Most organisations are taking email backups by either storing their PST files, or copying the mail from their servers, or using some end point backup tool to secure their email. However, most organisations we spoke to (and these are in 100s), believe that if they are backing up mail, their data management needs are fulfilled. However this is far from the truth. Backups have a purpose, mainly for disaster recovery or full restore, and need to be done. Backups are a snapshot of the system state at a point in time. They are by nature, discontinuous point in time state captures. But Archival is all different story, as we shall see in the rest of the webinar. Archival is about a continuous live copy of every change in the system state, such that the use of data which is archived can extend beyond Backup. Backups, since they are periodic, only reflect the state of the system at that point in time, and not the changes or events leading upto that state Backups, are stored with the intention of a full restore, and are not designed to be used for any other purpose, such as selective restore, or data analysis Backups are typically taken to secondary mediums like tapes and are not always online or available instantly. Archival on other hand is a continuous copy of the data streams as the data flows, to ensure that the data is captured before it settles. Archivals are typically always online and accessible on demand. So before we move ahead; Backups are necessary as a basic IT requirement, but Archival is what you need to help your business. Lets see how.
- What is your vision when it comes to data management and data mining? Our conversations with 100’s of decision makers in enterprises across industries and sizes, shows these 3 as the fundamental common outcomes required by all organisations. - One of the most heavily worked team at Mithi is the Migration team, who, during on-boarding is always at work figuring out ways to transport legacy data from the earlier mail platform to our platform. Typically when you use an email system for a few years, a lot of email data accumulates on the email platform. To move platforms, you would need to pull out all that data from the earlier system and import it into the new system. Considering that most systems have controls in place to slow down large scale data outs, this process can take anywhere from 1 day to a few months.
