5. Week 3 Overview
• Biblical Inerrancy - What will you believe?
• Gen 6-9 - The flood
• Gen 11 – Babel
• Observation
• Interpretation
• Conclusions
• Application
6. Inerrancy of Scripture
• If all scripture is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
and God cannot lie (Hebrews 6:17-19) then the bible
must be 100% true
• 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NASB) 16 All Scripture is inspired by
God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for
correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the
man of God may be adequate, equipped for every
good work.
• 2 Peter 1:20-21 (NASB) 20 But know this first of all, that
no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own
interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an
act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit
spoke from God.
• Hebrews 6:17-19 (NASB) 17 In the same way God,
desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise
the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with
an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in
which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have
taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take
hold of the hope set before us. 19 This hope we have as
an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast
and one which enters within the veil,
7. Therefore
• All that the bible says in it’s original
manuscripts must be true
• God created things in the order described of
Gen 1-2 in 6 days
• The heavens and the earth, Light, Separation of
light from darkness, Day and night and the time of
a day, An expanse, Separation of the waters, Dry
land/earth, Vegetation, Star & Galaxies and Sun
and Moon, water creatures and birds, Land
creatures, Humans
• Adam was the first person
• Humans lived along side dinosaurs
• There was a GLOBAL flood with only 8 human
survivors and all of the Kinds of animals
• The different languages were created at the
tower of Babel and from there all humans
were dispersed around the world
8.
9. Gen 6 – Preparation for the Flood
Genesis 6:1-7 (NASB)
1 Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters
were born to them,
2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives
for themselves, whomever they chose.
3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh;
nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years."
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God
came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty
men who were of old, men of renown.
5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every
intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His
heart.
7 The LORD said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from
man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made
them."
10. Gen 6 – Preparation for the Flood
Genesis 6:8-15 (NASB)
8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless
in his time; Noah walked with God.
10 Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their
way upon the earth.
13 Then God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled
with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.
14 "Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall
cover it inside and out with pitch.
15 "This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth
fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
11. Gen 6 – Preparation for the Flood
Genesis 6:16-22 (NASB)
16 "You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the
door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.
17 "Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in
which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.
18 "But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your
sons and your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
19 "And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to
keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.
20 "Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing
of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.
21 "As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself;
and it shall be for food for you and for them."
22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.
12. Gen 6 Observations
• God told Noah man’s days would be 120 years
• Nephilim were on the earth, they were mighty men
• The “wickedness of man was great on the earth”, and “every intent of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually”, the earth was corrupt and filled
with violence
• The Lord was grieved and because of the evil, He planned to destroy the earth
and ALL flesh except that which was put on the Ark
• God gave Noah instructions on how to build the Ark
• God directed Noah to bring two of every KIND onto the Ark along with food
• Noah was not told to bring water aboard the Ark
• The animals came to Noah, he did not have to round them up
• Noah did as God commanded
13. Gen 6 Interpretation
• The 120 years could be either the new life expectancy, or the time from
when God first told Noah until the flood
• The Nephilim MAY have been the children of fallen angels and women
• The Lord’s grief was NOT in the sense the he made a mistake. He knew the
end from the beginning. Man’s evil was no surprise to God
• The Ark was NOT only build of wood as some argue. It is clear from Gen 4
that bronze and iron metal working skills were highly developed
• KINDS has nothing to do with how scientist delineate species today. KINDS
were any groups that could mate with each other, probably more similar to
“families” as defined today
14.
15.
16. Gen 7 – The Flood
Genesis 7:1-24 (NASB)
1 Then the LORD said to Noah, "Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I
have seen to be righteous before Me in this time.
2 "You shall take with you of every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of
the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female;
3 also of the birds of the sky, by sevens, male and female, to keep offspring alive on the
face of all the earth.
4 "For after seven more days, I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights; and I
will blot out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made."
5 Noah did according to all that the LORD had commanded him.
6 Now Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth.
7 Then Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him entered the ark
because of the water of the flood.
