Data engineering teams love Apache Spark because it’s powerful and easy to manage, but managing a shared resource for experimental analyses and queries is very different from developing production applications in contemporary cloud environments: the gap between understanding Spark and being able to deploy and manage it in production can be vast. This session will cover a developer’s journey learning Spark and using it to develop a containerized, cloud native application with analysis and visualization components. More specifically, these topics will be covered: • Exploratory analysis in a Jupyter notebook running against an ephemeral Spark cluster • Using PySpark for loading and analyzing data from external data sources like PostgreSQL • Transforming your notebook into a cloud-native application deploying your application in containers on Kubernetes • PySpark API functionality that you didn’t know you needed. So, whether you’re an application developer or a Spark expert this session is for you. If you’re a developer wanting to deploy a spark cluster into production, this session will help guide you through techniques to make this transition easier and quicker. However, if you’re an expert, then this talk should give you some insight into how application developers work and help you to coordinate with the development team.

Abstract: Behavior driven development (BDD) is an agile method that (among others) puts the ideas of agile testing into practice. BDD emphasizes collaboration between testers, developers and the business stakeholders and help preventing bugs by introducing testers and testing concept into the specification phase. This is all fine when you start with a new, green field project. But what about those old legacy applications that have no proper automated test coverage and even if there are automated tests no one is dare to touch them? Is it possible to introduce BDD for these projects? What are the different strategies, collaboration and testing patterns that can be followed? This session gives a brief overview about what BDD is today and addresses these questions. The code examples use .NET and SpecFlow, but can be easily adapted to any other platform too.

Our industry has a problem: We are not lacking software methodologies, programming languages, tools or frameworks but we need great software engineers. Great software engineer teams build quality-in and deliver great software on a regular basis. The technical excellence of those engineers will help you escape the "Waterfall sandwich" and make your organization a little more agile, from the inception of an idea till they go live. I will talk about my experiences from the last 15 years, including small software delivery teams until big financial institutions. Why would a company like to be "agile"? How can a company achieve that? How can you achieve Technical Excellence in your software teams? What developer skills are more important than languages, methods or frameworks? This will be an interactive session with a Q&A at the end.

Today, if events change the decision model, we wait until the next batch model build for new insights. By extending fast “time-to-decisions” into the world of Big Data Analytics to get fast “time-to-insights”, apps will get what used to be batch insights in near real time. The technology enabling this includes smart in-memory data storage, new storage class memory, and products designed to do one or more parts of an analysis pipeline very well. In this talk we describe how Ampool is building on Apache Geode to allow Big Data analysis solutions to work together with a scalable smart storage class memory layer to allow fast and complex end-to-end pipelines to be built -- closing the loop and providing dramatically lower time to critical insights.

Do you remember your childhood when your mom or an older story teller pronounced the most interesting words in the world? “Once upon a time…” Let me be now your story teller, listen to my story about a legacy app, a painful problem, the search for the solution and the lucky outcome. No, no, this is not the story about a new green field project where everything is so clear. However, even in this story there is a master builder, who shows the developers how to scaffold the legacy app with BDD scenarios using SpecFlow or Cucumber and everything will be all right in the end. Let me tell you about different strategies, collaboration and testing patterns that can be followed in such a renovation-like situation. So, are you ready?... “Once upon a time there was a company where…” To be continued at my session

If offshoring is often driven by short term considerations and economical drivers, there are better reasons to externalize software development. And why not coming to Switzerland?. Over the past two years, we have reversed the offshoring flow, pursuing ambitious IT projects for US companies, from the Swiss mountains. The Agile Tour conference in Lausanne is the occasion of the lessons learned during adventures and to reflect on how we can improve the development of inhouse digital products.

Because observability is such a broad topic – and often something we learn on the job – it can feel like there’s too much to learn at once. But you don’t have to tackle everything and can start with the basics and build from there! Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack. No matter what tooling is in place, there are still observability fundamentals that developers should know. That’s why I’ve put together a primer on the different telemetry types, when to use them, how to understand the data journey, and what to look for in time series graphs.

Generative AI refers to a class of machine learning algorithms that are designed to generate new data samples that are similar to those in the training data. Unlike traditional AI models that are trained to recognize patterns and make predictions, generative AI models have the ability to create entirely new data based on the patterns they have learned. This is achieved through techniques such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), variational autoencoders (VAEs), and transformer architectures, among others.
