2. WHAT IS MENINGITIS?
Meningitis is inflammation of the
membranesthat cover the brain and
spinal cord.
Causedbyviral or bacterial infection
Viral Meningitis is lesssevereandwill
clear up with specific treatment
Bacterial Meningitis canbequite
severeandmayresult in brain
damage,hearingloss,or learning
disabilities
Important for bacterial- one should
know which type of bacterial is
causingmeningitis....someantibiotics
canprevent sometype from spreading
andinfecting other people.
1990stype b influenza (Hib) wasthe
leadingcauseof bacterial meningitis.
The Hib vaccineis givento all children
aspart of their immunization routine.

10. HOW IS BACTERIAL MENINGITIS
DIAGNOSED?
Early diagnosisis very important
If symptoms occur,patient should
seekmedicalhelp immediately
Diagnosisis madebyretrieving
growing bacterial from asample
of the spinal fluid
Byperforming aspinal tap, spinal
fluid is obtained through a needle
Theneedleis inserted in the
lower back where the fluid in the
spinal canal canberetrieved.

11. OTHER TESTING PROCEDURES
Other Cultures- testing of
samples of blood, urine,
mucous, and/or pus from
skin infections
MRI Scan- test that uses
magnetic waves to take
pictures of structures of
inside of body (to clarify
that inflammation is not
some other cause such as a
tumor
CT Scan- a type of x-ray
that uses a computer to
make pictures of
structures inside the
body.
