Motivation and Rationale for the Study As a former elementary school teacher and a reading specialist in an urban school setting, I have had the
opportunity to work with many English Language Learners (ELLs) in my teaching career. About 75% of my ELLs had limited English proficiency
when they first entered my classroom as first graders. I witnessed first–hand the frustration and silence of students who simply could not formulate
coherent sentences or understand texts that were being read because they were not familiar with the vocabulary and syntactic structure of the English
language. Whilst I was explicitly teaching vocabulary words prior to reading some of these texts in the classroom and then talking about the
