Belina Bits is a snack food company dedicated to providing a healthy
protein alternative in the form of granola balls. We bring the African
delicacy of mopane worms to western audiences to show how
delicious alternative protein choices can be!
Belina Bits brings energy and liveliness for kids on the go by
delivering tasty snacks from a sustainable source. We want to think
critically about what is in store for everyone’s future.This is why we
initiate cross cultural trade to bring quality ingredients and mix it
with an exiting snack experience.
The purpose of this project is to help introduce the new generations
of people to the idea of having insects in our diet. With global cli-
mate change impacting our way of life, sustainable food sourcing is
becoming more and more relevant to everyone. Providing a fun and
nutritious snack to children in the form of insects can be the key to
adapting to our changing environment.

LILY
PAD
Biomimicry
The lily pad is an aquatic herb that lives on the surface of shallow waters such as
ponds or swamps.They are visually known for their round, circular leaves with a
single radial notch.The leaves can also be found alongside floating flowers that
come in a variety of colors.
What is it?
The object is a swiveling lily pad chair made with an ottoman. It is high end
lounge furniture designed byTerry Crews.The chair borrows many of the elements
that can found in the common lily pad.
Inspiration!
The palette incorporates the green and blues found in the lily pad’s environment.
The round shape is much like the lily pad’s leaves.The chair itself rotates around,
mimicking the free flow of the leaf movement when it is no longer attached to the
stem. It’s short, small legs give the illusion of floating.
Significance
The luxury chair modifies the concept of a frog laying on a lily pad. Using the
round features found in nature, the designers were able to optimize this sitting
experience.The floating short legs of the chair emphasize its roots and adds to the
floating on water imagery. By mimicking these elements, the designers are able to
use the chair to convey a similar feeling to floating on a lily pad as carefree as
a frog.

biomimicry the mopane worm
The mopane worm itself are commonly found on the
African mopane tree.The package design took inspira-
tion from qualities that many trees share. Animals such
as volves, rabbits, and certain insects take advantage of
a tree’s protective root structure to store food between
it.This element of tree trunks inspired the idea of the
packaging’s dispenser like function.
The mopane worm is actually a caterpillar that is a com-
mon delicacy amongst people in South Africa.They have
vibrant spots covering its body along with black spikes
and white hairs.They are commonly naturally sun dried
and have a crisp texture to them.They have an earthy
flavor and can occasionally taste like tea leaves due to
the left over leaves still in their bodies. With this in mind,
the mopane worm is able to naturally blend in with the
common elements found in granola snacks.

From the beginning, the intended audience
was meant to be children around elementary
school aged. With this in mind, the logo design
took on many mascot like forms.The design
needed to be friendly so many of the sketches
had soft, curvy lines.
Belina is the second part of the mopane
worm’s scientific name.This was chosen since
it was short, simple, and sweet! It was easy to
say and was spelled the way it sounds. Even if
the target audience would not understand the
reference, the name is unique and can be
easily recognized.

This phase mainly explored the idea of combining
the round shapes made for children with a suitable
color palette.The three light pastel colors are based
off the most prevalent colors found on the original
mopane worm.The shape was meant to resemble
the sun, since the mopane worm is typically served
as a sun dried treat.
However, the logo’s colors were too child like and
felt as if they were meant for pre school aged chil-
dren instead.The shapes also did not read very
clearly as the sun or the worm. But, this phase of
the logo was still able to achieve a fun, approach-
able look.

The finalized logo directly changes a lot based off of
the weaknesses of the last iteration.The colors are now
darker, giving it the ability to appeal to kids who want to
avoid designs that are too immature for their age.The
mopane worm itself is now more recognizable. While
bugs may be a turn off for many in food contexts, ab-
stracting the worm in a softer and friendlier form helps
the audience distance themselves from the real insect.
The logo also uses more negative space inside of the
different colors to bring more visual interest.
The font is big and bulky, making it easy to read in the
three main colors.The sans serif font makes the logo
seem modern while having a big sense of presence.The
negative space inside of the letters are able to parallel
the same negative space found in the upper half of
the logo.

The proportions of each section need to be intact
to maintain visual clarity and emphasize the bulky,
grand nature of the logo.The logo type should al-
ways stay below the mopane worm to continue with
the motif of vertical objects.

