Two Minute Analysis: Friday the
         13th (1980)

Friday the 13th is an American horror film
about a killer going around killing camp
counsellors who are trying to reopen a
summer camp at which a child once drowned
                             at.

Sound & Editing
                      Sound Editing
Synchronous, parallel car engine sound as it drives Cuts from establishing pan to mid shot woman in
past in establishing pan. car then cuts back to another establishing pan back
to mid shot of woman in car.
Between the woman’s dialogue there is quick bits of
non-diegetic, tense orchestral music. The music gets Backward eye line match – a silver post box then a
more regular and has horns playing an accented shot of character looking back out of window.
                  deranged note.
Several cuts in the forest to keep track of woman

would be non-diegetic as it is synchronous. Cut to driver’s feet then back to woman running
                                                                                away.
The tense orchestral music gets deeper the closer

woman falls over at the killers feet.

Slashing sound effects are used in the music but not
                    diegetically.
Analysis
The scene openings with an establishing pan of a dark green 4x4 jeep speeding down a concrete road,
surrounded by a dark green forest. This shot allows the audience to note that the first bit of this film could be
set in a forest environment away from a busy city. The establishing pan cuts to a mid-shot of a female in her
early twenties in the passenger seat of the car. The camera has a hand held movement as it is suppose to
represent the point of view of the driver who we have not seen yet. The female character has mid length
brown, curly hair and is dressed in a multi-coloured chequered shirt and denim jeans. We wouldn’t see her as
vulnerable as the clothes she is wearing could suggest she is practical whereas a vulnerable person may be
wearing really expensive, fashionable clothes and wear a lot of make-up. As soon as the female states to the
driver, who we would assume are friends by the way the female looks happy and chatty, that he has gone past
the place they were meant to go – a sharp, intense non-diegetic orchestral chord strikes which shows that the
driver has purposely drove past the destination. The music becomes more constant as the scene goes on.
There is another establishing pan from right to left of the jeep driving down the road. The woman decides that
the driver is not trust as he has not said anything and is driving fast. We then get a mid-long shot from outside
the car of the woman jumping out. The next thing we hear is a synchronous sound of the jeep halting to a
stop. There is a hand held point of view of the driver driving back towards where the woman jumped out.
There is a quick pan of the woman as she gets up which then cuts into a long shot of her running into the
forest. The lighting is natural in the forest and it is daytime so we can easily see the woman running through
the forest. The tense, orchestral music gets deeper as she slows down which indicates the driver is going to
catch up with her but a few seconds later the music stops. A low of shot of the woman looking around to spot
the driver make it more tense as the audience cannot see behind or around her. The woman runs a little bit
more but trips over at the drivers feet in which the music strikes back in. The high angle looking down at the
woman also shows a close up of her face in which she is looking terrified. She slowly backs up against a tree
begging for the driver not to hurt her but we see him raise the knife to her throat. We don’t hear a diegetic
slashing sound but we hear slashing sounds within the non-diegetic music. We actually don’t see her throat
being cut directly but the see a close up of her face and neck, which her neck is pouring out with blood.

  • 5. Analysis The scene openings with an establishing pan of a dark green 4x4 jeep speeding down a concrete road, surrounded by a dark green forest. This shot allows the audience to note that the first bit of this film could be set in a forest environment away from a busy city. The establishing pan cuts to a mid-shot of a female in her early twenties in the passenger seat of the car. The camera has a hand held movement as it is suppose to represent the point of view of the driver who we have not seen yet. The female character has mid length brown, curly hair and is dressed in a multi-coloured chequered shirt and denim jeans. We wouldn’t see her as vulnerable as the clothes she is wearing could suggest she is practical whereas a vulnerable person may be wearing really expensive, fashionable clothes and wear a lot of make-up. The music becomes more constant as the scene goes on. There is another establishing pan from right to left of the jeep driving down the road. The woman decides that the driver is not trust as he has not said anything and is driving fast. We then get a mid-long shot from outside the car of the woman jumping out. The next thing we hear is a synchronous sound of the jeep halting to a stop. There is a hand held point of view of the driver driving back towards where the woman jumped out. There is a quick pan of the woman as she gets up which then cuts into a long shot of her running into the forest. The lighting is natural in the forest and it is daytime so we can easily see the woman running through the forest. The tense, orchestral music gets deeper as she slows down which indicates the driver is going to catch up with her but a few seconds later the music stops. A low of shot of the woman looking around to spot the driver make it more tense as the audience cannot see behind or around her. The woman runs a little bit more but trips over at the drivers feet in which the music strikes back in. The high angle looking down at the woman also shows a close up of her face in which she is looking terrified. She slowly backs up against a tree begging for the driver not to hurt her but we see him raise the knife to her throat. We don’t hear a diegetic slashing sound but we hear slashing sounds within the non-diegetic music. We actually don’t see her throat being cut directly but the see a close up of her face and neck, which her neck is pouring out with blood.
