4. 3. Connect humidifier to tubing attached to nasal
cannula.
4. Turn on oxygen flow meter
until bubbling
is noted in humidifier.
5. Adjust the required amount of oxygen via flow
meter
6. Put on gloves.
5. 7. Place tips of cannula in patient’s nares (nose); fit
tubing over ears, tighten tubing under chin.
8. Position patient for
comfort with head of bed
elevated.
9. Check the running of O2 by two fingers and then
give prescribed amount of oxygen as order.
6. Simple Face Mask, Partial Rebreather Mask,
Nonrebreather Mask.
Implementation
1. Wash hands.
2. Prepare humidifier: Add distilled water if needed.
3. connect humidifier to mask tubing.
7. 4. Turn on oxygen flow meter until bubbling is
noted in humidifier.
5. Adjust the required amount
of oxygen via flow meter.
6. Put on gloves.
7. Position patient for
comfort with head of bed elevated.
8. Check the running of O2 by two fingers
9. Place O2 mask over the patient’s face.
10. Give prescribed amount of oxygen as order.
10. Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal and Oropharyngeal
Airways
Procedure
Equipment
• Portable or wall suction unit with tubing
• an appropriate size catheter (Adult: 10 F to 16 F)
• Sterile or clean gloves
• Sterile water or saline
• Towel or waterproof pad
• Water-soluble lubricant
• goggles and mask
11. Implementation
1. Check medical order for the need for suctioning
2. Identify the patient. Explain procedure to the
patient, even if the patient does not appear to be
alert.
3. Perform hand hygiene.
4. If patient is conscious, place him or her in a semi-
Fowler’s position. If patient is unconscious, place
him or her in the lateral position, facing you.
12. 5. Put on goggles and mask. Put on gloves.
6. connect tub to the suction catheter.
7. Moisten the catheter by
putting it into the container of sterile saline. Occlude
Y-tube to check suction.
13. 8. Apply lubricant to the first 5 to 7.5 cm of the
catheter.
9. Insert the catheter:
A. For nasopharyngeal suctioning, gently insert
catheter through the naris toward the trachea
.rotate the catheter between your fingers to help
advance it to reach
the pharynx.
Do not force the
catheter through
the nares.
14. b. For oropharyngeal suctioning, insert catheter
through the mouth and oropharyngeal tube
toward the trachea. Advance
the catheter to reach the pharynx.
10. Apply suction by intermittently occluding the Y-
port on the catheter with the thumb of your
nondominant hand and by dominant hand gently
rotate the catheter as it is being withdrawn.
15. Measuring the nasopharyngeal airway.
Measuring for oropharyngeal airway.
Inserting suction catheter into
endotracheal tube.
Inserting suction catheter
into endotracheal tube.
16. 11 . Do not suction for more than 10 to 15 seconds
at a time. No more than three suction episodes.
12. Flush catheter with saline.
13. Apply the oxygen and have the patient take
several deep breaths.
14. Allow at least a 30-second
to 1-minute interval if
additional suctioning is needed.
17. Exchange the nares, if repeated suctioning is
required.
17. 18. Encourage the patient to cough and deep
breathe between suctioning.
19. Suction the oropharynx after suctioning the
nasopharynx. Do not suction for more than 10 to
15 seconds at a time. No more than three suction
episodes.
20. When suctioning is completed, turn off suction,
remove gloves and equipment. Perform hand
hygiene.
21. Offer oral hygiene after suctioning.