8 Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that creeps on
the ground,
17. Gen 7 – The Flood
Genesis 7:1-24 (NASB)
9 there went into the ark to Noah by twos, male and female, as God had commanded
Noah.
10 It came about after the seven days, that the water of the flood came upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of
the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the
floodgates of the sky were opened.
12 The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.
13 On the very same day Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and
Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark,
14 they and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping
thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, all sorts of birds.
15 So they went into the ark to Noah, by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life.
16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him;
and the LORD closed it behind him.
18. Gen 7 – The Flood
Genesis 7:1-24 (NASB)
17 Then the flood came upon the earth for forty days, and the water increased and lifted
up the ark, so that it rose above the earth.
18 The water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark floated on the
surface of the water.
19 The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains
everywhere under the heavens were covered.
20 The water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered.
21 All flesh that moved on the earth perished, birds and cattle and beasts and every
swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind;
22 of all that was on the dry land, all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life,
died.
23 Thus He blotted out every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from man to
animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky, and they were blotted out from the
earth; and only Noah was left, together with those that were with him in the ark.
24 The water prevailed upon the earth one hundred and fifty days.
19. Gen 7 Observations
• God said Noah alone was righteous
• 2 of every KIND of unclean animal was taken and 7 of every clean
• The animals included land animals, beasts, creeping things, and birds
• God’s intent was to “blot out every living thing from the face of the land”
that He has made
• 8 people entered the Ark
• The water came from “all the fountains of the great deep” which “burst
open”, and from “the floodgates of the sky”
• God closed the door
• All flesh that moved on the land perished
20. Gen 7 Interpretation
• In Gen 1, God reserved vast amounts of water for the future flood
• The force of the waters was extreme and would coincided with major
tectonic plate movement and upheaval of the earth
• Dinosaurs would have been taken on the Ark among the KINDS
• A global flood would cause many ocean creatures to be killed along
with the land animals
• Land animals and vegetations would be expected to be buried with
ocean creatures
• A global flood would best explain for the fossil record that we observe
• The mountains could not have been as tall then as they are now
22. Gen 8 – The End of the Flood
Genesis 8:1-22 (NASB)
1 But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in
the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided.
2 Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain
from the sky was restrained;
3 and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of one hundred and fifty
days the water decreased.
4 In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark rested upon the
mountains of Ararat.
5 The water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first
day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible.
6 Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark
which he had made;
7 and he sent out a raven, and it flew here and there until the water was dried up from
the earth.
23. Gen 8 – The End of the Flood
Genesis 8:1-22 (NASB)
8 Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the
land;
9 but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him
into the ark, for the water was on the surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand
and took her, and brought her into the ark to himself.
10 So he waited yet another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark.
11 The dove came to him toward evening, and behold, in her beak was a freshly picked
olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth.
12 Then he waited yet another seven days, and sent out the dove; but she did not return
to him again.
13 Now it came about in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of
the month, the water was dried up from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of
the ark, and looked, and behold, the surface of the ground was dried up.
14 In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.
24. Gen 8 – The End of the Flood
Genesis 8:1-22 (NASB)
15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying,
16 "Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons' wives with you.
17 "Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals
and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly on
the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth."
18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him.
19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth,
went out by their families from the ark.
20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every
clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21 The LORD smelled the soothing aroma; and the LORD said to Himself, "I will never
again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man's heart is evil from his
youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
22 "While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and
winter, And day and night Shall not cease."
