Successful Ecological Restoration Project
Currently in South Florida, there are several restoration projects in place for repairing the greater
Everglades ecosystem. The Everglades system stretches all the way from Orlando all the way to the Florida Keys
coral reef tract. Disruptions to the natural hydrology of the Everglades over the past 50 years have severely
degraded the water of this system. Much of the disruption comes from flood control that has been changed and
distribution of water for urban and agriculture development, with continuing development, more stress has been
added. All of this together has deeply affected the timing and distribution of water flow in southern Florida. From
this, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan was born. It is designed to, “get the water right,” by fixing the
quality, quantity, as well as timing and distribution of the Everglades. This plan is scheduled to take over 20 years
to finish, costing over 8 billion dollars, and includes 60 components.
