Today we are going to learn about bats! Can anyone tell me something about bats that they already know? (Accept volunteers). Ok, now let’s learn a little more!
First, who can tell me what a “myth” is? (Accept volunteers). Here are some things that many people believe are true about bats, even though they are not. First, it is not true that bats are blind. They have slightly poor eyesight, but are not blind. Second, bats do not suck blood! Some bats, like the vampire bat, will take a tiny bit of blood from animals, but never humans. Last, bats will neither bite people nor turn them into vampires! People believe this from watching fictional movies and reading fictional books. Now, let’s talk about bat truths!
Here is some true information about bats. Bats are mammals. What are some characteristics of mammals? (Accept volunteers). Since bats can’t see well, they use echo-location. They let out a high-pitched noise with echoes off of objects like food or trees. Bats can tell where the certain object is. Most bats eat bugs and berries! Last, bats like to sleep hanging upside-down, like in this picture! Any questions?
I hope you learned a little bit about bats today! Let’s review what we learned by writing our favorite myth OR truth from the presentation. We will share when we’re done!