25. Gen 8 Observations
• God closed the fountains and floodgates
• The water receded steadily
• The Ark rested upon “the mountains of Ararat” on the 7th month
• The tops of the mountains became visible in the 10th month
• Vegetation was re-growing by the 12th month
• The land Noah could see was dried up by the 12th month
• The earth was dry by the ~14th month
• Noah build an alter and sacrificed the clean animals (except 1 pair each) to
the Lord
• The earth was repopulated by 8 people and 2 of every KIND of animal
26. Gen 8 Interpretation
• Civilization was very advanced based on Gen 4
• Noah likely used special knowledge from God along with learned
knowledge from the highly advanced civilization that existed pre-
flood
• Human DNA was severely narrowed by the flood
• Animal DNA was severely narrowed by the flood
• Human longevity diminished rapidly in the generations after the
flood, possibly due to combination of DNA pool, elimination of the
waters “above”, and possibly due to many other factors like magnetic
field decay
27. Gen 8 Interpretation – Global Flood
• The flood was NOT local
• Many professed Christians believe this because they have been duped by
the lies of Atheists/Evolutionists
• If a local flood:
• How were all the mountains covered with water?
• Why even build an Ark? The animals, and even Noah and his family could have just
moved out of the area.
• Also how could every land-dwelling thing be destroyed?
• Why would God say He’d never send another flood like it - there have been
thousands of local floods since then.
• The idea of a local flood ignores the biblical teaching about the global
nature of this event.
28. Gen 8 Interpretation – Enough Water?
• Skeptics claim there is no way there is enough water to cover the whole earth for
a global Flood.
• Problem: There is not enough observable snow/ice and moisture in the air to
cover all the earth’s mountains
• Options:
1. The mountains arose after the high point of the flood
2. Huge volumes of water are currently hidden under the earth’s crust
3. The continents have risen and oceans deepened since the flood
• Evidence:
• Most mountains around the world have ocean fossils - Mt. Everest, the Himalayan range, the
Alps, the Rockies, the Appalachians, the Andes, and most of the world's other mountains are
composed of ocean-bottom sediments, full of marine fossils laid down by the Flood. Mt.
Everest itself has clam fossils at its summit
• If the earth's surface were completely flat, existing, observable water would cover the earth
to a depth of about 8,000 feet.
29.
30. Gen 8 Interpretation – Enough Room?
• Skeptics claim there is no way there is enough space for all the animals on the Ark
• Civilization was very advanced based on Gen 4
• Noah could have taken water or has a system of holds for water that could have
been filled by rains
• Babylonian cubit =~20 inches, 300 cubits=500 ft long, 50 cubits=83 ft wide, 30
cubits=50 ft high for a total of 1.61 million cubic feet assuming a “ship” shape
• The bible clearly distinguishes that we only have to be concerned about KINDS,
which are those that can mate with each other
• All members of the horse family are 1 kind, same for dogs, cats, many cattle, deer family, etc.
• Juvenile animals would likely have been taken for many species to save space
• KINDS were those animals that could breed together
31. Kinds
• Modern biologists break up living things
into “Genera”, “Families”, and “Species”
• Gen 6 makes it clear that a KIND required
the ability to interbreed, but one KIND
would not be capable of breeding with
another
• Species doe not represent KINDS since
many species can interbreed
• Genera are still too broad because many
Genera can breed with other Genera
• Families are most likely since they are not
known to Interbreed

• Juvenile animals would likely have been taken for many species to save space
• KINDS were those animals that could breed together
• 1,800,000 / 1,000 = 1800 cubic feet per pair – an area 9 ft wide x 20 ft long x 10 ft
high. Perhaps as much as half the Families could survive in 8 cubic feet
• This is more than enough space for the animals, humans, food, and water
34. Gen 9 - God’s New Instructions
Genesis 9:1-7 (NASB)
1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, "Be
fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
2 "The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every beast
of the earth and on every bird of the sky; with everything that
creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, into your
hand they are given.
3 "Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give
all to you, as I gave the green plant.
4 "Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
5 "Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast I will
require it. And from every man, from every man's brother I
will require the life of man.
6 "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be
shed, For in the image of God He made man.
7 "As for you, be fruitful and multiply; Populate the earth
abundantly and multiply in it."
35. Gen 9 - Observations
• God commanded Noah’s descendants to "Be fruitful
and multiply, and fill the earth.”