The Belina Bits logo can be used in chosen singular solid
colors.The logo can also be represented in negative
space using solid color.The mopane worm section of the
logo can stand alone by itself.
However, the logo cannot be skewed, or compressed.
The mopane worm must always be straight and upright
above the Belina Bits logo type. It can only be used with
five specific colors and should not be placed next to the
logotype.

color and typography
The colors palette is made from a darkened version of the
three primary colors.They reflect the fun vibrancy found on
the original mopane worm.These are the only colors that
are permitted to be used as a part of Belina Bit’s Brand iden-
tity.
The logotype is derived from Gill Sans Ultra Bold Con-
densed.The heading is a variation called Gill Sans MT Bold.
In the situation where subheadings are needed, bahnschrift
reulgar should be used.The body also uses a sans serif, this
one being Universe LT std 55 Roman.

pattern sketches
The Belina Bits pattern evolved greatly from directly
using the literal form of the mopane worm into ab-
stracting just the dots and hairs found on it instead.

Once again, the three primary colors put together
with black are used.The pattern is symmetrical
and creates multiple circles in the negative space
without looking too bubbly.The pattern never has
sections of the circles or triangles split in half.The
shape of the pattern is implied by which chunks
of it are removed.

letterhead
The letter head’s main function is to be readable by
those who receive it. Overall, the design needed to be
on the more simpler side. However, to add Belina Bits’
unique touch to the page, the logo is located on the top
left to give immediate clarity and there are three en-
larged circles in the main brand colors at the bottom.
The back of the letterhead has a mostly transparent ver-
sion of the pattern.

envelope business cards
The front side of the envelope has all the important ship-
ping information paired with the logo on the top left and
another semi transparent version of the pattern on the
bottom left.The pattern should not extend any further as
to not interfere with the postal process.
The back envelop flap uses three large half circles made
the brand colors to bring a bit of flare the letter.
The business cards come in the three different colors of
the brand.To continue to round, friendly motif the busi-
ness cards are 2x2inch circles.This gives it a sense of
uniqueness and will stand out inside of a wallet.

MARKETING
merchandise
The available merchandise will mainly consist of stickers
and t-shirts. Stickers are very easy to hand out in bulk
and are appealing to younger audiences who may stick
them in places such as notebooks, phones, or reusable
water bottles.
The shirts will have a large version of the logo out in
front.The visibility will help increase recognition.

advertising
Billboards in foot traffic heavy areas will be de-
ployed.These include outdoor areas such as strip
malls.The sign will have the logo surrounded by
floating dots.
The transportation truck will have similar imagery
on back and side of the container.The simple graph-
ic is meant to catch the eyes of children in the back-
seat of their parent’s car.

NEEDS
This package needs to be on the market to help in-
troduce the new generations of people to the idea of
having insects in our diet. With global climate change
impacting our way of life, sustainable food sourcing is
becoming more and more relevant to everyone. Pro-
viding a fun and nutritious snack to children in the form
of insects can be the key to adapting to our changing
environment.This design would also help support inter-
national trade between the US and South Africa, where
the main part of the product is from. By normalizing
mopane worms into the snack market, people in South
Africa providing the worms would be able to grow finan-
cially.The package becomes a need since it’s complet-
able nature is needed on the granola market that is filled
with plastic bags.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The goal of this project is to create a recognizable and
approachable brand that would normalize eating the
mopane worm.To achieve this, the packaging design
aims to utilize irregular shapes and interactivity to bring
people to the product. What will make this packaging
different from the competitors is that it will appeal to a 27
modern child’s sense of sophistication while still hav-
ing a whimsical touch.The packaging will be made out
of compost-able paper and the inside will be lined with
PLA plastic to protect the granola inside.
PROJECT STRATEGY
The packaging of this product will fully utilize the space
inside without needing to have extra air for protection.
Many granola products come in plastic or other recycla-
ble materials. However this package will make it easy
to reduce waste by making the entire package com-
postable.
BACKGROUND
There are many granola ball products on the market.
They aren’t as effective as many of them use the same
colors and packaging type. Often times they use brown,
natural colors inside plain boxes or resalable bags.This
forces children to repackage them in smaller containers
when they want to only have a smaller portion. What
makes my product better is that it uses more rounded
packaging and that each box can be taken around by
itself.There leaves no need for parents or kids to transfer
the materials to a different bag.

AUDIENCE
The main audience consists of elementary school stu-
dents from ages 5 to 10 years old.They would mainly
consist of middle class people found in suburban lo-
cations.This product also aims for children who are on
the go for most of their day and do many extra circulars
such as sports.
The secondary audience would be the parents of said
children.The product further tries to appeal to the sub-
urban middle class parent who is looking for a healthier
alternative to pack in their child’s lunch. Similar to the
kids, these parents are always on the go and may not al-
ways have time to carefully prepare a well-made lunch.
They may pay more attention to nutritional content and
compare it to many different products.

