-methane supplies for the transport sector
This is already supported by……
•Stability of the duty rate for road fuel gas with differential extended to 2024
Sainsbury’s Strategy
•We want to reduce our reliance on diesel and expand the gas fleet to circa 250 vehicle, this will support the reduction of our operational CO2 emissions. Summary
