3. What does the
HathiTrust offer?
HathiTrust Digital Library - preserves and provides access to a
collection of over 17,000,000 digitized objects.
Emergency Temporary Access Service – a response to Covid-
19 pandemic. Allows members legal access to digitized
versions of their print collections in HathiTrust for the
duration of the emergency.
HathiTrust Resource Center - offers services that support use
of the HathiTrust digital collections as a dataset for analysis
via text and data mining research.
Shared Print Program – Commits to preserving and sharing
print copies of the digitized works.
US Federal Documents Program – Participates in the
evolution of the Federal Depository Library Program.
Copyright Review Program – A review team finds and opens
public domain materials in the US and around the world.

institution, log in here.
If not, you can search the
collection without logging in. You
will be able to use materials that
are in the public domain.
Logging in as a guest also gives you
access to public domain material
and allows you to create your own
collections.

a Friend of the University of Michigan.

Collections are created from works in
the HathTrust by partner institutions or
individuals.

collection was created
by Hathitrust.

was created by an
individual affiliated with
the University of
Michigan.

13. A more focused
way to find
materials is to
do a Search
Remember, Full text leads
you to the documents and
Catalog leads you to
information about the
documents (metadata).
Remember, check Full view
only if you want only results
that you can access here in
HathiTrust.
14. Begin with a Boolean search in Searchby field.
Notice the (Search Tips) link above if you want instruction on
conducting your Search.
Notice the Additionalsearch options at the lower half of the page
that can refine your search. Check Full view only.The other limits are
optional.

When you want to revise your search (to search
within or expand it), use Revise the advanced
search button at upper left.
Do not use the Search HathiTrust at the top of
the page. It will erase your search. Use that only
when you want to begin a totally new search.
16. Create your own Collection
Public – a collection you want to share with others.
Private – a collection you prefer not to share. For example, if you
are researching in order to write an article or prepare a
presentation, you might create a collection that is a work in
progress, to save your finds in one convenient location.
REMEMBER, to find your Private collection next time you visit
HathiTrust, you need to use the same log in as when you created it.
You can create a collection by selecting materials from a Search
results page or from the E-reader. In Search results, you can add
multiple items at once. From the E-reader, you add one item at a
time.
17. Creating a Collection from Search results
Click the small box to the left of items you want to include in your collection.
Then click the Add button next to New Collection
18. In this pop-up box, give your collection a Name and a
Description. Choose Private or Public status and Save
Changes.
There’s your collection!
19. Add to your Collection from the E-reader
Scroll to the bottom of the left-hand side bar.
Choose the appropriate collection and click the Add button.
20. Click on
My Collections to
access your new
collection
Be aware that your User Name shows up as the
Collection Owner.
If your email is also User Name and you create
a Public Collection, your email will be displayed
in the site catalog.
21. For additional assistance
Use the many Help buttons at the top and bottom of the
Home page and strategically located throughout the
HathiTrust Digital Library on your screen when you are
on the website.
The Help offered by this digital library is clear and
concise.
