- Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_S._Hershey Milton Hershey. Born in 1857 in PA. Only finished the 4th grade. Through trial and error, he created his own formula for milk chocolate. The first Hershey bar was produced in 1900. Hershey's Kisses were developed in 1907, and the Hershey's Bar with almonds was introduced in 1908. He wanted to make an affordable milk chocolate bar that everyone could enjoy regardless of wealth. At the time, chocolate bars were costly and primarily enjoyed by the affluent. http://candyhalloffame.org/CHoF/inductees/2007/leo-hirshfield.shtml Leo Hirshfield immigrated from Austria and introduced Tootsie Rolls to the candy industry on February 23, 1896 from a small store in Brooklyn, NY. He named the candy after his daughter, Clara, whose nickname was Tootsie, and Leo was the first to individually wrap the candies. This novel idea revolutionized the candy industry and made Tootsie Rolls stand out among competitors’ candy because it they did not stick together and saved retailers time when trying to scoop candy from bulk containers. Hirshfield wanted to invent a chocolate that had a high melting point and did not stick together.

However as they mature and require more capital they need to solicit grander sums safely and in shorter times. The capital markets enable this.
