2. What is a figure of speech
A figure of speech is a phrase or word that
is used in a different way from its usual
meaning to create a effect or picture ,The
meaning of these words or phrases
figurative and not literal . Figurative means
it has another meaning and literal means
exactly what it says .

A simile is a figure of speech that
compares two things that are
different from each other but
have similar qualities .This is
direct comparison and the word
as and like is always used.
Examples
Lisa is as bright as the sun
Daniel swims like a fish
Kate is as fast as a cheetah

5. Metaphor
A metaphor is a comparison of
two different things or ideas .
This is an indirect comparison
and the words as and like is not
used.
Examples
Peter is a lion
She had a heart of gold
Life is a dream

Personification is when in
inanimate (none living ) objects
are given human qualities
Example
Lightning danced across the sky
The wind howled in the night
My car was happy to be washed

7. Apostrophe
Apostrophe addresses a subject that is not
present ,it is absent or inanimate.
Examples
Twinkle twinkle little star how I wonder
what you are
Oh rose ,how sweet you smell and how
bright you look !

Oxymoron is used to connect
two opposite ideas .These ideas
are used in one sentence but
contrast each other .
Examples
Love hate relationship’
Bitter sweet
Living dead

9. Alliteration
Alliteration is when a series of
words that begin with the same
constantan (non vowel sound )
Examples
She sells sea shells on the sea
shore
Freds friends fried fritters for
Fridays food

Assonance is the repetition of
vowel sounds the vowels does
not need to be in the beginning
of a word
Examples
The light of the fire is a sight
He claps his hands and stamps
his feet

11. Hyperbole
Hyperbole uses exaggeration for
emphasis or effect .
Examples
I can eat a horse
She cried a river
I am freezing

12. onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia is used to express sound
Examples
The lion roared
The phone rings
The wolf howled

13. Euphemism
Euphemism is a word or term
used as a substitute to a harsh,
blunt or offensive term
Examples
Passed away ( instead of died)
Letting you go (instead of fired)

14. Irony
Irony or sarcasm are words
which mean the opposite
Example
A fire station burning down
Your hands is as clean as mud
The dinner you served was as
hot as ice

15. pun
Pun is a play on words .
Examples
Tigers do not eat clowns
because they taste funny
A bicycle can not stand on its
own cause its two tired