To imitate the tree like structures, the package would
be in the shape of a tube.The dimensions were also
meant to be easy to carry by those with smaller
hands.To make the overall experience more interac-
tive, the user would have to slide the tube open to
discover a small hole at the bottom.
The paper has to be at a perfect weight of 80lbs. Oth-
erwise the package would be too flimsy or be too still
be difficult to assemble.

To put together the package the top tube would need to have the colored sections of the logo cut out. After that the
PLA plastic lining can be attached on the inside and the tube can be glued together.The disk with tabs can be glued
into the top opening of the first tube to give it structure. Next, the disk with a logo is glued on top of the previous
one to improve its presentation.The bottom opening is then lined with two strips of mycellium leather.
The second tube can be cut out and put together.The tabs located at the bottom are glued to the smaller blue disk.
On the inside, the blue rectangle is glued to the base to give a slide to easily have the granola slide out.The two
larger rectangles are attached back to back and then once again attached to the base. PLA fasteners are attached to
the sides of the lower tube.

The final Belina Bits package is displayed with the logo
facing forwards on the shelves.They should be lined up
side by side and can be stacked on top of each other if
needed.The product is to be displayed on lower shelves
to make it easier to get a good view on the packaging.

Belina Bits aims to open up the insect food market to
the new upcoming generations of on the go snack eat-
ers.The purpose of this project is to utilize marketing
and brand design to provide a fun, sustainable source
of food while fulfilling our modern needs.The designer
behind Belina Bits is responsible for crafting the ideal
experience for our audience.
YEAR 1
Belina Bits will launch by opening pop up stores in the
bay area where there will be many people who will
come see the product.The stores include spaces such
like kiosks in malls, farmer’s market booths, and grocery
store sampling tables.To reach the younger audience,
sponsored posts on Instagram and Facebook advertising
the product would increase the overall visibility.
YEAR 4
All the merchandise will be made available on an online
store that can be accessed by both retailers and custom-
ers alike.This store would be able to ship exclusive fla-
vors and merchandise across the nation. All marketing
activities will continue and more advertisements such
as billboards and posters will be put up in population
dense areas in the coast.
YEAR 2
In the second year Belina Bits will expand to being more
widely available grocery stores such as Safeway,Target,
and Costco.This will make it easy for middle class audi-
ences to have access to the product and become familiar
with it.To further promote this expansion, merchandise
such as stickers and t-shirts will become available
to customers.
YEAR 3
	
Belina Bits will then move to expanding into
more retail stores along the west coast in areas
such as LA, Seattle, and Portland. During this ex-
pansion, the company will also explore different
flavor options and release side by side with the
original flavor.
Currently, most granola bit products are packaged in
family sized, zippable plastic bags.This prevents many
from easily taking the product on the go without possi-
bly expending on more single use baggies.The Belina
Bit’s packaging uses compostable material and its small
vertical packaging makes it easy to be environmental-
ly conscious and to take anywhere.The package’s tube
shape slides up to reveal a dispensing hole that makes it
easier to share. Belina Bits gives busy parents a chance
to breathe easy when packing their children’s lunch. It
also gives these children a new sense of excitement and
discovery for their snacking experience.
Belina Bits’s objectives begin with opening pop up
stores located in heavy foot traffic spaces in the bay
area.The stores would be supported by sponsored so-
cial media posts on Instagram and Facebook aimed to-
wards people located in the bay area.The next year the
company will move onto shelving the product in middle
class food retail stores around Northern California.The
designers will also concentrate on creating merchan-
dise such as stickers and shirts to gain more exposure.
In the third year, Belina Bits will continue to expand on
the west. During this time different flavor variants will be
tested and released to the newly exposed retail stores.
Finally, as demand increases national shipping will be-
come available to increase the awareness.This would be
facilitated through online means for both retailers and
customers to use

meetings with filed progress reports will be discussed
and analyzed as a team. Sales data from in-store and
online purchases will be consistently tracked to prepare
for the next marketing action. Each purchase will come
with an optional survey found at the bottom of the pack-
age where customers can fill out the form in exchange
for small rewards. The CEO and higher management
will oversee the evaluation of each step and make the fi-
nal decisions on behalf of the company. Success will be
measured by how much the company is able to utilize its
information in the application of sales and profit.

