5. CNC Introduction
A numerical control
system in which the data
handling, control sequences,
and response to input is
determined by an on-board
computer system at the
machine tool.
6. Apllications of CNC
CNC is widely used for:-
lathe,
drill press
milling machine
grinding unit
laser
sheet-metal press
7. Elements of CNC Machine
Input Device
Machine Control Unit
Machine Tool
8. Elements of CNC Machine
Input Device:- In computing, an input device is a peripheral (piece of computer
hardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to an information
processing system such as a computer or information appliance. Examples of input
devices include keyboards, mouse, scanners, digital cameras
Machine Control Unit:- The machine control unit (MCU) is the heart of a CNC system.
It is used to perform the following functions: To read the coded instructions. To
decode the coded instructions. To implement interpolations (linear, circular, and
helical) to generate axis motion commands
Machine Tool :-machine tool is the mechanical device that perform actual machining
operation like- cutting ,drilling., facing, milling, knurling, grindin etc
9.
10. How CNC Works
Controlled by G and M codes.
These are number values and co-ordinates.
Each number or code is assigned to a particular operation.
Typed in manually to CAD by machine operators.
G & M codes are automatically generated by the computer
software.
11. Programming Key Letters
O - Program number (Used for program identification)
N - Sequence number (Used for line identification)
G - Preparatory function
X - X axis designation
Y - Y axis designation
Z - Z axis designation
R - Radius designation
F – Feed rate designation
S - Spindle speed designation
H - Tool length offset designation
D - Tool radius offset designation
T - Tool Designation
M - Miscellaneous function
12. Table of Important M codes
M00 Program stop
M01 Optional program stop
M02 Program end
M03 Spindle on clockwise
M04 Spindle on counterclockwise
M05 Spindle stop
M06 Tool change
M08 Coolant on
M09 Coolant off
M30 Program stop, reset to start
14. Cutting tools and its Characteristics
Cutting tool is a device, used to remove unwanted materials from
given work piece for carrying out the machining process, cutting tool
is fundamental and requirement
A cutting tool must have the following characteristics:
Hardness
Hot Hardness
Toughness
15. Types of Tool materials
High Speed Steel (HSS)
High Carbon Steel (HCS)
Cast Alloy
Cemented Carbide
Ceramic
Diamond
Cobalt
16.
17. Inserts
Inserts are removable cutting tips, which means they
are not brazed or welded to the tool body.
The strength of the inserts also depends upon the
shape of the inserts.
18.
19. Advantages of CNC
i. - Easier to program;
ii. - Easy storage of existing programs;
iii. - Easy to change a program
iv. - Avoids human errors
v. - CNC machines are safe to operate
vi. - higher productivity, better quality
vii. -Volume of production is very high
viii. -Less paper work
20. Disadvantage of CNC
i. -Costly setup, skilled operators
ii. - Computers, programming knowledge required
iii. - Maintenance is difficult
