1. Question 5:
How did you attract/address your audience?
I addressed my audience through a mix of informality and a formal way in some ways. The colour
scheme that I chose to use, consisting of darker colours, grey, whites and blacks will attract an older
audience, adults possible. Where-as aspects including the logo and genre of the magazine would
attract a younger target audience. This has enabled me to diversify my target audience so I am able
to attract a range of people to read the magazine. I feel that using a younger model to use for my
photography has helped me enabled me to attract that younger side of the target audience,
however the layout, the colour scheme and the house style will attract an older target audience.
For my main double page article, I wanted to set it out in the style of a question and answer session
as this is what I found to be most common in my market research and the product research at the
earlier stage of production. The question and answer set up will appeal to a range of people as it is
most common and this is what many people will expect to find when reading a media product such
as a music magazine. The main body of text isn’t too lengthy, it’s not too short either, and I feel that
this will also appeal to more people and attract them to read this magazine. If I was going to edit the
text, I would change the font style as I feel that it is inappropriate for the style of the magazine.
Looking at the text, I would say it isn’t the easiest to read, this could be an improvement for my
magazine if I was to remake it in the future.
On the other hand, a positive aspect of the overall product, I feel that I have been successful in
terms of keeping the house style the same through the 3 different pieces. I have used the same
colours and background style in all three of my pages that have constructed. This will attract more
people to read it as it shows consistency that can be found in a professional music magazine.
I also feel that the use of a photography studio when taking the photos to be used in my magazine
were strong and they also relate to the genre of music that I have based this music magazine on.
This will attract people to read the magazine as the stronger the photography, the better the overall
magazine will look. After reviewing the magazines, NME and Kerrang, these both have great imagery
as part of their main content and these are two of the world’s most successful music magazines in
the world. Kerrang published by Bauer Media and NME published by IPC Media, this gives them a
good firm to promote and advertise their content as well as publish it to a wider audience.
2. Question 6:
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
To create my media product I had to learn about different technologies that would enable me to
create a professional and high quality music magazine.
Firstly, when it came to constructing my final piece of work, I had to understand the basic and many
of the more advanced features of Adobe Photoshop to construct and edit my music magazine to a
professional quality. I had to learn how to navigate the toolbars and different options that I could
apply to my magazine, things such as the background colour, gradients and the magic wand
selection tool. Photoshop was used by me as it is the most comprehensive photo and imagery
editing software that could give me the best results when it came to producing the different pages
of my magazine. It allowed me to develop important skills that have helped me construct my music
magazine; it also gave me a lot of freedom and enabled me to gain more creativity to produce a
product of such a good standard. I believe that looking at previous examples of other music
magazines such as the NME have helped me base a good standard of media product on. Finally, I had
to also know how to save and in what format to save my finished products on so that certain format
such as a JPEG or a HTML file could be used on Blogger.
Furthermore, I learnt how to use Blogger to publish all my finished articles of work on. I had to
understand the main principles of publishing work into a media portfolio that can be opened and
viewed by the audience of who reads it. Blogger has further developed important skills that have let
me create a music magazine. It was used in many ways by me, I sometimes had to convert my work
over using the free online software- Slideshare, so I could view my Microsoft Word documents in
Blogger. I also had to learn how to set the account up in the first place by editing my settings so I
could keep the blog private. I also had to set up labels on the site so I could insert my completed
work under the correct heading to be published in a different section of the blog. The final thing that
I had to learn how to use in Blogger was how to upload images, unlike the Word documents being
converted in Slideshare, I just had to directly upload them using the Blogger toolbar and clicking
‘insert image’ to view images on my blog.
In order to gain professional looking photographs, I had to learn how to use a Nikon DSLR camera.
This involved me being able to change some of the complex settings that come with the camera.
Using the rule of thirds to take my photos, I used this to take a balanced photograph that covers all
the main focal points in the rule of thirds frame so it would cover more space when it came to
inserting it onto my final magazine page. I also had to learn how to take good quality photos in
different light settings in different locations; this involved me having to use the camera in a different
way as a professional photography artist would to gain good quality photos that would be seen in a
high standard music magazine.
Without much of this technology, through the use of different hardware and software, I believe that
it would not have been possible to create my music magazine. The use of technological convergence
in the media industry has made it much easier and for me to create a music magazine to a very high,
professional standard. Technological convergence has allowed me to create, edit and distribute my
work.
