Informal Interview Analysis
Garcia, Jr., Servando
Professor Michele Lockhart
BA Professional Development 3100 - 002
November 20, 2013
On November 8, 2013, I conducted an informal interview with a professional in the field
of business administration. I am pursuing a degree in business administration with a
concentration in innovation and entrepreneurship. To obtain more information on this
concentration and job experience, I conducted this interview. Before the interview, I searched on
the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) website to find someone in the field of innovation and
entrepreneurship. Once I found that person, I emailed them to set a time and place to meet. The
interview with this professional gave me more information for my future. After the interview, I
learned more about his professional and educational background, his future goals, and his
hobbies and then he gave me advice, which made me reflect on my goals.
First, Madison Pedigo described his education, training, professional, and workplace
background. Educationally, my interviewee received an MBA (Masters of Business
Administration) in Finance and Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin in May 1980.
Moreover, Pedigo received a BA (Bachelors of Art) degree in Biochemistry from the University
of Texas at Austin in May 1977. After earning these degrees, Pedigo received training in
seminars, conferences, speeches, and meetings.
In addition to his education, Pedigo has plenty of professional and workplace
background. His workplace and professional background goes back over thirty-two years. He has
been the associate director and senior lecturer for the innovation and entrepreneurship program

from June 2009 through the present. This program is part of UTD and the Naveen Jindal School
of Management. Before this position, he was the co-founder and manager for Texas Instruments
Incorporated from June 1996 through May 2009. In fact, he worked at this same company for
over twenty years; he was project manager from January 1994 through June 1996. Also
beforehand, he was manager from 1987 through 1993. In addition, he was a financial manager
and program administrator in the time range of 1980 through 1986. With this, Pedigo has over
twenty-nine years of business experience. According to Pedigo, business experience is good to
have to be successful in the business world.
Besides all this direction and advice, I also learned surprising information about Pedigo.
Apart from working in business for over twenty-nine years, he also has hobbies. He told me that
he was on the tennis team in high school and reads tennis magazines. In addition, he participated
in college intramurals sports. Aside from playing and liking sports, he likes cats because he gets
to play with them for fun. This surprising information makes me think about my personal life.
When I obtain my career, I do not want work to be my life. I want to have a life outside of work
where I can relax. Relaxing for me would involve exercising, playing video games, traveling,
and various other leisure activities.
Furthermore, Pedigo has future goals beyond his present position. Presently, since Pedigo
is a professor, he wants to get better at teaching. He has only been doing it for five years after all.
To get better at teaching, he wants to introduce new teaching methods into his classes such as
activities, group work, handouts, PowerPoint, and discussions. Upon these goals, he wants to
advance to become director and associate director of the innovation and entrepreneurship
program. Then after these positions, he wants to be associate dean, and then, finally, dean. In
order to achieve these positions, he wants to be more involved in academic programs and with

students. Overall, Pedigo said he wants to get better at anything he does, and I was able to relate
because I am the same way in school and work. Not only do I seek to improve myself, but I also
have a persistent personality.
Pedigo also gave me advice on my own future career. Even though he is a professor, he
has over twenty-nine years of business experience as manager and director. Given his business
experience as a leader, he told me that experience helps in the business world. To obtain
experience he told me that I should get internships or related jobs. In addition, he told me not all
information can be learned from books. Not all ideas and concepts are used and applied unless
you have job experience and practice using the knowledge.
After speaking about how to gain experience, he also directed me on how I should use
and apply this advice. To get job experience, I need to find internships through companies and
the career centers at UTD. I specifically need to find jobs with companies I would like to work
for. Besides internships and jobs, I need to get involved and join clubs on campus. I agree that I
need to fulfill these duties, which relate to my major and degree, to be successful.
After the interview, I had much to reflect upon, such as the connection between Pedigo
and me. Between Pedigo and me, I see that he has an MBA and I am seeking one. In looking to
the future, an MBA is my future objective after my bachelor’s degree. Pedigo gave me
suggestions such as getting internships with a company I might like. Once I obtain my
internships, I should also look to joining clubs like the entrepreneurship club (E-club), Graduate
Business Society (GBS), Enactus, and UT Dallas Business Idea competition. These are necessary
for me to get job experience and extracurricular activities will help me to build upon my resume.
Once I fulfill these tasks, I look forward to prepare for my interview and obtain my career.

In addition, I obtained other information about the innovation and entrepreneurship
program and how it will affect my future. Pedigo gave me a PowerPoint print-out and handouts
about the program. Once I am done with my preparatory and required courses, I will get into
major related courses. I first need to take entrepreneurship, and then I will take the concentration
core courses, which include entrepreneurial finance, entrepreneurial strategy and business
models, small business management, and corporate entrepreneurship. These courses will prepare
me for careers as a manager of a growing firm or an established firm. I am still thinking about
majoring or minoring in innovation and entrepreneurship, but what I decide is all up to my future
goals. Having a concentration chosen for my career would allow me to get into something that
will interest me.
Looking to the future, I must consider what classes I must take to fulfill my goals. I still
have not decided which concentration I will choose. Pedigo told me I still have plenty of time to
decide. I still have to take probability and statistics for management and economics, advanced
business communication, business finance, operations management, organizational behavior,
international business, and strategic management. All of these courses have their prerequisites
and sequence of order to enroll in the class. I seek to fulfill all the prerequisites and obtain good
grades. Once I obtain these good grades and complete my core courses, I will get into my major
related courses.
In sum, I still have plenty of time to get my bachelors and then my master’s degree. After
conducting the informal interview, I learned more about the innovation and entrepreneurship
program. Not only did I learn this but also that I need to obtain job experience, internships, and
extracurricular activities. Pedigo gave me much advice for being successful in the years to come.
