FAMOUS CD ALBUM
COVERS
I have been doing some research into the most famous CD covers of all
time and I found the perfect website, Billboard, this enabled me to see
the ‘Top 50 Greatest Album Covers of all time’ and explore what made
them so iconic in the industry. Please feel free to explore these slides
and discover some of the greatness of CD Covers.
‘The Velvet Underground and Nico’ (1967) was rated the greatest
album cover of all time by Billboard. It made such an iconic impact
on the music industry as the cover combines humour, art and music
into the picture.
The Beatles ‘Abbey Road’ album cover of 1969 had a major impact
throughout time. The Abbey Road album cover was an effort to get the
group back on track after the fairly disastrous sessions for the Let It Be
project, this record found the Beatles. The cover is a testament of the
lasting impression of street crossing photos, which hundreds of fans
continue to recreate. This album cover is the first of The Beatles which
doesn’t feature their name or title. They have used the cover itself to
create the image for themselves, which people will forever recgonise.
The Notorious B.I.G ‘ready to die’ album cover reached great
popularity in the US and world wide, to this day it is still rated the 4th
best album cover of all time. The album cover sparked such high
interest due to the vast contradiction of the innocence of a baby
sized Biggie compared to the content which the album contained
inside. The partly autobiographical album tells the story of B.I.G.'s
experiences as a young criminal to a mournful, foreshadowing end.
Which uses the innocence of the child to illustrate how cruel the
world can imprint on unmoulded minds. Ready to Die is his only
studio album released during his lifetime, as he was murdered just
days prior to the release of his second album
Nirvana- Nevermind (1991) is one of the most recognizable album
covers of all time. It was rated the 7th best album cover of all time
and is said to have been such a great hit within the industry as the
naked baby reaching for a dollar bill represents the sad truth of
the values which our society passes onto the youth. This
meaningful album cover has created a sense of emotion to the
audience, making it iconic to this day.
M.I.A Kala album cover, which dropped in 2007 is rated the 43rd
best album cover of all time. The use of the loud, jarring
colours mixed with pixelating lettering, African patterns and a
repeated call to ‘fight on’ was done precociously to create a
memorable image, that when people look at it in 10 years they
remember the specific time, the shapes, the prints, the sound,
film, technology, politics, economics, everything from the time
period. This caused great criticism at the time, however this
criticism helped the album to maintain popularity as it was
constantly in the publics eye.
Lady Gaga- The Fame Monster
This album cover is so iconic due to the simplicity of the
album. Very few people can pull off portrait shots but this
album cover created such an iconic view just from this simple
portrait shot, when its done right. She's popular with iconic
imagery and the effects which she has combined into this shot,
such as the white wig and angular coat shrouded over the
lower half of her face, denoted the monster hiding from the
fame, which is a clever representation for an album cover.