• God caused the animals to fear man - a new dynamic
• God gave man animals for food in addition to fruits
and vegetables – a new, good reason for animals to
fear man
• God instituted a death penalty
36. Gen 9 - Interpretation
• Prior to the flood, man and animals had no fear and no
hostility toward one another
• Animals were also changed to no longer be plant
eaters
• Animals would not only fear man, but would also fear
other animals
• The death penalty would be a new deterrent to reduce
evil
• The post flood era was a new epoch
37. Gen 11:1-9 – Tower of Babel
Genesis 11:1-9 (NASB)
1 Now the whole earth used the same language and the
same words.
2 It came about as they journeyed east, that they found
a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
3 They said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks
and burn them thoroughly." And they used brick for
stone, and they used tar for mortar.
4 They said, "Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and
a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us
make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be
scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth."
5 The LORD came down to see the city and the tower
which the sons of men had built.
38. Gen 11:1-9 – Tower of Babel
Genesis 11:1-9 (NASB)
6 The LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they
all have the same language. And this is what they began to
do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be
impossible for them.
7 "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their
language, so that they will not understand one another's
speech."
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the
face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the
city.
9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the
LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from
there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of
the whole earth.
39. Gen 11:1-9 – Observations
• All people had 1 language up until Babel
• The people intentionally did not obey the Lord and
did not want to be scattered
• God interceded, confused the languages and
scattered the people “over the face of the whole
earth”
40. Gen 11:1-9 – Interpretation
• All humans are but 1 KIND, there are no “races”
• We are a diverse kind, much like breeds of cats,
dogs, horses, etc.
• God’s intervention gave a special new knowledge of
new languages to each group of peoples
• It is clear from some ancient languages, such as
Chinese, that there was a common belief in
creation, the global flood, and the tower of Bable
41.
42. Conclusions
• The flood was a real, catastrophic, global event that wiped out life for all land
animals, creeping things, birds, and humans except for those spared on the Ark
• The Ark was big enough to support all the animals, food and water
• The Ark was build with instructions from God and taking advantage of advanced
human knowledge of the day
• The earth is very different today than it was before the flood
• The relationship between humans and animals is very different post flood
• All humans are 1 race, descended from Adam, through 1 man - Noah
• Diversity of peoples and languages came after the flood
• God forced the dispersion of peoples at the tower of Babel
• The fossil record screams of a global, catastrophic flood
43. Application
• In order to be equipped as apologists
1. We need to be able to anticipate and answer the opposition’s questions
about history
2. We should not feel like we are always on the defensive, but we should lob
some origin bombs and fossil record grenades back at them
3. We must admit when we simply don’t know, but be ready to offer
hypotheses when and were appropriate
4. We need to trust our God and know that the “truth is out there”
5. We should never respond with anger or frustration, but in a calm demeanor
6. We should recognize when a person is unwilling to consider the real science
and only want to justify their anti-God position

Last week I raised a number of questions for you to consider….
To be good apologists, we need to be able to answer tough questions, for example
How can we see light from stars that are billions of light years away?
Was it really possible for people to live nearly 1000 years?
Why did God create many creatures that He then allowed to go extinct?
How could all the animals fit on the ark?
Was there really a global flood?
How could Noah have build the Ark with limited technology?
Where did all the water come from for the flood?
There is not enough water on the earth to cover the earth higher than Mount Everest – how do we explain that?
How could a man survive 3 days in a sea creature?
How did we get all the races of people that we have?
We will answer some of these questions today
In the following weeks, we will also provide many questions you to ask the opposition
We also discussed Uniformitarianism and Catastrophism
Uniformitarianism - The assumption that the same natural laws and processes that operate in the universe now have always operated in the universe in the past and apply everywhere in the universe.
Catastrophism - The theory that the Earth has been affected in the past by sudden, short-lived, violent events, possibly worldwide in scope.
