3. Governor:
A governor, or speed limiter, is a device used to measure and
regulate the speed of a machine such as an engine.
4. Types of governor:
The governor can be classified into two parts:
1. Centrifugal governor
A. Pendulum type(watt governor)
B. Loaded type
a. Dead weight governors
Porter governor
Proell governor
b. Spring controlled governors
Hartnell governor
Hartung governor
Wilson-hartnell governor
Pickering governor
2. Inertia governor
5. Hartnell
Governor
A Hartnell governor is a spring loaded governor.
It consists of two bell crank levers pivoted.
The frame is attached to the governor spindle and
therefore rotates with it.
Each lever carries a ball at the end of vertical arm.

8. Spring design
1.Stresses in the helical
spring
2.Stresses in spring with

10. Design of spindle
It is subjected to a direct tensile load which is equal in
magnitude to the maximum spring force.it is also
subjected to a torque during starting and load changes
.this torque induced torsional shear stress in the spindle.
As the magnitude of the torque is indeterminate we
take the low value of tensile stress in the spindle and
design for the axial spring load.
11. Design of cast steel body
It is used as the casing for the spring and supports for
the fulcrum of bell crank levers
12. Design of a bell crank lever
I. Roller end:-the maximum load on the roller is half
of maximum spring force
II. Design of fulcrum pin
III. Design of the governor balls
IV. Design of the end of a ball arm
