Obsolescence Management
• Organizations are experiencing significant equipment down times and low Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) because of long
lead times or non-availability of the parts needed to repair and maintain the equipment.
• Modernization and transformation initiatives also have challenges of acquiring/predicting the devices obsolescence for better
planning
• Underlying obsolescence factors:
▪ Aging Equipment; As support for assets or components of the assets are discontinued by the suppliers, Organizations
have to constantly find new sources of support to keep the assets operational.
▪ Global Supply Chains; With the advent of Global supply chains, Components in the parts chain could be manufactured
anywhere in the world.While this creates efficiencies in terms of lowering the total cost of ownership, it also introduces
risk in the supply chain as disruption anywhere impact parts availability.
▪ Supplier Reliability; The reliability of the supply chain is key to maintaining high levels of operational availability. More
and more parts of the supply chain are now being manufactured by new companies. As some of these companies either
acquired or close operations, support for the existing components is impacted.
▪ Specialized knowledge; Often niche or specialized components are incorporated into a supply chain.The specialized
components are manufactured by niche suppliers. Special care must be taken to closely follow the risk through supplier
development activities, source expansion activities, or internal personnel development plans to limit single points of
failure.
▪ Multi Echelon Supply chains;The supply chains become extremely deep and significantly increase the vulnerability of a
single supplier affecting the complete supply chain.
