Ugeshan is a Civil Engineer with a total of 16 years’ experience and more than eight years in the
mining industry, especially in the platinum mining industry. Ugeshan has been a project engineer for
more than 8 years, with extensive experience in project execution. Ugeshan specialises in the
engineering and management of civil packages from concept to completion. He is responsibility for
both mine surface and underground infrastructure, which includes civil layouts, civil and building
work packages, water and pollution management and underground construction.
Prior experience includes infrastructure upgrades and capital expenditure projects within the pulp
and paper industry, construction of port upgrades, water development projects, pipelines and
earthworks.
EXPERIENCE
Current Project Civil Engineer, WorleyParsons RSA, Johannesburg, South Africa
Proposals - Business Development: Jan 2016 to Ongoing
Due to the current economic climate many of the large scale mining projects have been deferred or
cancelled. In order to be sustainable, Ugeshan assisted our Advisian department, which undertakes
advisory and studies, to compile and lead certain energy proposal submissions. Ugeshan was
involved in providing proposals to Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana and Tanzania.
These proposals were predominately in the Energy sector for transmission lines and coal fired power
stations. He was also responsible for visiting these locations for site visits and creating stronger
Client relationships.
Project – York Potash – Feasibility Study: Jan 2015 to Dec 2015
YPL proposes to extract mineral from two deep polyhalite seams which lie beneath the North York
Moors National Park (NYMNP) and extend eastward underneath the North Sea. The dry mineral will
be won by continuous mining equipment, crushed and conveyed to underground shaft conveyances
and then transported via an underground conveyor system to the Wilton site at Teesside.
On arrival at Wilton, the polyhalite will pass through the granulation plant and be stockpiled in
storage facilities in preparation for ship loading via the new port at Teesside. The York Potash
Project will encompass the following capabilities: mineral extraction, transport and processing to the
export for both domestic and international markets.
The Mine Development Infrastructure and Facilities include the shafts and systems necessary to
support underground mining of polyhalite by the room and pillar mining method. The scope of this FS
covers the first phase of production up to 6.5 Million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), plus provision to
increase production to 13 Mtpa in the second phase.
Ugeshan took over the responsibility for managing and leading the civil and structural components of
an already initiated feasibility study. His scope of work included the surface infrastructure, the shaft
lining and underground infrastructure. At this feasibility stage, Ugeshan had to interface with a multi-

disciplined engineering team to ensure correctness of all work packages. His major responsibility
would be to co-ordinate with the design and drawing office teams, writing of technical documents,
and assisting the QS with information in compiling BOQ’s.
Project – Impala 17 Shaft – Implementation: June 2008 to June 2015
Impala Platinum awarded TWP heritage the full EPCM contract for its largest fourth generation shaft
systems. Impala 17 shaft is an ore tonnage replacement project which boasts one of the world’s
tallest headgears, ground mounted koepe winders which will be used in the sinking and permanent
configurations. The shaft complex itself comprises of four shafts, the main shaft going to 1922m,
ventilation shaft 1704m, refrigeration shaft 1400m and BAC shaft 45m. The shaft system will mine
both the Merensky and UG2 ore body. The projected cost is estimated at R16 Billion over a 10 year
period.
Ugeshan is responsible for all aspects of the surface and underground civil infrastructure, where his
responsibilities included co-ordination with the client, engineering manager and engineers of other
disciplines to ensure adherence to project and client requirements and specifications. Within his
portfolio he is directly responsible to manage both the head office function of design, drawing and
documentation and the site interface of contractor management. Ugeshan also managed projects
outside his discipline when he managed the turnkey fridge plant and ventilation package. He has
also taken the lead in managing the underground quality systems, reviewing of the site civil
engineering processes, equipment and infrastructure.
Currently still assisting Impala on various engineering related issues on the mines.
2006 - 2008 Senior Site Engineer, Basil Read, Durban, South Africa
Projects:
Pier 1 Durban Harbour upgrade
Khangela Bridge
Basil Read was awarded a multi-million rand contract to upgrade the existing ports and associated
infrastructure at Durban Harbour.
Ugeshan was responsible for managing the construction process under his supervision which
included survey and setting out, procurement, formwork erection, casting of concrete, management
of labour, daily construction targets, manage the schedule and cost, safety and quality within his
section, inspection and sign-off of all construction works and handover to the Client.
On all projects, his duties included client & project team liaison, internal project interface, site team
and sub-contractor management which included mechanical and electrical installers, demolition,
coring and earthwork contractors.
Structures that Ugeshan was involved in were the construction of concrete crane beams, concrete
floor slabs, sub-stations, retaining walls, pre cast beams, bridge piers and abutments.
