Coming Out The Dark
In the era of Rock ‘N’ Roll way back at its roots in the 1940’s and 50’s , there was a new wave, a
pioneering generation carving their way into what people know as Rock today. The ‘Golden Age’ of
the 60’s demonstrated the power and influential music screeching into people’s ears, where bands
such as Bon Jovi through the 1980’s or even earlier, The Rolling Stones back in 1962 helped build the
path of Rock today. Since then we have seen all sorts of subgenres emerge- from indie rock to
grindcore, all which have derived from the 40’s.
But now, there’s a new band on the block that’s trying to pave their own way into the Rock n’ Roll
Hall of Fame. We caught up with Comprehensive Mayhem’s frontman Reece Cordinglyfor an
exclusive question and answer session to the band’s upcoming success.
Q: “So Reece, tell me how this band came to be”
A:“Well it was just a matter of luck, I mean, I knew a few of the guys from around my hometown but
to be honest we all just met at college and went from there. I would go back to Josh’s house, play a
few chords and write things down...Although this was three years ago and we thought nothing of it.
After a while a few other people from college wondered if we were making a band and at first the
thought never occurred to me but I decided straight away that we would. We started playing in
college for a small group of friends this ended up being posted on YouTube, and then all a sudden it
went viral, at first I didn’t believe when my friends told me that the songs we played had more than a
million views, so me and the guys got talking and figured that we should put our music on iTunes,
just to see what happens, we had nothing to lose. This is how it all started after that I got a letter
through my door from Indie record label- Rocked asking me and the guys to start recording some
new material within the week.”
Q: “What is the inspiration then for the new material you guys are preparing then?”
A: “When it comes to writing a song, we really find inspiration from well established bands such as
Coldplay and also our cross-Atlantic friends, The Killers. These guys seem to be really inspirational
when it comes to writing the new stuff as the content that we focus on is similar. As we’re a
Mancunian band, we also look towards the other local bands, Oasis and The Smiths just to recall are
two of the UK’s finest bands, hopefully we will become the third and even maybe record something
with them.”
Q: “Where do you expect to be in 10 years time?”
A: “We want to be up there y’know… Playing all the big festivals, Hyde Park Calling, Glasto and
possibly Rock in Rio just for example. Maybe have a triple platinum album to go global but Chris [The
dude on the drums] recons we’re crap, we tell him to shut up though. If we get our new material into
the record shops within the next few years, I recon we have made it, the money may be an issue to
get there but don’t worry, we’re gonna work on that so we can be successful in the next decade.
We’re yet to play the big arenas and stadiums but this decade, we hope to play everyone of them
and show the crowds how amazing we really are!”

Q: “The final question that I’m going to ask you Reece, but how would you define success?”
A: “Jeees, that’s ahard question, success? I guess that’s when we get to the very top, as big as an A-
List band.We want to be that band, headlining the magazines- not about the drink and drugs, but
more about what we’re truly about. All three of us in this band work stupidly hard, but look- we have
interviews and a spot on the Kerrang UK tour at the Manchester Apollo next year. Success to us
would mean a lot, everything. It’s all well and good seeing other successful bands but now we want a
piece of that pie that they’re eating and get big. When on our tour of the bars in 2012, we came to
the conclusion that this is what we want to be doing, o na much bigger scale, performing to
thousands of fans, possibly millions? [Haha] but we will just have to see about that.
It’s been great being able to interview an upcoming band such as Comprehensive Mayhem and we
hope to hear a lot more of them in the future. And actually get them to see them headline
Glastonbury. If you want to find more about the band or where abouts they are in terms of the
production, visit the band’s YouTube page. This band are slowly but surely making their way to the
top.
