1. Robot
The first commercial, digital and programmable robot was built by George Devol in
1954 and was named the Unimate. It was sold to General Motors in 1961 where it
was used to lift pieces of hot metal from die casting machines at the Inland Fisher
Guide Plant in the West Trenton section of Ewing Township, New Jersey.
A robot is a machine - especially one programmable by a computer-capable of
carrying out
a complex series of actions automatically. Robots
can be guided by an external control device or the
control may be embedded within. Robots may
be constructed to take on human form but
most robots are machines designed to perform
a task with no regard to how they look.

3. Inventor
• David Franklin Hanson Jr. is an American designer and entrepreneur,
responsible for the creation of a series of realistic facial-expression producing
humanoid robots. In the 1980s, Hanson spent two years studying at the
University of North Texas in Denton .In 1992, he was accepted into the BFA
program at Rhode Island School of Design
in Providence .He received his Ph.D. in
aesthetic studies and interactive arts and
engineering from the University of Texas at
Dallas in spring of 2007.
4. Capabilities
Sophia is conceptually similar to the computer program ELIZA, which was one of
the first attempts at simulating a human conversation .The software has been
programmed to give prewritten responses to specific questions or phrases, like a
chatbot
Reception in the scientific community
Sophia is often presented to the public in a way that theatrically overstates its
level of general intelligence; according to Quartz, experts who have reviewed the
robot's open-source code State that Sophia is best
categorized as a chatbot with a face
5. Events
Sophia has been interviewed in the same manner as a human, striking up
conversations with hosts. Some replies have been nonsensical, while others
have impressed interviewers such as 60 Minutes' Charlie Rose. In a piece for
CNBC, when the interviewer expressed
concerns about robot behavior,
Sophia joked that he had "been
reading too much
Elon Musk. And watching too many
Holly ood o ies
6. Sophia IN India At IIT Bombay
Sophia, a lifelike robot and the first one to be granted citizenship of a country, made its first appearance in India at Indian
Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) during its cultural extravaganza, TechFest
Draped in a sari, the humanoid robot had a 15-minute conversation with a student in front of an audience of more than
3,000, on topics ranging from artificial intelligence to the issues facing the world. However, after answering a few initial
questions, Sophia went silent due to an unexplained technical snag. It started functioning again after the organisers
intervened.
However, five minutes into the conversation, the robot fell silent and stopped responding to questions, much to the
disappointment of the audience. The organisers did t pro ide a e pla atio for the glit h e ept that it as a i ter et

The presence of Sophia had created much buzz among students
and technology enthusiasts who thronged to IIT-B s o o atio
hall in large numbers. The excitement among more than 3,000
attendees was palpable, as they waited for the first appearance of
the robot modelled on Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn
event began after a 45-minute delay. When asked about its maiden
India trip, the ro ot replied, “I ha e always wanted to visit India.
I heard so much about this vibrant land of tradition and culture.
Indians have made contributions towards Silicon Valley. I am always
