1 Good afternoon – I arrived here in Fort Nelson a couple of hours ago and have had a few moments to talk to some of the participants and attendees her today. It is a priviledge for TANDBERG to co – sponsor this event and showcase our technology. VideoConferencing’ origins go back over 20 years. Each of you may have your own perspective of VideoConferencing as a business tool. For early adopters of the technology - it has been a bumpy ride due to costs, reliability and network provisioning. For some of you - their may be perceived myths …and for others - the utilization may be nothing less than magical. Over the 20-30 minutes - I will provide an Industry Overview, Trends, share some customer experiences and perhaps new opportunities for your organization that you may previously not have considered.
To put our session in proper context some interesting behaviour and business facts. How much content in a conversation is really understood. It is suggested that Face to Face discussions are and the content is understood 80% of the time. On the other extreme, Telephone conversations are understood just 40% of the time. Why – If you’re like me perhaps on the phone you are multitasking – doing e-mail, signing expense reports, planning etc….and then when the other side says something that truly resonates - you ask them to rephrase or restate what they have just said. VideoConferencing is right in the midde – Does it or should it replace Face to Face conversations - NO. However, it is an effective alternative when you can’t be there or can’t afford to be there.
Now for the Business Facts – READ. These stats were gathered in a WorldCom 2000 Survey. The most intriguing one is the following; And I will let you think about If it pertains to you and your family.
3 As business leaders – and withou being presumptious, your challenges are not unlike most business organizations. You have a vision of where you want your organization to be next year and five years down the road. Underpinning this vision is the need to Bring Your products to market efficiiently and effectively. The need to deploy your resources optimally and to impart your vision through effective communication to your entire team. The absense of any one of these dynamics will seriously compromise your ability to deliver the desired results. And for the very reason you are at this conference – you are trying to figure out and develop a roadmap on what technology will provide the most benefit now and for the future. Networking and the selection of the right business communication tools are probably on your priority list.
On a Industry basis – Group VideoConferencing is expected to grow by 45% in 2001. Despite the uncertain economy we, as a company are not far off this figure. Why - most industry observers would say there are 4 dynamics causing this growth – Network Accessibility is greater than ever, Network Costs to manage VC have dramatically reduced and The actual Hardware costs have dramatically reduced. The systems that you have been exposed to this week are probably 30 –40% of what they cost but 5 years ago. There is however, another Dynamic that is supporting this exponential growth.
Customers across all verticals and segments are really beginning to understand how to use VC effectively to increase productivity and reduce costs. In a recent Business Article “NorTel” will will conduct 44,000 hours of business meetings over VC with anticipated savings in excess of $65MM. Have they always used it – Yes…but the need to leverage it has obviously become even greater.
What is necessary to have an effective meeting and how can VideoConferencing support these requirements. First – there are planned and ad-hoc meetings where all participants may be in one location or they extend to remote locations. Second – Depending on the purpose you may be required to present information with or without the assistance of different mediums. Lastly – If you are not in person the solutions must be reliable and easy to use. TANDBERG has implemented these essential components allowing your meetings to be effective to achieve your goals.

We are a publicly traded company on the Oslo Exchange. Being in the Tech sector one would naturally assume that our valuations and share price has dropped.Not the case – all key performance metrics are outperforming analysts expectations and in 2001 – TANDGERG’s share price has increased by 25%.
Our solutions range from DeskTop/ Executive solution to the Large meeting or Conference Room. What we have in front of you today is a TANDBERG 6000. The codec, which is the brains of VC is also integratable into any monitor or screen required. The basis for those decisions is dependent on the application(s) to be served by VC.
TANDBERG also has a vertical orientation and has specific products for TeleHealth and Distance Education. Our Federal Government has recognized the social value of TeleHealth and TODAY there is endowment funding available and being used by the Health Association of BC, Province of Alberta through the We//Net fund and other Provincial and State Ministries – this is leading to the rapid deployment of TANDBERG technology in remote areas, perhaps areas where many of you have sites , which allows for clinical diagnostics over VideoConference when Physicians may not be available.

Many of our Oil and Gas clients are utilizing VC for Project Management initiatives. They are finding …. The benefit are quite simply….Improved decision makaing and employee productivity. How many times have you been in a meeting where a key decisionmaker or influencer might not be present or able to attend because of travel or other commitments. Utilizing VC , at minimum presents an alternative.
For your convenience, this chart illustrates a question - that I hope many of you are asking; What is the Payback? We have found that organizations Who adopt VC can easily convert 30-40% of there meetings to VideoConferencing when participation is required from people in remote locations. Many of you have multiple locations across NA or Internationally so it is not convenient to have people travel. As such you may find yourselves making decisions when the right stakeholders are not present. The chart illustrates averages as there are always variables to consider – however If just 10 people , who often travelled , convert 30-40 % of their meetings to Video – the ROI is less than 4 months. To give you an example – a legal firm who just implemented Video – saved one of their clients $22,000 in one week. How, client was to have a discovery session. The Client was in South Africa – Frankly – it could have been Fort Nelson. Instead of the firm sending a lawyer to SA for 3 days ( Flights, Expenses, Billable Hours ) the discovery session was conducted via video – saving the client $22,000. I hope you don’t have many of these types of requirements – but If you did the savings and ROI clearly add up.
