PRESENT EMPLOYMENT:
First Response Advisor (First Response)
First Response, Floor 3 , The Bridewell, Rupert Street, Bristol BS1 2AA
DUTIES: First Response
I commenced work for First Response on 04/04/13, initially for the pilot project until it
became city wide. The role entails taking referrals from agencies and members of
the public. Putting them on a database, assessing need and criteria and whether or
not it needs to be sign posted elsewhere or is a referral for Early Help or Children's
and Young Peoples Services. First Response has been developed as part of the
`Children First Programme’ to enable children and young people be safe and
achieve their potential.
Duties include taking details from the referrers, assessing need using a similar tool to
the assessment triangle. Liaison with other agencies to gain intelligence and
information about the referred family in order to build up a picture of the needs of the
family. This involves adhering to data protection and ensure that when other
agencies refer, they have informed the family and obtained their consent to share
information. I also assess whether or not the concerns raised would meet Children’s
& Young Peoples Services threshold or if a referral to Early Help is needed. If the
identified need does not reach the threshold I will look at alternative methods to
assist the person and signpost according.
In order to assess which service is most appropriate for the referred family, I also
speak to parents to discuss concerns and gain permission to speak to other
agencies involved with the family and give advice to parents/families where
necessary with the primary aim of safeguarding and ensuring the child or young
person’s well being as the main priority. I provide advice to professionals from other
agencies when they ring wanting to know if a situation would meet the threshold for
Children’s & Young People’s Services or Early Help.
First Response share an office with the Police Safeguarding Co-ordination Unit and
we share information and work closely together to safeguard vulnerable children.
I liaise with the Big Word Translation Service, so that I am able to talk with or write
to people whose first language is not English, thus enabling them to receive advice
and guidance accordingly. From time to time we have referrals regarding children
2. with special needs, so at times, I will liaise with our Disabled Children’s Team to
establish if they are in a position to provide a service to the family.
