A. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course, "Psychology in Health Care," aims to provide an understanding of the
psychological factors that influence health and illness, promote effective communication in
healthcare settings, and incorporate mental health care into general healthcare practice. By
exploring these areas through the lens of theoretical concepts and practical case studies,
students will develop a nuanced understanding of the important role psychology plays in health
care.
B. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will be able to define key psychological concepts related to health, list the impacts of
psychological factors on physical health, and identify the ways mental health integrates into
general health care practice.
2. Students will describe the role of psychology in health care settings, discuss the importance of
effective patient-provider communication, and explain how mental health care integrates into
overall patient care.
3. Students will apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios through case studies, demonstrate
an understanding of the mind-body connection in health and disease, and use principles of patient-
centered care in hypothetical healthcare interactions.
4. Students will analyze case studies for psychological components in healthcare, compare different
approaches to managing psychological factors in patient care, and examine the impact of mental
health on overall patient wellbeing.
5. Students will design strategies for effective communication in diverse healthcare scenarios,
formulate approaches to incorporate mental health care in general healthcare settings, and
construct comprehensive care plans that take into account the psychological aspects of health and