  • 7. about us 1 mission statement project purpose Belina Bits is a snack food company dedicated to providing a healthy protein alternative in the form of granola balls. We bring the African delicacy of mopane worms to western audiences to show how delicious alternative protein choices can be! Belina Bits brings energy and liveliness for kids on the go by delivering tasty snacks from a sustainable source. We want to think critically about what is in store for everyone’s future.This is why we initiate cross cultural trade to bring quality ingredients and mix it with an exiting snack experience. The purpose of this project is to help introduce the new generations of people to the idea of having insects in our diet. With global cli- mate change impacting our way of life, sustainable food sourcing is becoming more and more relevant to everyone. Providing a fun and nutritious snack to children in the form of insects can be the key to adapting to our changing environment.

LILY PAD Biomimicry The lily pad is an aquatic herb that lives on the surface of shallow waters such as ponds or swamps.They are visually known for their round, circular leaves with a single radial notch.The leaves can also be found alongside floating flowers that come in a variety of colors. What is it? The object is a swiveling lily pad chair made with an ottoman. It is high end lounge furniture designed byTerry Crews.The chair borrows many of the elements that can found in the common lily pad. Inspiration! The palette incorporates the green and blues found in the lily pad’s environment. The round shape is much like the lily pad’s leaves.The chair itself rotates around, mimicking the free flow of the leaf movement when it is no longer attached to the stem. It’s short, small legs give the illusion of floating. Significance The luxury chair modifies the concept of a frog laying on a lily pad. Using the round features found in nature, the designers were able to optimize this sitting experience.The floating short legs of the chair emphasize its roots and adds to the floating on water imagery.   • 10. biomimicry the mopane worm The mopane worm itself are commonly found on the African mopane tree.The package design took inspira- tion from qualities that many trees share. Animals such as volves, rabbits, and certain insects take advantage of a tree’s protective root structure to store food between it.This element of tree trunks inspired the idea of the packaging’s dispenser like function. The mopane worm is actually a caterpillar that is a com- mon delicacy amongst people in South Africa.They have vibrant spots covering its body along with black spikes and white hairs.They are commonly naturally sun dried and have a crisp texture to them.They have an earthy flavor and can occasionally taste like tea leaves due to the left over leaves still in their bodies. With this in mind, the mopane worm is able to naturally blend in with the common elements found in granola snacks.
  • 13. initial sketches 7 From the beginning, the intended audience was meant to be children around elementary school aged. With this in mind, the logo design took on many mascot like forms.The design needed to be friendly so many of the sketches had soft, curvy lines. Belina is the second part of the mopane worm’s scientific name.This was chosen since it was short, simple, and sweet! It was easy to say and was spelled the way it sounds. Even if the target audience would not understand the reference, the name is unique and can be easily recognized.

C 58 M 0 Y 13 K 0 C 0 M 80 Y 69 K 0 C 9 M 15 Y 88 K 0 secondary phase This phase mainly explored the idea of combining the round shapes made for children with a suitable color palette.The three light pastel colors are based off the most prevalent colors found on the original mopane worm.The shape was meant to resemble the sun, since the mopane worm is typically served as a sun dried treat. However, the logo’s colors were too child like and felt as if they were meant for pre school aged chil- dren instead.The shapes also did not read very clearly as the sun or the worm. But, this phase of the logo was still able to achieve a fun, approach- able look. 9

  • 17. final logo The finalized logo directly changes a lot based off of the weaknesses of the last iteration.The colors are now darker, giving it the ability to appeal to kids who want to avoid designs that are too immature for their age.The mopane worm itself is now more recognizable. While bugs may be a turn off for many in food contexts, ab- stracting the worm in a softer and friendlier form helps the audience distance themselves from the real insect. The logo also uses more negative space inside of the different colors to bring more visual interest. The font is big and bulky, making it easy to read in the three main colors.The sans serif font makes the logo seem modern while having a big sense of presence.The negative space inside of the letters are able to parallel the same negative space found in the upper half of the logo. 11 3.37x 5.02x 2.37x 2.27x 0.46x 0.32x 0.18x 0.72x
  • 19. logo specifications The proportions of each section need to be intact to maintain visual clarity and emphasize the bulky, grand nature of the logo.The logo type should al- ways stay below the mopane worm to continue with the motif of vertical objects.   • 20. logo usage inappropriate usage The Belina Bits logo can be used in chosen singular solid colors.The logo can also be represented in negative space using solid color.The mopane worm section of the logo can stand alone by itself. However, the logo cannot be skewed, or compressed. The mopane worm must always be straight and upright above the Belina Bits logo type. It can only be used with five specific colors and should not be placed next to the logotype.