We reviewed Genesis 1-3 and looked at the order of creation events
We discussed a 6 day work week for God.
Questions for those who claim faith, but not sure about evolution vs 6 literal 24 hours days
Is God omnipotent?
Gen 1-2 We already saw how God spoke everything into existence. Was God limited.
Job 42:2 (NASB) 2 "I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.
Psalm 33:6 (NASB) 6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host.
Why would God have us wait billions of years to execute his plan?
Why wait billions of years before creating Adam and then have the history of humans last only 6000 years?
Since man was made in the image of God, why wait?
9:04
Last week, we also showed the discrepancy in the order of created things between Evolutionary Theory and Creation
From the left side of this chart only…
Could birds have come from dinosaurs?
How fast would the number of animals, fish, and insects grow in population if there is no predation?
9:05
Here is our plan for today
I want to start with inerrancy, then we will work through the history of the flood
Story vs history….
9:07
I wanted to start with inerrancy because this is critical to believers
Either we believe the ENTIRE bible or we end up on a slippery slope of picking and choosing what we want to believe and in the process, we completely discredit ourselves and the word of God
Certainly we could agree that there have been some minor copy errors over time, we have seen that in comparison of the multitude of manuscripts available to us
However, those manuscripts do not show any substantive differences in biblical principals
We must believe in a single, original human – Adam
Jesus believed in Adam – Mt 19:4-6
Moses – as the human writer of Genesis
Job – Job 31:33
Hosea – Hos 6:7
Author of Hebrews
Paul – Ro 5:14, 1 Chor 15:22, 45, 1 Ti 2:13-14
Jude – Ju 1:14
We have similar cross references throughout the bible to the flood and Noah
Is 54:9, Ez 14:14,20, Mt 24:37-38, Lk 3:36, 17:26-27, Heb 11:7, 1 Pe 3:20, 2 Pe 2:5
9:11
This is an artists rendering of what it may have looked like during the construction of the Ark
9:11
9:12
9:13
9:14
Was the 120 years referring to the eventual lifespan of people or the time until the flood?
9:16
Argument against life expectancy is that it took about 10 more generations for this to happen
Argument against time remaining, is that in Ch 7 we learn that Noah was 500 years old when he had his sons and 600 at the flood – only 100 years, but verse 10 said he was the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth
Certainly Satan and demons have worked against God in influencing man from the beginning
Interesting to put the context of a global flood with the idea from Mt 12:43 implying demons do not like water
A better word for sorry is grieved – God does not make mistakes
Genesis 4:22 (NASB) 22 As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron;

The idea that the Flood of Noah’s day was just a local flood has been gaining popularity with many Christians. Where does this idea come from?
Definitely not from the Bible! It is a forced interpretation—an attempt to fit millions of years into the Bible.
But a local flood has many problems. How were all the mountains covered with water? Why even build an Ark? The animals, and even Noah and his family could have just moved out of the area.
Also how could every land-dwelling thing be destroyed? And God said He’d never send another flood like it, but there have been hundreds of local floods since then.
The idea of a local flood ignores the biblical teaching about the global nature of this event.

Many skeptics claim there is no way there is enough water to cover the whole earth for a global Flood. But the world before the Flood didn’t have the same mountains. Our mountains are full of fossils, which means, they were formed during the Flood.
And the Bible says the “fountains of the great deep burst forth” . . . releasing water from inside the earth. There is actually evidence that there is more water under the earth than in our oceans!
Now, secular geologists once believed there was a global flood on Mars. But there is no liquid water on Mars! Yet they reject the idea of a global Flood on our planet covered with 70% water.
The problem isn’t the evidence; it’s a rejection of God’s Word.

This chart helps to put into context Jacob’s comment to Pharaoh when asked how old he was.
Genesis 47:7-9 (NASB)
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob and presented him to Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 8 Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many years have you lived?“ 9 So Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty; few and unpleasant have been the years of my life, nor have they attained the years that my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning."
