Earlier Knowledge – You already should be confident to…
1. Use a calculator to do division. Fractions are made from division signs.
2. Know already that percent means “out of one hundred”. You should be familiar with using % in
everyday language – like if you coach said give 100%.
3. You should know that decimals are made up of tenths, hundredths, thousands. Hundredths help
us with % as it “out of one hundred”.
This Year’s Work – You need to learn to…
1. Knowing the parts of a fraction numerator up and denominator down.
2. That fractions and decimals lie on a number line between whole numbers (remember whole
numbers are counting numbers 0, 1, 2, 3…
3. See fractions as being the same value as decimals like ¾ is the same as 0.75
4. See that percentages are the same value as decimals like 0.75 is the same as 75%
5. See that percentages are the same value as fractions like ¾ is the same as 75%.
6. Finding a percentage of an amount. Finding a fraction of an amount. E.g. what is ¾’s of 200? Or
what is 75% of 200?
7. Convert between Fractions to Decimals to Percentages and back again. This can be done on a
calculator that has a fraction button (it’s just about training you how to use it).
8. Reciprocals, inverse fractions, combining fractions.
9. Working out percentages of amounts and calculating a percentage of a whole.
10. Increasing and decreasing by a percentage.
11. Financial Maths including GST (15%), markups, discounts, simple interest methods.
You also need to start thinking about…
1. Introduction to the idea of a reciprocal fraction.
2. Introduction to the idea of an inverse fraction.
3. Finding the original amount if given the amount after a % increase.
Since this is the last topic of the year there will not be a test – rather your final grade for this topic will be
based upon your completion of the work in class (namely the completion of this booklet).
