Describe the most outstanding leader you have worked with
1. Describe the most outstanding leader you have worked with. Indicate some aspects of the
way you work that are similar to the way this leader works and others that are different.
The most outstanding leader I have worked with is Mr Ige Belo. He was the head of the Gas
Business of Conoil Producing from the very first time I joined Conoil Plc in 2010 till 2012 when he
left the company. He was a great leader indeed and showed leadership qualities till he left. He
motivates and inspires the team and never makes us fell tense from the pressure from top
management or being afraid of him. He often leaves his office to stay in our office all the time, and
goes as far as bringing down his work tools to work together with us. He is a communicator and a
team-player. He lets us know everything that is happening in the company from top to bottom and
the goals and strategies he has. He never hesitates to provide platforms for us to develop ourselves
and gain exposure, for instance trainings and conference.
He knows our personal problems and challenges because he wants to know, so we tell him
everything. He renders financial assistance and advice and follows up on your progress. He is one of
my key drivers for applying to IE business school. He wants me to do my MBA in the best business
school. He calls me time after time even after he has left the company to know whether I have
gotten admission in a business school and travelled out or still in Nigeria.
He is an entrepreneur, has a franchise for composite gas cylinders with Ragasco Norway and a
board of director of Town Gas Nigeria Limited. He attends industry conferences and expos around
the world.
I took after his global mindset; the way I work is far different from the way other colleagues work.
My levels of insights on issues are deep and verse. I think this was born out of moments I spent with
him. He always sends the international opportunities my way. The desire for entrepreneurship and
international business also grew from his presence and leadership. I act and think like one and I see
through things, products, ideas, initiatives, problems and phenomena. He would always tell me to
look at the business from an entrepreneurial point of view or like a business man not as an
employee.
I emulated his leadership and management style, the way he leads and manages all the
departmental functions and employees with ease. There is no better way that I think could work for
me than the way used to work with and through people. Currently, I have five people under my
direct supervision and I have been efficient in managing them and their responsibilities. Working
with people is one thing and managing people is another. I have learned and understood the skills
and techniques in dealing with diverse people and managing across boarders. Also, I am the leader
of a department of my church in Nigeria, MVP Department. I lead the members and manage the
activities of the department is similar to the way he led.
My networking abilities and skills were honed and developed by him. He tells me how to network
and how not to network. Today, in the downstream industry, I have built multiple connections that
have helped me exceed targets and expectations. After work hours, I would stay over in his office to
discuss business and the industry issues. He would list out events and meetings he would be going
every week. He took me to one of the events one day and after that, I started engaging in
networking.
2. I have not been stable in making decision and standing by them. He usually makes decisions in the
company and stands by them without sentiments. Disciples any body who faults the rules and
policies. I know within myself that I have not reached that level in leadership and management. I
feel it is because I am young and do not have a lot year of work experience, and so might be wrong
in some of my decisions. Most times I seek other people opinion on the decisions I took. I feel this is
what is different and what is lacking in me.
