Estimated annual leptospirosis morbidity and
mortality according to GBD region a systematic
review study conducted in 2015 1
ESTIMATED ANNUAL MORBIDITY OF LEPTOSPIROSIS BY COUNTRY OR TERRITORY. ANNUAL
DISEASE INCIDENCE IS REPRESENTED AS AN EXPONENTIAL COLOUR GRADIENT
FROM WHITE (0–3), YELLOW (7–10), ORANGE (20–25) TO RED (OVER 100), IN CASES PER
100,000 POPULATION. CIRCLES AND TRIANGLES INDICATE THE COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN FOR

IRELAND UNDER RODENT ATTACK
ACCORDING TO THE DUBLIN CITY
COUNCIL IN 2018,"THE LONG SPELL OF
VERY WARM WEATHER APPARENTLY
HAS INCREASED THEIR BREEDING.
BUILDING WORKS HAVE DISTURBED
NESTS AND THE INCREASE OF FAST
FOOD OUTLETS AND DISCARDED
FOOD WASTE, TOGETHER WITH THE
FACT THAT MANY OF OUR COMPLEXES
ARE LOCATED NEAR TO
CANALS/RIVERS, THE NATURAL
HABITAT OF RODENTS, ARE ALSO
CONTRIBUTORY FACTORS TO THE
RODENT INCREASE." [4]

2019 ISSUED A WARNING TO THE
PUBLIC OF A SPECIE OF RODENT

POTENTIAL TO TRANSMIT A
NUMBER OF DISEASE IMPORTANT
TO HUMANS AND ANIMALS.

CONCLUSIONS
• MORBIDITY NOT CLEAR BECAUSE MAY BE UNDERDIAGNOSED BECAUSE IT MAY BE
CONFUSED WITH OTHER DISEASE.
• THE HIGH COST AND REDUCE INCOME RESULTING FROM LEPTOSPIROSIS IS ONE OF
THE REASONS TO PREVENT AND CONTROL AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.
• THE NUMBER OF LEPTOSPIROSIS CASES IS HIGHER IN TROPICAL-CLIMATE
COUNTRIES THAN IN TEMPERATE CLIMATE COUNTRIES

CONCLUSIONS • MORBIDITY NOT CLEAR BECAUSE MAY BE UNDERDIAGNOSED BECAUSE IT MAY BE CONFUSED WITH OTHER DISEASE. • THE HIGH COST AND REDUCE INCOME RESULTING FROM LEPTOSPIROSIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS TO PREVENT AND CONTROL AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. • THE NUMBER OF LEPTOSPIROSIS CASES IS HIGHER IN TROPICAL-CLIMATE COUNTRIES THAN IN TEMPERATE CLIMATE COUNTRIES

Editor's Notes

  1. How long is the incubation period? The incubation period is usually 5–14 days, with a range of 2–30 days.
  2. Human transmission through cuts and abrasions in the skin, through intact mucous membranes (nose, mouth, eyes) and perhaps through waterlogged skin. They may occasionally enter the human body via the inhalation of droplets of urine or via drinking-water
  3. microscopic agglutination test (MAT)? The MAT is a test which determines agglutinating antibodies in the serum of a patient by mixing it in various dilutions with live or killed, formalized leptospires IgM and IgG(1)
  4. The number of human cases worldwide is not known precisely. According to currently available reports, incidences range from approximately 0.1–1 per 100 000 per year in temperate climates to 10–100 per 100 000 in the humid tropics. During outbreaks and in high-exposure risk groups, disease incidence may reach over 100 per 100000
  5. Case-fatality rates in different parts of the world have been reported to range from <5% to 30%.
  6. Other prevention measures include: the reduction of certain animal reservoir populations, e.g. rats – the separation of animal reservoirs from human habitations by means of fences and screens; – the immunization of dogs and livestock; – the removal of rubbish and keeping areas around human habitations clean; – encouraging people not to leave food around, especially in recreational areas where rats may be present.(1)
