2. What is Speed?
A change in distance within a given time interval is called SPEED. Speed,
therefore, is the rate of change in position. It can be measured by
dividing the distance covered by the elapsed time. Thus,
speed = distance
time
In symbols,
v = d
t

4. FOR EXAMPLE
An athlete can run 180 meters (m) in 20 seconds (s).
What is his speed?
Given: d = 180 m
t = 20 s
Find: v= ?
Formula : v=d/t
Solution: v= 180 m/20 s
Answer : v = 9 m/s
5. FOR EXAMPLE
If a car travels 400m in 20 seconds how fast is it going?
Given: d = 400 m
t = 20 s
Find: v= ?
Formula : v=d/t
Solution: v= 400 m/20 s
Answer : v = 200 m/s
6. FOR EXAMPLE
You arrive in my class 45 seconds after leaving math
which is 90 meters away. How fast did you travel?
Given: d = 90 m
t = 45 s
Find: v= ?
Formula : v=d/t
Solution: v= 90 m/45 s
Answer : v = 2 m/s
7. UNIFORM MOTION
An object moving with constant speed and direction is in
uniform motion. By constant speed, we mean that the object
is not slowing down or speeding up. By constant direction we
mean that the object is moving along a straight line or its path
does not change at all. Therefore a body moving at a constant
or uniform velocity is moving in a straight line at a constant
speed. This means that the moving object covers equal
distances at equal intervals of time.
8. UNIFORM MOTION
Time and Distance Traveled by an Object in Uniform Motion
Time (s) Distance (m)
0 0
5 10
10 20
15 30
20 40
25 50
30 60
9. AVERAGE SPEED
Average Speed is the total distance traveled divided by
the total time of travel. In equation form,
vave = total distance
total time
10. AVERAGE SPEED
Average Speed is the total distance traveled divided by
the total time of travel. In equation form,
vave = total distance

11. INSTANTANEOUS SPEED
The rate at which an object moves at any given instant is
called instantaneous speed. Although it is impossible to
measure the speed of a moving object at a very short interval
of time, some devices like the speedometer of a car gives the
instantaneous speed. A speedometer is a device fixed on a
vehicle’s cockpit and is used to measure the car’s actual
travelling speed. The speedometer in every car has an
odometer that records the distance traveled/