The logotype is derived from Gill Sans Ultra Bold Con- densed.The heading is a variation called Gill Sans MT Bold. In the situation where subheadings are needed, bahnschrift reulgar should be used.The body also uses a sans serif, this one being Universe LT std 55 Roman.   • 22. pattern sketches The Belina Bits pattern evolved greatly from directly using the literal form of the mopane worm into ab- stracting just the dots and hairs found on it instead.
  • 23. final pattern Once again, the three primary colors put together with black are used.The pattern is symmetrical and creates multiple circles in the negative space without looking too bubbly.The pattern never has sections of the circles or triangles split in half.The shape of the pattern is implied by which chunks of it are removed. 17

  • 26. letterhead The letter head’s main function is to be readable by those who receive it. Overall, the design needed to be on the more simpler side. However, to add Belina Bits’ unique touch to the page, the logo is located on the top left to give immediate clarity and there are three en- larged circles in the main brand colors at the bottom. The back envelop flap uses three large half circles made the brand colors to bring a bit of flare the letter. The business cards come in the three different colors of the brand.To continue to round, friendly motif the busi- ness cards are 2x2inch circles.This gives it a sense of uniqueness and will stand out inside of a wallet.   • 33. creative brief NEEDS This package needs to be on the market to help in- troduce the new generations of people to the idea of having insects in our diet. With global climate change impacting our way of life, sustainable food sourcing is becoming more and more relevant to everyone. Pro- viding a fun and nutritious snack to children in the form of insects can be the key to adapting to our changing environment.This design would also help support inter- national trade between the US and South Africa, where the main part of the product is from. By normalizing mopane worms into the snack market, people in South Africa providing the worms would be able to grow finan- cially.The package becomes a need since it’s complet- able nature is needed on the granola market that is filled with plastic bags. PROJECT OBJECTIVE The goal of this project is to create a recognizable and approachable brand that would normalize eating the mopane worm.To achieve this, the packaging design aims to utilize irregular shapes and interactivity to bring people to the product. What will make this packaging different from the competitors is that it will appeal to a 27 modern child’s sense of sophistication while still hav- ing a whimsical touch.The packaging will be made out of compost-able paper and the inside will be lined with PLA plastic to protect the granola inside. PROJECT STRATEGY The packaging of this product will fully utilize the space inside without needing to have extra air for protection. Many granola products come in plastic or other recycla- ble materials. However this package will make it easy to reduce waste by making the entire package com- postable. BACKGROUND There are many granola ball products on the market. They aren’t as effective as many of them use the same colors and packaging type. Often times they use brown, natural colors inside plain boxes or resalable bags.This forces children to repackage them in smaller containers when they want to only have a smaller portion. What makes my product better is that it uses more rounded packaging and that each box can be taken around by itself.There leaves no need for parents or kids to transfer the materials to a different bag. MESSAGE Belina Bits brings energy and liveliness for kids on the go by delivering tasty snacks from a sustainable source. We want to think critically about what is in store for everyone’s future.This is why we initiate cross cultural trade to bring quality ingredients and mix it with an exit- ing snack experience. AUDIENCE The main audience consists of elementary school stu- dents from ages 5 to 10 years old.They would mainly consist of middle class people found in suburban lo- cations.This product also aims for children who are on the go for most of their day and do many extra circulars such as sports. The secondary audience would be the parents of said children.The product further tries to appeal to the sub- urban middle class parent who is looking for a healthier alternative to pack in their child’s lunch. Similar to the kids, these parents are always on the go and may not al- ways have time to carefully prepare a well-made lunch. They may pay more attention to nutritional content and compare it to many different products.

  • 35. prototypes To imitate the tree like structures, the package would be in the shape of a tube.The dimensions were also meant to be easy to carry by those with smaller hands.To make the overall experience more interac- tive, the user would have to slide the tube open to discover a small hole at the bottom. The paper has to be at a perfect weight of 80lbs. Oth- erwise the package would be too flimsy or be too still be difficult to assemble. 29
  • 36. structure and assembly To put together the package the top tube would need to have the colored sections of the logo cut out. After that the PLA plastic lining can be attached on the inside and the tube can be glued together.The disk with tabs can be glued into the top opening of the first tube to give it structure. Next, the disk with a logo is glued on top of the previous one to improve its presentation.The bottom opening is then lined with two strips of mycellium leather. The second tube can be cut out and put together.The tabs located at the bottom are glued to the smaller blue disk. On the inside, the blue rectangle is glued to the base to give a slide to easily have the granola slide out.The two larger rectangles are attached back to back and then once again attached to the base. PLA fasteners are attached to the sides of the lower tube.
