Vincent van Gogh is an important historical figure. On March 30, 1853, he was born in a Dutch village called Vicarage of Groot–Zundert to
Theodorus and Anna Corlnelia van Gogh. He grew up with six siblings Theodorus, Willem, Anna, Cornelius, Elizabeth, and Willemina. Since Vincent
never had any friendships to last, he was very close with his family. Vincent's struggles in life inspired his creative genius. Although, only famous after
his death, Vincent's contributions to the art world live on. Vincent van Gogh is well known for his life, his paintings, and his influence on 20th century
art.
Throughout Vincent's life he experiences much disappointment and loneliness. In his time no one appreciated his art which kept him from supporting
himself or keeping any friends. Since he didn't have a lot of money, Vincent's brother Theodorus supported him and provided him with everything that
he needed. Vincent was very close with his parents. His dad was a preacher in the Dutch reformed church and his mother was born into a book binder
family. Vincent followed after his father and intended to be a preacher however, that didn't work out. Vincent first painted at The Mauve in The Hague.
At that time his relationship with his parents fades.
Furthermore, in the summer of 1881, he falls in love with his cousin Kate but she does not feel the same. To express his feelings he holds his hand in

others. Post–Impressionism is a period of art that was influenced by Impressionism, but the artists took their art in other directions. Van Gogh's early
period includes all his work from 1879–1885. In this period he painted The Potato Eaters, which is commonly referred to as his first important
picture. This is a period where van Gogh is trying to convey peasant life to the viewer, and he makes use of a very dark palette. He then studies at
the academy in Antwerp where he is forced to draw from plaster casts and to adopt academic principles which will affect his later works. Next came
the Paris period. There Vincent learned from virtually every major artist there. During this period he creates numerous self–portraits, still lifes, and
cityscapes. Also during this period, his style shifted from the darker manner characteristic to a post–impressionist style heavily influenced by
divisionism. Divisionism is where color is separated into dots or patches applied directly to the canvas. Then in February of 1888 began the Alres

passion for the arts in his short career, a career which only lasted ten years (Preble 117). As we know, it takes a tremendous amount of effort,
awareness and creativity to convey your emotions, thoughts and feelings through your work. Here, we will attempt to construe his feelings through

Van Gogh also used a unique technique in this work that not many other painters had attempted before his time; he used both organic and geometric
shapes. The houses in the painting are very geometrically shaped, with triangular roofs and square windows and doors. The hills, mountains and trees
however are especially organic with soft curves and round edges.
By using different sizes and proportions, Van Gogh added contrast and variety to this painting. He proportioned the tree larger than the village and
stars to show dominance, while also using a variety of elements such as the houses, wind, stars and trees to keep the viewers interest. After all keeping
our interest is one of the strengths of this work.
To interpret The Starry Night and the feelings it can provoke or evoke from oneself you can observe it from more than one point of view. It can be
perceived as a feeling of loneliness or coldness. It may also be seen as a disruption arising during a quite time or just as a sense of plenty of energy.
At a first looked at this painting you do not believe there was a significant meaning to this particular piece. After having read more on Van Gogh and
watching videos on his life we view it differently, we see it as a significant milestone in his life. In one video we watched in class it showed a scene,

Van Gogh's friend, Gauguin, would join him, but things were not going to be for the best. Towards the end of the year of 1888, a tragic accident
would cause Gaugin to leave the town of Arles. Vincent Van Gogh was going through an episode in which he charged at his friend with an open razor.

of Gauguin and also Theo had hopes that the paintings he would receive from Gauguin, in exchange for his support, would turn a profit. Unlike

Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 in Holland. Van Gogh worked various jobs before becoming a theology student in Amsterdam. But because of
both professional and personal failures Van Gogh decided to "comfort the humble" and he went to live and work in a mining community. While
working and living in the mining community Van Gogh found himself drawn more and more to art. So in 1880 Vincent moved to Brussels and then to

During the winter of 1885–86 Van Gogh studied at the academy in Antwerp, where he was forced to draw from plaster casts and to adopt academic

He began to use more primary colors instead of the dark foreboding colors from his early paintings. He also began painting solely outside which he
continued for the remainder of his life. After two years in Paris, Van Gogh and a friend, Gauguin moved to Arles. His friend did not like it there
and decided to return to Paris, this angered Van Gogh. He began to exhibit behaviors which were reminiscent of his earlier troubled years. When
Van Gogh became angry and chased Gauguin through the streets with a knife, the friend began to fear for his life. The friend refused to stay the
night in their apartment that evening and in response, Van Gogh went to a local bar and cut off his own ear which he gave to a known prostitute for
payment saying, "keep this object carefully." Van Gogh had to go to the hospital for care, and decided to commit himself to an asylum for the insane.
Here he hoped to restore his self confidence and health, but after only a short time he returned to Paris. Upon learning of his brother Theo's financial
problems and his child's health issues life was overwhelming. One afternoon in July, Van Gogh went into the garden to paint and committed suicide
with a single gunshot. His lifelong struggle with mental illness, causing him to live much of his life poor and virtually unknown, ultimately led to his
death in 1890.
