NATIONAL POLICY ON
EDUCATION 1986
2. The National policy of Education
(NPE) is a policy formulated by the
Government of India to promote
education amongst India’s people.
The Policy covers elementary
education to colleges in both rural
and urban India.
The first NPE was promulgated in
1968 by the government of Prime
Minister Indira Gandhi and second by
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.
3. The NPE lays special
emphasis on the
removal of disparities
and the equalisation of
educational
opportunities by
attending to the
specific needs of those
who have been denied
equality so far.
4. EDUCATION FOR WOMEN’S EQUALITY
The National Education system plays a positive
interventionist role in the empowerment of women.
Promotes Women's studies as a part of various
courses.
Priority; Removal of women’s illiteracy and their
retention in elementary education.
Major emphasis is given to women’s participation in
vocational, technical and professional education in
different levels.
5. EDUCATION OF SCHEDULED CASTES
The central focus in the Scheduled Castes educational
development is their equalization with the non-
Scheduled Caste population at all stages of education
in all areas and in all the four dimensions- rural male,
rural female, urban male, urban female.

school regularly until they reach the age of 14.
