1. How effective is the combination
of your main product and
ancillary tasks?
Dan Ackerman
2. Strengths and weaknesses of
poster
Something that worked well in regards to my poster may be the inclusion of Ben
Pipes as a star vehicle in the centre of the poster. This will help to attract attention to
my documentary, as people may be inclined to watch it if they see that Ben Pipes is
featured in it. I also positioned the picture of Ben in the centre of the poster to make
him the main focus point, so that he is the first thing that people see when looking at
the poster.
A second strength of my newspaper advert was the colour scheme in which I chose
to apply to the poster. I chose to use the colours of blue, red, white and black to apply
a motif between the poster and the documentary itself, representing the iconic
colours of the Great Britain flag and the kit in which the Great Britain team wore at the
Olympics. This adds familiarity between both the poster and the documentary itself.
3. Strengths and weaknesses of
poster
Another strength in relation to my poster is in relation to the text, of both the title of
the documentary and the slogan featured at the bottom of the poster. I believe that
both of the pieces of text are easy to read and are clearly identifiable. I believe that
the outer glow of the text featuring the slogan makes it stand out from the rest of the
poster, although it does make it slightly harder to read and is quite overwhelming.
A weakness relating to my poster was the fact that there is no information provided
about when the documentary is going to be aired or what time it will be shown. This is
extremely vital information that should always be included and provided to the
audience, because if they are interested in watching it, they will have no idea about
when it will be shown. If I was to create the poster for a second time, I would definitely
make sure to include the logo of the channel in which I decided to broadcast it on, in
this case it was Channel 4, and the time and date of when it was going to be aired.
4. Strengths and weaknesses of
radio trailer
Something that worked well within my radio trailer was the inclusion of audio
extracts featuring both Ben and Darius, who are focused on heavily in my
documentary. By including this audio from these two people, I am
introducing the audience to the subjects before they have even watched the
documentary, and will familiarise them and help them feel connected to the
people featured within the documentary.
Also, by choosing to feature Ben's voice within the trailer, it almost acts a
kind of aural signifier, as audiences that take a keen interest in volleyball
and follow the Great Britain squad, may recognise Ben's voice and may be
inclined to watch the documentary as they recognise that Ben is featured. In
this way, Ben again acts as a type of star vehicle as he is known very well
within the volleyball world, and may be recognised easily by audiences in
who are interested in volleyball.
5. Strengths and weaknesses of
radio trailer
Another strength relating to my radio trailer was that it contains relevant information in
regards to the documentary, for example, it contains the name of the documentary,
the time in which it is going to be aired and the name of the channel in which it is
going to be broadcast on. By including this information at the end of the trailer, it will
help for the listener to remember the information they are being provided with as it is
the last thing they hear from the trailer and will stay in their long term memory.
Another aspect of my radio trailer in which I would change if I was to carry out the
task again, would be to include the same narrator in which was featured in the
documentary, as the difference in voice may cause some confusion to the audience.
A further strength I believe worked well in my trailer was the inclusion of a male
narrator providing the voice over, as I believe a male voice is more dominant and
more authoritive then perhaps a female voice would be. This also expresses the motif
of the documentary as the documentary only focus's on only male 'characters', and
perhaps including a female voice may cause some confusion to the audience.
6. Strengths and weaknesses of
radio trailer
A weakness of my radio trailer may be perhaps that the audio levels of the trailer
could be adjusted slightly so that each of the different audio clips are normalised and
the loudness doesn't change depending on the audio clip. I could also have removed
some background noise from some of the clips, especially of the one featuring
Darius, as there are a few different noises in which may distract the audience from
hearing the information that Darius is providing.
I could also have included some kind of aural signifier in which would be featured
across both the documentary and the radio trailer, and would be instantly
recognisable to the audience and be uniquely linked to only my documentary.
If I was to create my radio trailer again, I would definitely choose to contain audio
clips that are featured within my documentary to add continuity to the task and also
familiarise the audience with what to expect from the documentary before watching it.
7. How have they impacted each
other?
I believe that each of my ancillary tasks all complement each other in one way or
another and I believe that they all impact each other in a positive way. For example, I
believe that a lot of continuity is held up between each of the tasks, in which then
helps to add familiarisation to the audience no matter which medium they have
interacted with. By featuring both Ben and Darius in the poster and radio trailer, it
helps for audiences to link both of these people to my documentary, so that if they
ever see them featured on a poster, or hear them on a radio advertisement, they
would clearly be able to make a link to 'The Elite Athletes' documentary. I believe that
if I had chosen to feature the same music within both my documentary and the radio
trailer, the tasks would have further impacted each other, as there would be an
extended amount of continuity, and would be cross linked with each other extremely
well as listeners of the radio trailer would distinguish this music with the documentary
and vice versa.
